Krebs20 Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 I just ordered 2 30g ssd for my pc. I currently have 2 rapter drives in raid 0. That is the only storage on my pc. I have been thinking on how to best use my new drives. My options are as follows. 1 Put both SSDs together in raid 0 for the OS and use the old drives for game installs. 2 Install the OS on one drive. and use the other for games. only 30gig per drive. Use the old drives for other games/storage 3 Just put them in the pc and load them as a new drive. Reinstall everything on the SSD and use the rapter drives for the OS. I'm most likely to go will option 1. But if you had 2 30gig to use on your pc. How would you use them? I am using Windows Vista. I plan to upgrade soon. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
bumfire Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 Raid both SSD's. I have 2 128gig SSD's, I have them setup as raid 0, and I use a few 1 - 1.5TB harddrives for storage. I will say that 60gig total is kinda small, especially if you have alot of games to install. If you ask me, I would raid them both and use them as your OS drive, if you are using XP then you MUST makesure that your drives are aligned correctly before installing windows, if you use vista or windows 7 then your SSD's will get auto aligned whilst you create a new partition to install windows on. Raid and install lockon/dcs to the ssd's, as its much quicker at loading and for loading different areas of the map once you start flying. You could then use your raptors either singly or as raid 0 for the rest of your games or whatever. If you are new to SSD's, there is alot of reading up to do to get the best performance out of them and what not to do, i.e never defragment your ssd's.
Krebs20 Posted August 19, 2010 Author Posted August 19, 2010 I'm really trying to avoid an install on the same hard disk as the OS. I have a lot of issues with the virtual store in Windows Vista. I could partition the ssd. But as you said its only 60gig. Anyone know how to install with having to virtual store mess everything up in Vista? Mods don't like it. I never liked having every game I own installed. I've gotten by with 130gigs for years. Looks like ill be using the ssd for OS in raid. Then the rapter array for dcs and other games. topdog Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 Avoiding VirtualStore issues is done by simply installing to a location that you as a regular (non-admin) user have full control of. This can be an area outside of the Program Files directory, or if you want to use that one, then its best you create the folder for the game yourself in advance of performing the install to that location, and grant yourself full control and owner permissions. Setting Full Control for a specific user, and changing the Owner, is done under 2 different dialogs of the Security subpages of a folder's properties, you really need to do both for a hassle-free life whilst still retaining your usual OS security preferences. Krebs20 Posted August 20, 2010 Author Posted August 20, 2010 Thank you topdog. I had the 1st part done. Never changed the owner. I'll try that tonight. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Prophet4no1 Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Setting up a raid 10 with single SSD in my new build. I'm using a single 120gb OCZ Vertex 2 for the OS and 4 1TB WB blacks in raid 10. Raid 10 is pretty much two raid 0 setups in raid 1. So, you get the speed of raid 0 mut redundancy of raid 1. As long as two matching drives dont go down at the same time, you are fine. KungFuCharlie Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I've put two hard drives into every computer I've built since back in the Windows XP days. I install the OS and programs on one drive and use the other for all of my files. The great thing about this set up is that when Windows starts getting really slow (4-6 months), I can easily format the OS drive and reinstall it and my applications. I keep all the installers that I need or links to the download page for the latest version on the documents hard drive so I don't have to search for them or try to remember what all I need to install. For data redundancy I sync my documents drive with a network attached storage drive (Western Digital MyBook World - 1TB) every week or two in case that hard drive dies on me. RAID is nice and is useful but I've just never used it. I like keeping my documents drive separate from my OS / Apps drive and never feel like buying 4 hard drives to get the benefits of RAID redundancy. If you're worried about data safety, get a DROBO. They are ultra-sweet.
