driver7408 Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 Normally I'm an FSX fan, but I love this sim. I got into it a several months ago, but had to take a break, due to work (real life helo pilot.) My current system is a dual core E8500 running moderately overclocked with 4 gigs ram and an 8800 ultra. I'm running dual monitors (42' plasma and a 19' LCD.) I just came across the touchbuddy mod, and I just ordered a touchscreen overlay for my 19' monitor. I want to do a clean OS/DCS reinstall and incorporate the touchbuddy panels onto my 19' monitor so I can use it efficiently. (I think having all those panels right there at my fingertips would make the sim way more enjoyable.) I have a choice of operating systems: Vista 32, Vista 64, and XP 64. I would like to know which of these OS's would be the best for this particular application (dual monitor/touchbuddy) And also, should I install the DCS program files onto their own separate hard drive, and would there be any benefit to doing that, as I know there is for FSX.

If your only going to run 4 Gb of ram then there would be little point in going to a 64 bit os, but each to his own. As far as XP VS Vista I quick search tells me what I already know and that is that Vista and Win 7 will get you better performance. it has something to do with their ability to use Processor Core Affinity. You can search on it and find far more useful info. I run DCS Black Shark on it's own Hard drive with no problems, but since I have done no proper testing I can only give anecdotal opinion. Of course I like to think it works better I am fairly certain that it doesn't hurt and I had the extra drive there already. As far as multi-monitor setups There are many extensive threads here on that subject, it seems all agree that is the only point where a better graphics card seems to be very important. As you know this is a CPU bound sim, very much like fsx and it can't take advantage of more then two cores so a duo core @ 3.6 Ghz would very likely give you the same frame rate as a quad @ 3.6 Ghz.
