hassata Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Nice little utility to put everything on one core, then a sim across the rest. You can monitor effects in realtime, as can change core assignment while running programs. http://www.koma-code.de/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=88&Itemid=93 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
3Sqn_TomAce Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Any FPS increase when running it on it's own core?
BlackSharkAce Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 I personnally use this one called "Prio". It does the same and is very discrete and low performance impact. Gain in performance is marginal but chaning priorities definately gives a hand, be sure to know what you tweak btw.. you dont wanna mess up the vital functions of windows. http://www.prnwatch.com/prio.html
hassata Posted September 15, 2010 Author Posted September 15, 2010 I gained 3-5 fps, and 'smoothness,' especially in FSX. I set it to run FSX (or FC) on both cores 1 and 2, and everything else on core 1. With FSX, you can actually watch the fps change in windowed mode as you mess around with core usage, and also monitor cpu performance in the task manager. Here are some instructions from free fall over on the REX forum: Open up CPU Control. If you click on options at the lower right, it opens to a box that allows you to tick off Quad core. Then you can go back and make a profile. Right click on what ever process you want to change on the left "processes side" (I'm using XP so I'm not sure what you do with Vista or Windows 7...right click also?). Go down to "add to selected cpu profile". Other boxes open up. If you want the process assigned to 1 CPU and only 1 CPU, then choose 1 CPU and then another box opens where you can choose which CPU you want to assign it to. If you want it to run on 2 CPU's then choose 2 CPU's and then another box will open that will allow you to choose which 2 CPU's you want to assign. The same for 3 CPU's, and the same for 4 CPU's. All your choices will automatically be entered on the profile. You don't have to choose "add to selected CPU profile" if you don't want it to run that way all the time. Each time you could right click on a process and then choose whatever you want, but by making a profile you will not have to go through all the processes listed over and over. After you have made a profile, don't close CPU Control, just click on minimize and it will minimize to your tray. Then right click on it so choices open up, and select "Mode" and then "Manual". Now whatever you entered on your profile will be working. If you choose "Automatic", then CPU Control will run things as they were listed on the left side of CPU Control (which on my machine was every process utilizing both CPU's.)(Now I have a profile running where all processes are on 1 CPU, and only FSX is assigned to 1+2 CPU) You can experiment while flying in FSX. Just put FSX in a smaller window, right click on the CPU control icon in your system tray, and choose show. CPU control opens up and you can switch CPU's at will, watching the frame rate as FSX flies. When satisfied, make sure to minimize CPU control and not turn it off, so that it goes back to the system tray. Then check to make sure "Manual" is still selected. « Last Edit: Today at 04:55:07 PM by freefall » [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
