When I am using the cannon or Vikhr I turn the laser on that’s on the targeting panel and seem to hit the targets ok.

But on the left front panel it has a laser designator. I believe but am just checking that the laser on the targeting panel is for cannons and Vikhrs only and the laser designator on the front left panel is for KH-25ML, KH-19L and laser guided bombs only? And if that is the case you can’t use one of these to back up the other?

Thanx

AFAIK is the same laser, by moving the switch the laser will fire longer for the Kh-25/kh-19. By moving the front switch you have a higher chance o burn the lase up.

Let me look in the book to verify since it has been a long time since I browse through it

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

Because it is not always sending laser energy and maybe your allowing it enough time to cool, good on you, great laser discipline. Looking at the manual and without going trough the many threads formerly created about the laser and how to use it, I still think it is only one laser, just different automatic cooling times.

It's just one laser with three modes: grid projection, rangefinding, and coded illumination. The grid projection is a low-power application used to give the Vikhr tail-sensor guidance. The rangefinder is a high-power brief pulse to measure ranges. The illumination-for-designation is a high-power lasing for your Kh-25s and similar nose-sensor weapons. It's nearly impossible to overheat the laser with just the low-power Vikhr guidance.

The laser switch has OFF and STANDBY positions. Off is off and standby means the laser will operate when prompted by the computers. Just being in standby doesn't overheat the laser, it's constant use that does it.
