Quid21 Posted October 15, 2010 Posted October 15, 2010 So there I was feeling all proud at completing my first unaided engine start taxi and take-off but then things went awry. I'm doing something wrong clearly, but after numerous attempts and re-reading the abbreviated checklist someone made I can't figure out the following: 1. My Standby Attitude indicator wanders after a few minutes 2. My HUD horizon marks start to wander in the roll axis 3. What does HARS actually do and does it need to be on after start up (I find no reference to it in the mini checklist I saw. 4. If I don't press the HARS button how do i get the horizon marks on the HUD along with the impact point symbol (can't remember the technical term? Sorry for these newbie questions, but it's a helluva lot to take in. We're blessed though that we have something worthy of being called a sim now after all those competitors dumbed down attempts over the years. Suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong very welcome! David.

Tango Posted October 15, 2010 Posted October 15, 2010 Hi, You need to wait for INS alignment before moving the aircraft. The standby attitude indicator seems a bit temperamental. I've not seen it wander on the ground so far, but it certainly does after tight maneuvering of the aircraft. This is normal, and you need to level the aircraft before pulling the cage knob to re-align it in flight. Regarding the rolling HUD - I think this is INS related. You need to wait until it tells you NAV READY before moving. HARS is the older inertial attitude and heading reference system, and it can drive the analogue HSI and big ADI ball in the center of the forward panel. It used to be the primary system on the A-10A, but now it is a backup on the A-10C. It is recommended to switch the system to EGI mode (Enhanced GPS/INS), so the INS system is providing the attitude and heading information to the instruments. Read the manual on the systems - they are very detailed indeed, and you will need to know it. Best regards, Tango.

So what you're basically saying is that the HUD gets its pitch, roll and heading info from the INS. What I was doing was turning on HARS before taxi because it gave me the horizontal ladders on the HUD minus that moving impact point symbol showing you where you'd hit the ground. I must check out the manual. Think I'll have to get a printed version as soon as it is available to buy (if it is going to be?).
Quid21 Posted October 15, 2010 Author Posted October 15, 2010 Okay, so I got the NAV ready indicator as per manual. What I can't for the life of me find right now is either a switch or key command that is the Master Mode Control Button apparently on the stick, which is used to cycle through the HUD modes.......? Couldn't even find reference to it in the key command list in the sim?

Quid21 Posted October 15, 2010 Author Posted October 15, 2010 (edited) Didn't think to check in there, thought that since it was to do with the HUD it would be in the systems section! So much to learn! Thanks again. EDIT: Just went into the options, seems I didn't also realise theres key commands for sim mode and different key commands for game mode - looks like in game mode the HOTAS MMC button is not assigned to anything since M is already assigned. Come to think of it, I shouldn't be using the game mode anyway lol Edited October 15, 2010 by Quid21

There are several PDF's with commands and joystick references that are not in the beta. It's a steep learning curve but nonetheless very much rewarding when you drop your first JDAM or firing that first Maverick on full realism. Take one section at a time starting with NAV. Quid21 Posted October 16, 2010 Author Posted October 16, 2010 Thanks Ragtag, trouble I have is the fact that I have no printer, I have been reading sections of the manual and have then written down as much as I can but no matter how much I write down something just goes once I get into the sim!! I was reading the HUD section yesterday and unless there's another HUD section it makes no reference to where it gets attitude etc data from, which in my opinion would be something that is required of a manual. The average Joe down the road who has never flown a plane, or perhaps used a decent PC sim before doesn't know that the HUD takes it's data feed from the INS system, but he would look at the HUD section in the manual in an attempt to find out. Its a shame we can't get one of the MFDs to have a button for displaying helpful procedures, such as start up, releasing weapons, NAV and also the reference speeds for takeoff, landing cruise etc like the knee board in FSX gives the capability. Thanks for your help it is a very big learning curve even for a plane buff like me!
