Too bad dcs can only use 2 of the 1000 cores. A chip like that will need to wait a long time for proper software to catch up.

Article says user programmable. Does that mean on the fly? If so, I would imaging a program like DCS being able to configure the cores to best suit its needs. Still the DCS engine would need to be written to take advantage. Other software like 3d modeling would be able to program the cores and cut rendering times down.

I always love scientists.

"...but their processing power is huge while their energy consumption is very small because they are so much quicker - so they are also a greener option."

Really? Yeah, it works quicker so that would obviously mean its greener and uses less energy. Scientists are so smart yet so naive.

Working quicker does not automatically mean "greener". Is a Ferrari "greener" than a Smart because it can get you to the destination quicker? Nope... ;)

I'd like a lot more detail on what they did than what the article gives before I pass my verdict on this though. The terms used are too vague and journalists (disclaimer: I am educated into journalism though I don't work as one now) are absolute crap at relaying science stuff correctly.

However a Ferrari does much more for humanity via the technology used to develop it and its use as a helpful aide in procreation. :music_whistling: Granted a Smart car has some influence on the former, but not so much on the latter. :megalol:

I'm not getting my hopes up that we'll have access to a useful exploitation of this tech during the next two iterations of DCS products, but it just bodes well. Maybe in the next 3-5 years, CPUs will get a significant boost such that sims in general and the DCS series n particular won't be ahead of concurrent CPU performance. Having said that I have a feeling the more processing power is available, the more calculations programmers will find for it to run. So DCS F-18 with full carrier ops, with realt-time, world-wide conflict running in the background, along with a simulated world-economy that reacts accordingly, not to mention the ability to micro-manage defense budgets and take over-all control of political strategy, will still bring 2016 hardware to a crawl :).

a helpful aide in procreation.

:D

Though, surprisingly, it didn't do much for my nocturnal adventures.
