Okay guys, so other than the weird quirk regarding the PC refusing to reboot without first entirely switching itself off, things are going well..

As I said in my other post, I saw a big increase in FPS going from a gtx 260 to a gtx 460...The improvement was so substantial that it was worth the cost of the upgrade purely on the basis of this sim.

I have now installed the I5 760 (from a q6600 @2.6) and 4gb ddr 3 @ 1200 (from 4b ddr2 800mhz)

So, the results...Obviously, this new system is a huge improvement in fps on my old one, but they have boosted the experience in different (and predictable) ways..

With the GPU upgrade, I saw a much higher fps with regards to lighting, and rendering of multiple A-10s and runways..However, as soon as units started fighting in the background (whether or not I could still see explosions) my PC still slowed down substantially..Now, with the new memory and CPU upgrade, new units (whilst obviously still having an effect) do not slow my pc down close to as much..

So, in summary (and given my limited, non technical experience..)

If you're running fine on the ground, external views with heat blur and AA etc on all run smoothly, but busy missions slow you down, you'd probably benefit a lot from a CPU/ram upgrade..

If multiple units spawning and fighting does little to your fps, but running the TGI (I think thats its name..) and looking into the sun with hdr, multiple aircraft at close range etc does cause slow down, I expect you'd benefit most from a GPU upgrade.

Obviously, upgrading it all will give the biggest boost...As it did with me, but if either of these areas are particularly lacking, then in my experience, this is the best way to deal with it!

Hope this helps those of you planning an upgrade!

Out of the stock missions, which one would be good to use as a performance test? I've been looking for one with a lot going on in the backgraound but have yet to find one that will tax my CPU.

I friggin hate that my Q6600 is old news now lol...I definitely need a graphics card update too! Running a 9800 GTX+...it does OK, but definitely doesn't do 'High' settings well.

Soupy apparently if you OC the q6600 it makes a huge difference, half the reason I upgraded was because my mobo wouldnt go past 2.6!
