This has probably been answered before, but I couldn't find any posts about it.

I'm making a mission where I have 1 C-130 and 1 C-17 set to fly to a waypoint and orbit there until a flag is set. When the flag is on, they are supposed to fly to an airfield and land there. Somehow they refuse to do this. When the flag is set, I just hear them say "RTB" over the radio and then fly to a random (even enemy) airport and land there (or get shot down by SAMs trying...). Is there a way I can actually get them to land at the assigned airfield?

In that mission I also have a flight of 3 Su-25s that I've set to attack some targets. My problem is that when they are approaching their targets, one of the Su-25s turns away and flies away for about 10nm., and then turns back to attack. The other two Su-25s are doing what they're supposed to. What's causing the last one to do this?

Make sure you have a waypoint after the orbit, near the airfield you want them to land at. Also, it's not likely this is a problem, but you could set the "RTB at bingo" option false. I know that C-130s and C-17s should have a LONG time before bingo, though. Finally, if they keep wanting to land at a certain airport you don't want them to, make sure you put some enemy ground units at that airport. Keep playing at it, if you come up with a successfuly solution, let us know. Personally, I've given up on getting AI to do any airport operations successfully. Lets hope we get at least SOME relief next patch.

As far as your second question goes... I donno. AI stupidity? Maybe you could try triggered actions to get them to attack what you want? Note that an apparent bug afflicting triggered actions is that the AI will attempt to descend or ascend to their starting altitude if given a triggered action to attack... bout to post a bug report on that one.

I tried adding an extra waypoint between the holding wp and the landing wp, but that didn't work either. I'm going to try that RTB at bingo option. I have plenty of enemy ground forces at the enemy airport they are trying to land at, so the red coalition definately has that one :).

Sometimes I run the mission, one of the Su-25s even tries to land at the airport I'm taking off from (plenty of friendly ground units there). A Hawk site at the airport takes him out, though... ED, please fix the AI, it's driving me insane!

Does the airport you want them to land at have a runway long enough to accommodate that size aircraft? Perhaps that is why they divert to the other airfield. That was my first thought.

Good idea! Maybe the AI is trying to out-think us.

However, a C-130 is made to take off and land on short strips, so this doesn't seem likely.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Very nice!

The runway is long enough. I think I figured out what caused them to divert. There's plenty of action going on around that airport before the flag is set that's supposed to make them land there, but if any parts of enemy aircraft that's been shot down ends up on the taxiways (even remote ones not needed unless an aircraft HAS to park at a specific spot.), the friendly AI refuses to land there. I'm talking about pieces big enough to cause them to burn on the ground after impact (a wing or a tail). I guess if the piece ends up on a runway, it would be the same thing, and that would be more realistic. The taxiway that was hit by debris, was not needed for these aircraft, btw. It was a taxiway leading to some aircraft shelters. Not anywhere a transport plane would want to go. They could have landed and taxied to parking without hitting anything. So, if anything hits any part of the runway, taxiways or parking areas, friendly aircraft are diverted.

BTW, the rest of that Su-25 impacted on the grass between the runway and a taxiway. It wasn't close to either, but it still might be a factor. Another factor could be that the ejected pilot parachuted down within the airport area, so that might make the game think that it was "contested" and not "friendly".
