Deacon Posted July 13, 2005 Posted July 13, 2005 Sorry to once again go over CODECS. I've seen Ace MEGA CODECS discussed as causing problems. I'm not sure if I have these (maybe under another name?) Here's a list of CODECS on my Alienware XP: IMA ADPCM Audio CODEC Microsoft ADPCM Audio CODEC Microsoft CCITT G.711 Audio CODEC Microsoft GSM 6.10 Audio CODEC DSP Group TrueSpeech Audio CODEC msg723.acm Windows Media Audio Codec Sipro Lab Telecom Audio Codec Indeo® audio software Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec lhacm.acm Microsoft PCM Converter Can someone comment on which of these, if any, could be causing a CTD at a point almost as the scenario loading progress bar reaches the end of loading a flight? I have already run three clean installs of Lock-On 1.0 and then a clean install (three times) of Flaming Cliffs over that. TIA, Deacon
D17S Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 I've heard about the Codec problem too . . . It's a long shot but well worth a look though. I don't know about your list of Codecs. Otherwisse, this sounds like what I had. I went round and round trying to find the software conflict. I finally fDisk/format'd and reinstalled XP. That fixed the problem. LOMAC ran. I'm being real cautious about what I load back in . . .especially Codecs. I think you are on the right track. This sounds like a software conflict and these conflicts are generally entirely unique to LOMAC. Post your specs, but if you have a modern system (2+gigCPU/9600 or better Vcard and 512+ ram), LOMAC can run.
ACUTech Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 "Ace Mega Codecs Pro" pack is, as it name says, a codecs package containing tens, if not hundreds of codecs (prolly has all the available codecs in there!), for playback of any type of video. I haven`t yet found one encoding not being played back with Ace Mega Codecs Pro Pack installed...Rest assured, it`s installed on my second computer :D Obviously, you don`t have it installed... =ACU=Tech TECH Systemes Computer 1 Computer 2 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Deacon Posted July 14, 2005 Author Posted July 14, 2005 Thanks for the posts, guys. That's the problem, though, T.E.C.-Leader. Citing a couple of other posts I saw in doing a search on CODECS. The Ace Mega Codecs Pro package is what causes the problems that I'm having. Am I reading you correctly? Also, LOMAC does run on this machine. Flaming Cliffs doesn't. BTW, D17S, my livelihood depends on how I keep this machine and a couple of others running (I'm a custom database programmer), so the idea of a re-format and clean install of XP Pro is _absolutely_ out of the question. The money this game costs is nothing compared to the risk involved in losing key files, etc. by doing that. Besides, if this is the only game (and I have many, mostly flight sims - but several others including Dangerous Waters and Enigma) that has this problem, then I say it's a bug in the software and not in my machine -- particularly if others have had the same problem, which looks like the case. But if anyone else has any other ideas, I'm all ears.... Deacon
D17S Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 You're absolutely right. A 'software conflict' is just a nice way to say it. There is a big, program killing bug in the LOMAC program. The format just fixes the problem LOMAC regularly has with it's operating enviroment. There's something that comes up, that is completely tollerable by any other program running in this normal and stable windows operating enviroment, that LOMAC simply refuses to run beside. LOMAC has been like this all along. (Codecs are a suspect!) As with yours, re-formats are not always an option. (You're a wise man. Fun is fun, but business is business!) So, did you remove one of those codec packs you listed and LOMAC/FC now runs. Which one of those Codecs you listed ended up being the culprit? I didn't quite get that. I'll pass it on. This codec solution could solve some problems and be very helpful. Many thanks Did you need some other suggestions? There's lots more to try before resorting to the 'nuclear option' (re-formating an old $5, 10gig HD from your local 'puter repair shop). Judging from forum posts, it's looking like 2-3 out of 100 installs have crashes of some sort. This has become almost a normal drill.
ACUTech Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 Well from what I understand from reading all this is that the "Ace Mega Codecs Pro Pack" itself maybe not be the real cause of the problem, but actually it`s one of the codec contained in it that messes with LOMAC & FC though. That would explain why you are having some problems even though AMCPP is not installed on your computer. One of the codecs you have on your pc is probably also contained in the AMCP package, creating the problem we now know... That would be my understanding of it all... =ACU=Tech TECH Systemes Computer 1 Computer 2 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
