a couple of basic questions

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have just discovered LockOn and have a couple of questions:

1) Can I play a demo of LockOn: Flaming Cliffs 2 before I purchase it? I saw it in the Download section, but it says I need LOMAC first and obviously I don't have it. And I don't see a LOMAC demo.

2) Does LO:FC2 allow for beyond visual range (BVR) air combat? From the YouTube videos I've seen, even AIM-120 has been used on short distances, as if it were AIM-9. So is there a real radar simulation (with different radar cross-sections for different machines and different angles) and can I shoot AIM-120 (and its Russian equivalent) in fire-and-forget mode at long distances? (e.g. 60km)

3) If not, do you know of any game that allows for fully featured BVR combat? With radars, electronic warfare, AWACS, etc.

I'm not sure there's a demo of FC2 available. However, the anser to all of question 2 is "yes". LOMAC and FC2 are well worth buying, you won't regret it one bit.

FC2 is the "only" simulation atm offering a "stable" Multiplayer Many vs Many East vs West BVR confrontation . While the simulation level is not as deep as in other titles (DCS, Falcon, Fsx), it remains until now the only software giving you the chance to fight in BVR with/vs other pilots using a wide range of fighters with dedicated cockpits and outstanding graphics....

There is no demo.

Yes and no. BVR is 6nm+. You'll be hard pressed to hit something 60km away, but it happens. You have to keep feeding your missiles updates until they go active. There are plenty of reasons for air to air combat to end up WVR. Missiles aren't magical.

3) If not, do you know of any game that allows for fully featured BVR combat? With radars, electronic warfare, AWACS, etc.
Sure, there's Falcon 4 Allied Force, and ... that's probably it, unless you want to go to old games like JF18 which are no longer supported.

There exists /no/ combat flight sim for the public which models EW in particularly good depth. The closest I've seen personally is JF18. F4AF models nice IADS.

I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda

Thank you all for your responses.

I assume F4AF allows the player to fly only the f-16, so there's no real PvP multiplay?

You have to keep feeding your missiles updates until they go active.
Theoretically, if the enemy doesn't see the AIM-120 and continues the same path, then surely the missile should be able to go to the precomputed point of contact and go active on its own?

What are the possible shortcomings of LO:FC2 for BVR PvP?
