Anyone know blast radius for MK-82's? Created a practice mission with Friendlies close. Placed targets about 100m (300ft) from Friendly, can get good accuracy from MK-5 Rockets and Guns. Tried with MK-82; the first time went horribly wrong! Had the wrong profile and ended up rippling 6 bombs. Killed everybody! I changed profile to SGL rip and got great rounds on target. But I set in mission editor to display message if Friendlies were DAMAGED or DEAD to say "CHECK FIRE! CHECK FIRE!". Sure enough I got that message.

If I have to use MK-82's, what is safe distance for Friendly assets?

A quick google search tells me that it has a frag radius of 200ft., so I guess the Mk-82s in DCS are realistic, given that google isn't exactly a scientific search tool :). I would just place my friendly troops farther away and test some more...

100m is too close - it's actually 'safe' if the friendlies are behind cover, but I'm not convinced that DCS takes this into account. If you have friendlies within 100m, guns.

As GGTharos correctly stated, "cover" is a most important variable for danger close drops.

The other big factor, that's probably not modeled in the sim, is the direction that the bomb is dropped from.

Unless a bomb comes in at 90 degrees, (assuming no airburst fuse) its frag cone is going to point in a certain direction

100m is too close to drop a bomb. When calling CAS, with a Mk.82 you'd usually want your troops to be at least 300m away, if not 500m.

From what I'm reading the Mk.82 has a CEP of about 110m, which means it has a 50% chance of it landing more than 110 meters away from the target.

Now, it's true that the Mk.82 is "only" a 500 pounder, but it's still a dumb bomb, and as such when dropping it you want friendly forces to be as far away as they can. :smilewink:

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I have a question on air burst bombs.

How is their blast cone shaped? It is downward shaped? It is a semi-sphere?

I'm asking this because I'm interested on making an air burst mod, simulating DSU-33's operation. I don't know yet if that's even possible within game, just doing some studies first.

This is an amazing sim! 'Nuff said!:pilotfly:

No, you can't model it in game because there's no physical difference between ground and air burst ... in game. You can blow up the bomb in the air maybe, it just won't do anything more useful than ground-bursting it :)

In accordance with U.S. military doctrine, "DANGER CLOSE" is basically defined as the employment of ordnance on a target where friendly forces are within a radius that corresponds to a 0.1% PI (probability of incapacitation).

For a low-drag, contact-fused (i.e. non-airburst) Mk-82 bomb, the DANGER CLOSE radius is 245 meters / 804 feet. For training purposes, the MINIMUM SAFE DISTANCE for a Mk-82 bomb (all versions) is 1200 meters / 3936 feet.
