There is only two differences between the retail version and the download version.

1. The download version is available right now. Retail is not (in the US at least).

2. If you break your DVD you're screwed. If you delete your download, you just download it again.

You're going to have to download a patch anyway, so from the start your "retail" version is going to be obsolete and you'll have to download anyway, so why even bother with the boxed version?

Especially since, if you have a problem with a patch, step one is going to be reinstall the full current version without patching. Which means you are going to be downloading the whole thing...sooner...or later.

That is my perception anyway! I currently have full downloads of four versions.;)

Actually I'm pretty sure the activation code you get with the boxed version would also work for a download version. So if you buy the boxed version with a disk, you should not have anything to worry about, other than waiting for the boxed version.

I was hopeful that when they released the box ver here that they included all the current patches, at least to release date, making the updating to date a minimum

Well, this is a recent posting from Wags (ED Producer) on the subject:

All of the US/Canada box assets are ready to go for duplication. We are now waiting for our distributor (Jack of All Games) to make the sell-in into various retail outlets. Despite what some might think, getting retail outlets to carry a game (particularly a flight sim) can be quite difficult and take a long time. It is out of our hands at this time. If it were solely up to us, it would have been in US/Canadian retail long ago.
