The new MSI mobo has that new BIOS thingy that's all graphical and I much prefered the old style for over-clock, hell even the jumper pins were easier. How are you guys overclocking?

Do you overclock in the BIOS or do you use windows software? The BIOS shows I'm overlocking but Windows properties still indicate 3.3 GHz although I've set it for 4.2 Ghz. And this new Intel turbo indicator jumps up and down although its disabled. So what settings do you change and where?

All my overclocking is done using the EFI BIOS. With sandybridge chips the overclocking is done using the turbo/speedstep functions so don't disable them. Your overclock will only kick in when needed (ie under high load), the rest of the time your CPU will run at lower speeds to save power and reduce heat output.

The only settings I've changed as far as CPU goes is the multiplyer and VCORE. Everything else left alone. SB chips are a hell of a lot easier to OC than previous gen CPUs.

EDIT:

And software overclocks work just as well as BIOS overclocks with SB CPUs, and in fact can actually give more options (such as more control over fan speed etc) the only problem is the often terrible software motherboard manufacturers provide. The only reason I ise the BIOS rather than the ASUS software is that the software, while it works, is aweful to use.

Thanks Eddie. Did the google thing, guess I was doing it right.

Seems strange that it doesn't show up in Windows System properties.
