I really don't know where to post this but yesterday, while flying an SU-33, I locked up a squaddie flying a KA-50 via my helmet mounted sight and I'm pretty sure my radar was off. His RWR went off and warned him of the lock. I always thought the helmet mounted sight was IR hence not detectable by RWR . Can anyone shed some light on this issue concerning the KA-50?

The Ka-50 does not have an RWR. It has an LWR - Laser Warning Receiver.

When you lock with radar off mode with one of the russian planes, it uses a laser for ranging information. This will set off the LWR.

I'm not 100% on all modes for the russian birds, but IRST does, yes.

You don't actually lock anything with your HMS. You use your HMS to direct existing sensors - the IRST or RADAR in the case of the flanker. The HMS doesn't use 'IR', 'RADAR', or 'Lasers'. Your HMS just aims what you have onboard the aircraft. By itself, it's nothing more than a really good TrackIR ;)

Its great for trolling a bunch of friendly KA-50's around the base when they won't GTFO of the way. Then watch the verbal teamchat carnage as they accuse each other of lazing the other. LMAO :D

When I realised that sometime ago, I found it amusing using the HMS, as i'm using a TrackIR to control a model of a TrackIR, in essence. Simulating doing what I'm actually doing in some weird loop :D
