Depends on several factors, but as far as speed goes the most important question is obviously resolution. Streaming at 320 res will obviously require a LOT less bandwidth than 1080p. 2mbit upstream is probably good enough for 320, but you'll most likely want 10mbps or more for a 1080p stream.

 

Also of great importance is which steam we're talking about - you having a good uplink might be completely irrelevant if the streaming service you have chosen is many hops away and has to pass a congested node.

 

Similarly, you want to ensure you have a lot of spare processing power and a good amount of free RAM to be able to effectively run a 1080p stream with all the encoding action.

By which stream, I basically mean which service. Twitch.tv is relatively good but they do tend to have a lot of issues for the viewer in my area.

 

When it comes to the software used, I unfortunately don't know. I'm sure the streaming services will have guidelines.
