lazduc Posted December 25, 2011 Posted December 25, 2011 I dont know what the problem is...I just tried to download the full program of BS2 version 1.1.1.1. The load speed was almost at 50kb/s which translates into about 30 hours give or take. I tried bit torrent but that was unsuccessful. I clicked on bit torrrent in the dl section and it sent me to another site that gave me 3 options that make no sense. Clicking on one of the options brought up another page that also made no sense. How does bit torrent work and how can I use it?? I am not going to baby sit this download for 15 to 30 hours. How does DCS hope to make any money when it is this difficult to obtain their programs ???? I see in the advertisment a box version of BS2...where can I purchase it??? Thanks....for any info. Lazduc
Revelation Posted December 25, 2011 Posted December 25, 2011 Whoa, calm down tiger... There's no issues trying to download any program except on release day. You are given options to download via ftp or http, have you tried both? For the torrent option do you have a torrent program? Since you mention bitorrent I will assume you are using the bittorent program. Are you using this link: http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/torrents/DCS_BS2_EN.torrent for the torrent program? If you are, then there should be no other options, you should download a roughly 15Kb file that you will add to your torrent program and begin the file download. EtherealN Posted December 25, 2011 Posted December 25, 2011 Tested on 7mbps cellular connection, noon 25th: FTP1: 250kB/sec FTP3: 480kB/sec HTTP1: overloaded HTTP3: overloaded Bittorrent: 500-550kB/sec BitTorrent is fairly simple: you do not download the actual simulator from ED, you download a small "torrent" file which contains information about the file in question (inlcuding hashes to ensure there's no data corruption), as well as "tracker" information - the tracker is the ED server that is keeping track of everyone who is downloading the file so they can talk to each other. This torrent file is then run in a BitTorrent program. I use the obviously named program "BitTorrent", there is however others like µTorrent, libTorrent, BitComet and probably a whole tonne of others. These programs then read the file information in the torrent file and uses that to connect to the tracker and then to several other people who is also running the torrent. I am currently running it on this box and is connected to 17 people, most of which are "seeders" - that is, people who have the entire file already by are staying online to share it with those (like this machine) that does not have it yet. My machine then downloads parts of the install files from those that have them, and uploads parts I have to people that don't have those. This means that if there's internet congestion to some people, you can still download fast from other people in other parts of the world. (My "peers" on the file right now are spread as wide as Australia, Brazil, Japan, Russia, Czech Republic, Finland, Spain, USA and Italy... Even if my uplink to, say, the USA is broken due to congestion, it'll find someone else to doiwnload efficiently from as long as it's given a little time.) I'll let this download to this machine and run it as a seedbox once it's done.
