Which is the better all around aircraft in terms of reliability and capability? Now I am a mig fan as well. And in the 29s defense. The export models were downgraded considerably and flown mostly by incompetent fools as well as poorly maintained.

Su-27>Su-33>>>>>>>> ... >>>>>>> MiG-29A. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in Russia the MiG-29A is considered an Airbase defence platform. NOT air superiority or much else.

Not sure if "airbase defence" is the right way to put it, "point-defence" would be more appropriate I think. (What you defend can be anything - a base, a city, a port, etcetera.) But yeah, pretty much. Can think of it sort of like the difference between F-15A and F-16A in the A2A role, with the former being air superiority and the latter being interceptor/point defence. (Slammers and further upgrades have changed things for the F-16 of course, but the same holds true for the newer MiG variants.)

I love them both, they just strangely beautiful in a rugged way, but I'd take an Su-27 over a Mig-29.

ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P

I do like them both as well. But since the fulcrum lacks fly by wire it would seem that the pilot has a larger man to machine connection vs a fly by wire equipped plane.

Not really. Just because you have fly by wire (rudimentary for the flanker by comparison to say an F-16 or more so to a raptor) that doesn't excuse you from knowing how your aircraft flies - it just makes handling more carefree and possibly a bit easier.

As for 'better aircraft', better at what? :)

A MiG-29A is good for defending a small patch of territory by using ambush tactics or quick raids. It is generally accepted that a large number of cheap fighters can be good defensive aircraft if used properly.

The Su-27 is an air superiority fighter - it's job is to take and hold airspace.

The Su-33 is meant to protect the submarine fleet from anti-submarine aircraft.

I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
