Ragtop Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Hi all, hopefully someone here is going to be able to solve this problem for me! My PC seems to be completely locking up almost every time when being accessed over LAN, and less frequently when reading/writing to external drives. I can't think of anything particular that has changed and started the problem, but I have installed multiple games, apps and updates between it never happening, and it being constant, so it'd be a lot of work trying to isolate anything without any direction. Of course it's one of those things you don't do everyday so it's impossible to pinpoint the exact time it started happening. I've run Avast and CCleaner as typical maintenance tasks, ran Chkdsk, and checked the Event viewer, all of which were inconclusive. Event viewer shows completely normal activity up until the file transfer starts, which is when the system crashes, which has absolutely no documentation, indicating to me that the computer is totally jamming up, meaning not even the Event Log can capture information. Ragtop Posted February 2, 2012 Author Posted February 2, 2012 About 2 years I'd say. Do you know if there's a way I can check that for sure? I have reinstalled once but I think it was quite a long time ago. 476th vFG Alumni
EtherealN Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Meh, install time is irrelevant. What's relevant is checking drivers, registries etcetera. Looks like you've done a pretty good health check already (kudos!). That said, a reinstall can probably still help you, but it's not about the age of the install, it's about something specific that happened. Unfortunately, with no logs being spawned, it's hard to figure out what exactly did happen and how to fix it, in which case a reinstall does become the easier way to solve the problem. Ragtop Posted February 2, 2012 Author Posted February 2, 2012 Is it possible to reinstall Windows without losing all my files? One thing I really don't want to go through is reinstalling all my software and games, as I am very anal when it comes to filing things! :P 476th vFG Alumni
Ragtop Posted February 2, 2012 Author Posted February 2, 2012 What about my actual files? I have a lot of rFactor mods etc and other files that would have to be re-downloaded, which is a lot of work, especially if reinstalling doesn't solve the problem. 476th vFG Alumni
Ragtop Posted February 2, 2012 Author Posted February 2, 2012 Excuse my ignorance, I'm an OS X person when it comes to day to day computing, where repairing/upgrading an OS will retain the user files. I'll avoid reinstalling the OS as long as I can, hopefully there's another solution, but thanks a lot for the input so far guys! 476th vFG Alumni
Rhinox Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 May I ask what motherboard you have? I'm especially interested in eth-chip (easy to find if you tell me mobo-model). You'd be surprised, that many manufacturers include crappy network chips even on high-end motherboards. I had one of them some time ago, been struggeling with it for a few months and finall I had to swich onboard-lan off and put extra eth-adapter (pcie) inside...
