169th_Moose Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 Hi gang. My question is when in a Su or Mig’s Locking a bandit on HOJ. You can manually extend and lower the range of your missiles with Ctrl - & Ctrl +. What’s the best tactical way, to use this feature? Basically how to judge without having labels... Does anyone actually use this feature? Or do you just wait for a burn trough… Regards
britgliderpilot Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 AWACS, or enemy radar signal strength on RWR. Both doable, although the second requires more practice. I use a combination of the two when flying against AI. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/britgliderpilot/BS2Britgliderpilot-1.jpg
Weta43 Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 With AWACS on the HDD when they get to the edge of the far side of the second box away from you on the grid, they're half teh distance written in the bottom right of the HDD away from you. Cheers.
169th_Moose Posted September 23, 2005 Author Posted September 23, 2005 Thanks for your imput, But I usualy fly without awac. Should I Extend the missiles to the max range and force a LA? Seems the question is about judging where you think your bandit is. Kind of hard when you dont have a visual on him and dont use labels. Usualy if you have visual on him then, you arleady know his too close for confort, lol :p Plz continue, shades some lights on this feature. Ed? Beta testers? Any imputs would be appreciated... Cheers
GGTharos Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 HoJ is a game of guessing (until triangulation modes are implemented) ... that's all there is to it ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
169th_Moose Posted September 23, 2005 Author Posted September 23, 2005 HoJ is a game of guessing (until triangulation modes are implemented) ... that's all there is to it ;) Cool, Triangulation modes to be implemented? wow in 1.11 or 1.2, or further down the road? GGTharos since we don’t have Triangulation feature at this point. Is it safe to say that Extending the range the missile to its max and forcing a launch authorize is a good tactical maneuver? or I'm I handicapping myself doing so?
GGTharos Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 I don't know when, but it is intended to be there eventually. And yes, that is the correct way to do so if you think your missile can reach out and touch someone - ie. if you souspect you know where they are. In practice, HoJ is a low Pk proposition though. I prefer to wait until visual, and then typically until within good firing range (typically less than burn-through) Very high altitude engagements change the rules somewhat - you can shoot farther and not worry too much about error. SniperRu Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 169th_Moose GGTharos since we don’t have Triangulation feature at this point. Is it safe to say that Extending the range the missile to its max and forcing a launch authorize is a good tactical maneuver? or I'm I handicapping myself doing so? Against AI if you do so, you will have 0% chance of hitting, basic myself on my experience, any missile launched at more than 35-40km (low-medium altitude) is totally useless. It's kinda frustrating, you have all these medium range missiles but can't launch them unless you're very close to the enemy. It's totally killing BVR IMO. For example, I've done some testing and came to the conclusion that the R-77 must be lauched at 20-25km to be fully efficient. If more, it has very low hit probability.
GGTharos Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 You don't think that 20-25km is 'BVR' or 'Medium range'? You're pretty much only just inside the range at which big SAM systems open fire, and you're using a MUCH smaller weapon. And as you know, altitude plays a big role - right now LOMAC isn't simulating missiles realistically enough to make you want to prefer long range, high-altitude launches (you get no practical advantage doing so) ... this is something that will hopefully be fixed. I'm not worried with fully active radar missiles with AI or against online players (depending who I'm against). I dont have to really know where there are, just a quick bearing on them. Especialy if they lock me up. My consideration is more with semi active missiles when flying the Su27 & 33. Thanks for your input GGTharos. Much appreciated
192nd_Erdem Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 Also I noticed that the R-27's you fire with HOJ are much less responsive for enemy movements. Not a good thing to use unless if you face a bomber or a fighter coming right on you. But of course you have plenty of them, who cares if you lose two of them even for a little chance of hitting:D
GGTharos Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 You can fire them HoJ and if you're good, time them such that when the missile is close, you get burn-through. Of course, after 1.11 NATO birds will be picking up a lock tone from HoJ locks on them, while Russian birds will not, so ... use that knowledge to adjust your tactics.
