Bushmanni Posted May 27, 2012 Posted May 27, 2012 Iraqis announced a picture of the Apache with one rotor tip out of the picture and claiming the chopper had been downed by small arms fire. Later I saw a picture of the same Apache but taken bit more afar showing the whole chopper and in this picture it had maybe 1/3 of one of the rotor blades missing. The blade tip was completely splintered. According to the source the damage was done by 23mm HE shell. Unfortunately I can't find the picture anymore as nobody seems to host that old stuff anymore. "Brought down" is one way to put it. The details of the incident have never (to my knowledge) been made public. What is known is that the crew was able to land the aircraft just fine and it had no apparent damage. It was admitted that the aircraft made a "precautionary landing", which just means any landing where you're not sure if the aircraft will continue to fly safely. So we have no idea what the damage was or its extent, but it was enough (or was imagined to be enough) that the crew made the decision to land. Hard to say what was going through their minds at the time. Whatever was wrong with the aircraft (beyond what the crew has to say) will never be known since that aircraft was JDAM'd during transport.
