From my admittedly limited knowledge about the matter the graphics engine is not as efficient or as "tweakable" as it should be. I am under the impression that the shader engine itself is somewhat at fault.

This is my idea: The shader engine itself should be reworked to include a "shader level" slider in the options that will give the user the ability to sacrifice the quality of shaders in the sim as a way to still utilize higher settings for effects and other things that use the shaders themselves with less of an fps hit. This would also make a good opportunity for ED to add in pixelshader 3.0 for those with systems that can handle it (a good option for the future-minded team that ED is).

Anyone with me here or am I just misinformed? :D

P.S. Someone else can take charge and start the "sound engine petition" so I don't appear to be a demanding fanboi . . . :)

Hey it would be nice to have a slider, but I gotta admit I get great performance with just a few tweaks of the graphics.cfg file. I've almost given up on this sim several times because of performance issues but really a few tweaks and I get great fps and couldn't be happier with my Lock-On experience.

FWIW, I'm not sure if 3.0 pixel shaders would make performance better or worse. What I mean, is with 3.0 ps maybe things would look even nicer but the performance hit would be even worse (not 100% sure on this though).

Also, I think ED so busy with the patch and Black Shark Add-on that they probably ain't going to do squat more for Lock-On engine. Really, you shouldn't have to go in and hack the config files to get decent fps but you can and performance is pretty good - I'm happy with it. But a new person or not so smart person may have a tough time with all the tweaks. It took me years of playing this sim to finally figure out a decent solution compromise of visuals, etc to get good fps and visuals - oh and 2 computer upgrades costing thousands... :)

lol

ps 3.0 would in some cases improve performance but for lomac engine I am not sure... bloom and HD rendering would definately lower some perf at quality.

I would say the best optimization is a bubble system and rendering at a particular distance. single poly lods, 5 - 10 pixel resolution for buildings at large distance.

imagine effects like that blur with gunfire and bloom with a new gfx engine.

NOTE:: NOT INGAME...it is a model render of super vasia who made this model.
