onehitxzibit Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 I am thinking about buying a laptop with a GT 630M graphics card, as it is a decent and affordable laptop GPU and I was wondering if it would be able to run DCS World. The other laptop components will probably be a dual core i5 or a quad core i7 and 6 or 8 gigs of ram (depending on my financial situation at the time I buy the laptop). My current desktop setup has a 8800GTS (the older 320MB model), 2 gigs of RAM, Intel C2D E6750 processor and I am experiencing stutter even at lower settings. Is there anyone around here that runs DCS World on a laptop and could shed some light on the subject?
EtherealN Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Would need more details on the hardware. Unfortunately "i5" and "i7" doesn't mean much in the mobile space since they use black magic on the otherwise so simple naming conventions there. If you have more detailed (Bulgarian link is fine), I can look closer. I'll take a look at the 630M in the meantime. onehitxzibit Posted September 13, 2012 Author Posted September 13, 2012 Thanks EtherealN, here's the model I am currently considering http://laptop.bg/laptops-acer-Aspire_V3_571G-acer_aspire_v3571g_NX_RZLEX_014
EtherealN Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Regarding the GPU - the 630M should be able to run it, but you will definitely be forced to sacrifice a lot of the graphics settings; it's "brute power" is way below the recommendation. I do not feel secure in saying what the performance will be. (Especially since it has big problems in memory bandwidth for the GPU.) CPU is fine - not optimal, but should work well enough. If you can find a similar laptop with a 660M or 650M (caution: there are two things called 650M and they are very different) it would be a very good machine for this purpose. Unfortunately, for laptops, it is a bit rare to find machines that have those GPU's without also being a lot more expensive on other components. :( [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester
onehitxzibit Posted September 13, 2012 Author Posted September 13, 2012 (edited) I know that laptop GPUs are not good for gaming in general so I don't have my hopes high. :D Looking at the prices a GT 640M is about as high as I can go, the 650 and 660 models are too expensive for me. From what I read on different hardware forums most current games run fine on dual core CPUs, will a quad core one be an overkill for DCS World? Edited September 13, 2012 by onehitxzibit
EtherealN Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 It is overkill for current version of DCS World, yes - though with a caveat: while DCS World only uses two cores, having extra cores does make it easier for you to use additional software at the same time - less need to close down iTunes and other things you might have running at the same time. I'd generally say that as long as the budget allows it, quad-core is what you want, if you want to be sure the computer does not get handicapped within the next few years. There is however a caveat to the caveat - for most current gaming products, including DCS World, you want a high clock frequency; a 3GHz 2-core will do better than a 2GHz quadcore. Generally speaking, if it is an option, I would recommend getting a new stationary computer instead of a laptop. It is much easier to get exactly what you need and want in that case. onehitxzibit Posted September 13, 2012 Author Posted September 13, 2012 As much as I would love to get a new desktop computer I need something that I can easily carry around. :(

GT630M is *NOT* gaming mobile graphics! Look for something with GTX, i.e. Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 (i7-3610QM, 4GB, GTX660). That is as close as possible to gaming laptop for ~800€.

That's true, but 800 € is way over my budget, I'm aiming for something around 700 € at max. Acer Aspire V3-571G (the Core i5, GT 630M variant) has decent performance and can be found for less than 600 € here in Bulgaria. (not to mention it looks pretty nice :P) Edited September 13, 2012 by onehitxzibit
Rhinox Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 OK, I understand your point. Unfortunatelly unlike LO/LOFC2, DCS is very "GPU-hungry". I'm affraid with GT630M you will be dissapointed with performance, even if you set everything to low/min/off...
