Explosion Effects

[VAF [136] Striker]

Is it possible to turn down the explosion effects. Every time I fly over explosions, smoke and fire my frame rate drops drastically. I found this in the options.lua but turning down the effects didn't do anything. It was set to 3 and I set it to 2. I normally get 35-40 and it drops to 15 over exploding targets.
