Hi all,

yesterday I finally took the plunge and bought DCS p-51.

Being a RL pilot (gliders only) and a civil fligthtsim fan, since the early days of MSFS, but not really enjoying the military side of the flight simulation world, I avoid at all cost investing on military flightsims.

Yet, I bought IL2 when it was first released, then the first Flamming Cliiffs, and now, after having returned from a long while away from flight simulation, and specially because I was really looking after a detailled flightsim, instead of the generic stuff I get with either FSX or X-Plane10. Having been told that the DCS p-51 is probably the best prop military sim ever developed for the PC, I couldn't resist... well, I tried hard, but....

1) Can the mouse be used for looking around in the cockpit, like by default when I start DCS World with the Su-25?

2) One of my main critics in X-Plane10 is the huge torque effects on almost any prop aircraft, while from real life experience as a right seater on many GA prop aircraft I know that it is primarily yaw, resulting from asymmetric slipstream hiting various surfaces of the aircraft that plays a major role during full power climbs, takeoff, etc... The ball on the turn&slip indicator moves right, asking for right foot, but bank due to torque is seldom present. On a Robin DR-400 we sometimes climb all the way (specially with a glider being towed) with right foot on rudder, but there is no need for right aileron. Now... I was surprised to find that even at null trim settings before takeoff, the ball stays almost perfectly centered and the bank to the left is the most important effect, due to torque from the powerfull, engine.

I have of course never flown a real P-51, but I was really expecting some noticeable yaw, more than bank, requiring right foot. Instead I have to keep right aileron everytime I set higher power.

Is this really like the real thing????? Shouldn't there be noticeable yaw due to slipstream hiting asymmetricaly the left side of the fuselage, low left wing (thus counteracting the left roll tendency induced by engine torque), left side of the tail and vertical fin?

3) Rudder turns, sideslips/fwd slips... Although I didn't yet try any of these I was surprised to see that at full rudder deflection, and using aileron to mantain wings level, the p-51 can't perform a "rudder turn". It seldom turns... Is this realistic? Also, this lack of rudder authority brings problems if I try to sideslip, with way too much roll authority instead...

4) Just 1 more thing - druing install of DC World I chose to install DirectX June 2010. It was unchecked by default. Is there any side effect from this. I am using Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit.

And, in the Options / Graphics I have Clutter / Bushes set by default at ZERO - what is this for? Shuld increasing this setting have major impact in the fps?

Make sure that autorudder and take-off assist are disabled.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

Use LAlt + C to toggle mouse mode.

Shouldn't cause any problem.

See for yourself ;)

As Sobek already mentioned, don't forget to check the P51 specific options (see screenshot).

Thank you all very much!

Quite a change from flying IFR flightplans in X-Plane10 to starting to learn again how to "play" with this war machine ;-)

Just one last minute note: There was no auto-rudder, but takeoff assistance was at 100%... With it at 0% and SIM flight mode (instead of GAME), this really feels great!!!!

Successful first takeoof and landing :-)

Completely unsuccessful first p-51 vs p-51 dogfight :-|
