Ian_cf-18 Posted December 24, 2005 Posted December 24, 2005 In most campaigns or missions we see in the game, it seems to me that the airbases are really close to the frontline. In understand this in terms of gameplay, but in the real world, what would be the closest distance that an airbase would be from the frontline for fighters, ground attack aircraft, etc...?
GGTharos Posted December 24, 2005 Posted December 24, 2005 Depending on the type of airbase, 40km might be reasonable - 80km much more likely. You don't want to be suddenly overrun before you have a chance to evacuate your aircraft. Ian_cf-18 Posted December 24, 2005 Author Posted December 24, 2005 Thanks! So I was wrong... the airbase distance in most mission is correct.
D-Scythe Posted December 24, 2005 Posted December 24, 2005 Thanks! So I was wrong... the airbase distance in most mission is correct. Well, not totally wrong. It depends on the type of aircraft/mission too. Slow movers that do a lot of CAS, like the A-10 and AH-64, would be positioned relatively close to the frontlines for obvious reasons. Fast movers on CAS like the F-16CG might use such an airbase to refuel and rearm quickly, but most likely wouldn't be based there. All other aircraft probably would not be based within 80 km of the frontline. For Lock On, it is more likely that most NATO fighters and strikers would fly out of Merzifon or Incirlik in Turkey.
