S77th-konkussion Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 tried updating drivers to 6.1 today- In control panel I went to remove the old drivers-I got a tiny box saying error.. Clicked ok, It then started to apparently uninstall. Fine. Reboot, and there is no more ATI in my taskbar but unlike before the res. is as I left it. It did not default to 800 or 1024 or whatever. Nothing was in control panel. Attempted to install new ones, but it stops setup. So I don't know if old drivers are there, I guess they are.. and I can't install new ones. System restore -10 days. Old drivers & ATi panel show back up in installed programs, but they are apparently not there- no ATi in taskbar. Other odd items that began about the time I installed the 1.11 patch after attempting to use that registry save tool. 1. I have a blank box in device manager. 2. USB items like cameras, thumb drives work fine, but there is no hardware tone, no confirmation icon when they are plugged in/ no "stop device". Again-All my devices appear to work normally. I have recently installed rudder pedals with no problems. 3. If I type in "www.website.com" the browser hangs for about 20 seconds, then proceeds to complete the url and opens normally. If I were to type "http://www.website.com" it opens right away. 4. "my computer" also hangs for about 20 seconds (little flashlight is searching) then it all opens normally. 5. right click a file "send to" hangs like described above. 6. SOMETIMES unzipping a winRAR- same thing. ALL the things that experience this delay have about the same amount of it. For those of you that are expert computer builders and love to toy with your registries, etc. I'm not- and I don't. Help is appreciated, but I don't need advice that requires me to possess detailed knowledge that is a lot more complicated than driver updates, etc etc. My understanding of reformatting is as follows: Back up the docs, etc that I want to retain. Unplug my USB hardware. Get out my windows CD, insert, and select "boot from disk" Should I leave my cable modem plugged in, or unplug, proceed, shut down, then plug it in and power on? Windows should load itself & drivers.. one thing I'm not sure of is that my machine came with a sound card driver disk.. figured Xp might load one on it's own anyway. I guess that's not hard- it will either load a driver or not. [sIGPIC]http://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=43337&d=1287169113[/sIGPIC]

S77th-konkussion Posted January 20, 2006 Author Posted January 20, 2006 Try running the uninstaller first if you haven't yet http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1275 I ran the one on ATI.com.. didn't seem to change anything this am, but will do this & whatever else makes sense.. slatr Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 4. Do you have another computer hooked up to this one, any mapped drives? An invalid mapped drive will slow all "browsing" of my computer or windows explorer I just hate for you to have to format..
slatr Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 Also, if you can, go to control panel , administrative tools. Go to event viewer and save a copy of your app event log and sys event log to your desktop. Please send me those via e-mail and let me look at them.
S77th-konkussion Posted January 20, 2006 Author Posted January 20, 2006 I'm being told by our IT critter here at work that something in explorer.exe is screwed up, & that the integration of my apparently broken browser into the OS is what's causing a lot- if not all-of the issues. No mapped drives (?) not on a network. Didn't check the CPU usage. HD light isn't on- don't hear anything it all looks pretty normal other than what I describe above. I've just reached the end of my patience with it now that I cannot even update the damn driver.. I'm getting SP 2 on a disk.. I might take the computer offline, reinstall windows, and update to SP2 via the CD instead of relying on the internet to update it for me. At least then I'll have a firewall to limit my exposure to threats during the time that I'll be lacking updates. [sIGPIC]http://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=43337&d=1287169113[/sIGPIC]

Pilotasso Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 Just checking: but what protection software do you use? You could have been strikken. I was last week. I nearly lost the controll of my PC. It is surprising that even consulting the most innocent looking pages you can get trojans and viruses. Norton 2005 doesnt clean most spyware out there. You would need to upgrade. I had to link My pC to my fathers laptop and clean it over the lan. Then I booted in my PC and wiped out the leftovers. .
S77th-konkussion Posted January 20, 2006 Author Posted January 20, 2006 I use macafee on auto - update and "spywareblaster" [sIGPIC]http://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=43337&d=1287169113[/sIGPIC]
slatr Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 issues Good idea on keeping if off the network/cable modem at first. I actually install Sygate firewall and AVG antivirus before I get on the internet after an install. Something else you can do before a format. (taken from askleo.com, easier than me typing it) system file checker, press Start, Run, and then type in SFC followed by its options. The most common usage of SFC is this: SFC /scannow This causes SFC to scan your system immediately. SFC can take a few minutes to run. As I said above, have your installation CD or equivalent available in case SFC needs to replace a damaged file. While it's not documented anywhere, if SFC replaces any system files, I'd reboot. I just like to make absolutely certain that the file replacement actually takes effect. You might want to do this first and then reinstall/install sp2. Just see how your time goes. A clean format and program installation might take 1.5 hours or so. If you can do a sfc check and get it going, might be 15-20 minutes.
slatr Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 spyware AVG free virus scan is what I use now, it found viruses that Mcaffee didn't.. just an option for you. Also spybot search and destroy is a good antispyware program. We have thrown a lot of information at you, but a logical progression might be 1. check for spyware 2. run another virus scan to get a "second opinion" 3. run system file check 4. reinstall sp2 Again, just got to watch the time, sometimes it is easier to reinstall windows. I would really want to be sure there were no viruses/trojans present first though.
Pilotasso Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 The best tool I found is SPYWARE DOCTOR. It even removes unwanted publicity stuff to be downloaded to your PC. Ironicaly when I was searching the reviews for another tool of the same brand (registry mechanic), the trojan struck and it started to bang on my backdoors as if there was no tomorrow. My walpaper disapeared and infection warnings poped up everywhere. My CPU was at 100% load due to this so I could do anything. The more I fought it with the mouse the worse it got, so I booted it up and left it alone. Used up my old man's laptop and fought back through the LAN. Use the Spyware doctors demo to see if you have addware trojans. Those are a pain in the bottom. You wont be able to clean it though. But at least youll know. .
Guest EVIL-SCOTSMAN Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 download driver cleaner pro and read carefully, it will remove all bad driver crap and will probably work if its just a case of mixed up driver files left somewhere on ur pc, as i had a similar problem with omega drivers and it took me ages to get it sorted til i used driver cleaner pro, its free and is magic. read carefully tho also there is a trick that i had to perform on this pc a while back when explorer and inet explorer went crazy for no reason, its a command that you type in the cmd box, and it should hopefully restore all explorer and inet explorer files, worth a shot before formatting, once you have did that then i would suggest downloading free drivercleaner pro and using that for any driver you may have to uninstall in the future. goto microsoft for the command i was telling you about, sorry but i dont got the bookmark anymore.

Guest EVIL-SCOTSMAN Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 start/run then cmd then enter it will open the cmd window, but u first have to find the comman via microsoft online help files, i did have it book marked when i had to do it on this pc about 2-3 months ago and it fixed that. but i cleaned out the bookmarks since then, i will have a look and see if i have it anywhere. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=194177 i think thats for ie5, there is another for ie6 and also some for windows explorer but the windows explorer is a pain in the ass to find.
