BitMaster Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Hey Guys, just wanted to share some experience I gathered lately while messing with the ME. Since I run OS X Mavericks all day long for my work I cannot reboot to Bootcamp and fumble with the ME when time allows. Even with SSD and fast Performance it's too much hassle to switch back and forth, saving and reopening etc... not for everyday usage. Since I use VMware Fusion for Mac ( and Workstation for Win and Linux as well ) and VMware versions of today do support DX9c I gave DCS World a shot in VMware Fusion on my Mac and heck, it not only runs the GUI, it goes ALL THE WAY with a speed I would not have expected. I run my full blown Win7-64 workhorse on VM and load DCS ME to edit and test/testfly missions while checking mail on Mavericks haha. I expect it to work in VMware Player and WS as well, so you might can think of a scenario where a capsulated Win7/8 might be useful ( Work-PC, Linux Desktop etc.. ) to edit missions and campaigns and also be able to let them run. I always liked the idea of 1 Device for all needs instead of 3 PCs and a light bill like only BG can pay. With this 2 kilo MBP Retina and VMware Fusion/DCS I am a good portion close to this ideal. With risking to install the latest NV driver for the NV-650 GT-M chip in the MacBookPro ( upgrading the Apple tested NV from within BootCamp installer ) I gained like 30% FPS :)))) YUGGGS YES !!! So if you are also a Mac User running DCS in BootCamp and still runs the stock NV drivers, make a System Restore Point, dl the newest NV driver, upgrade, reboot and recheck your FPS. It really improved playability a lot on my hardware. I was playing 1920x1200 with low settings, low vis. range but max Radius loaded ( 16GB RAM ) with somewhere around 16-30 fps depending on scene and altitude. high altitude may even hit the 40fps ( stock NV driver ). With this newest NV driver directly from Nvidia I can play Medium on Text and Scenery, load medium visibility and still gain lots of fps. I can now hover and use cockpit in KA50 with 30 fps, lowest is now like 24-25 fps but rapidly goes way up into the 60s when high up. The game got just so much better with that 10fps more when you are right at the edge and need avery fps you can squeeze out of 2 kilo Aluminium :) I think a new 27" iMac rocks this game and I would really like to hear from people throwing a new Mac Pro in full config against DCS ( with EDGE enabled the ATI crossfire works afaik ). 12 cores, PCIe SSD and Dual ATI workstation chips with 6GB each woaaaHHHHH Bit Gigabyte Aorus X570S Master - Ryzen 5900X - Gskill 64GB 3200/CL14@3600/CL14 - Sapphire Nitro+ 7800XT - 4x Samsung 980Pro 1TB - 1x Samsung 870 Evo 1TB - 1x SanDisc 120GB SSD - Heatkiller IV - MoRa3-360LT@9x120mm Noctua F12 - Corsair AXi-1200 - TiR5-Pro - Warthog Hotas - Saitek Combat Pedals - Asus XG27ACG QHD 180Hz - Corsair K70 RGB Pro - Win11 Pro/Linux - Phanteks Evolv-X
ubiquitousuk Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Thanks, I had a good experience in bootcamp on my rMBP, but will check out the new driver. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
BitMaster Posted November 26, 2013 Author Posted November 26, 2013 For the VM-settings I used 4 Cores out of the 8 listed for an i7 and 8GB RAM. The game resides on a 500GB 7200rpm Sata drive attached to USB3 with about 100MB/sec speed. For running a server, this is more than it needs I bet, and if need to be, unload Win7 with nothin' but DCS Server and tools needed and it will fit on most small SSDs. I may move that VM to my Windows machine and try it on Windows VMware Workstation but I assume it will just fire up as on Mac. Preferred for sure, Linux, sleek fast reliable, no reboots.... thats how EDGE should be my default but I guess we'll have to put a WinVM on the Linux Box and run it VMware rather than a native Linux compiled ded. server x64. From many game servers I managed in the recent 10 years, the Linux based ones where the most reliable and affordable. It won't help if the game code crashes every 45minutes but u won't need to reboot cause u moved your mouse. Anyway, running DCS in VMware enables Unity mode, so I can run just DCS as an App on my Mac Desktop in a nice Window, since it is 2880x1800...I can easily go beyond full HD and still have open space etc... very very convenient too for reading a PDF and at same time trying it out in cockpit on 1 desktop and 1 screen 15" :) Bit Gigabyte Aorus X570S Master - Ryzen 5900X - Gskill 64GB 3200/CL14@3600/CL14 - Sapphire Nitro+ 7800XT - 4x Samsung 980Pro 1TB - 1x Samsung 870 Evo 1TB - 1x SanDisc 120GB SSD - Heatkiller IV - MoRa3-360LT@9x120mm Noctua F12 - Corsair AXi-1200 - TiR5-Pro - Warthog Hotas - Saitek Combat Pedals - Asus XG27ACG QHD 180Hz - Corsair K70 RGB Pro - Win11 Pro/Linux - Phanteks Evolv-X
