I am working on the third mission which I have managed to fail it. I want to go back and play it but the camapaign keeps advancing. I already restarted the camapaign once so that I could replay that particular mission. Is there a way of replaying a mission without starting the campaign from scratch? I could not find the specific mission in my missions folder. I also tried to press refly mission before hitting next but that didn't work.

The campaign will always keep advancing and depending on how you do in the mission determines which mission you fly next. You can replay any of the missions, you just have fly it under "mission" from the main gui and navigate to it on your HDD.

I find the campaigns to be easily the most frustrating part of the series.

 

I do understand the complexities of a dynamic campaign generator, but to go backwards and only provide a completely linear campaign where we cannot restart any part of it or dismiss the mission altogether without saving. (how many of us accidentally failed a mission due to a silly mistake like pausing during a phone call).

 

The only solution I have come up with is to always copy the logbook (under saved games folder) before every flight, so when things go awry, just need to delete the new logbook and rename the copy file back to original. This can work while DCS is running, and will always revert back to original progress.

Just to add, only delete and rename AFTER you exit out to debrief.

If you fail your campaign mission but do not wish result to be logged, while DCS ingame is still running - alt-tab, right click DCS icon on your taskbar and close application, this actually force-kills your sim. Now GUI will launch with message informing you of no records for logbook, campaign won't advance.
