Weta43 Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Just writing to say how much fun I’ve been having in the Su25 lately, both trialling missions for a campaign I was doing, just cruising around & lately taking on fighters with it. It’s a good little plane ! Against the AI as long as you keep the armament equal(ish) - 2*R-60 on the Su25 & 2*AIM-9 on the opposition (F16 mainly) it’s pretty fair. (you can get in past most a full load on an F4 or F-14, but it’s a lot more work) You have to start with them on your tail otherwise you just watch them fly away till you turn your back on them, so you may as well start that way :-) I haven’t read anything from people discussing dog fighting in these – If you haven't - try it it’s fun Oh yeah - just out of interest, I always thought the AIM-54 was prohibitively expensive, but I found this out AIM-54 $477000 AIM-120 $386000 AIM-7 $125000 AIM-9 $84000 an AIM-120 is less than 20% cheaper than an AIM-54 Cheers.
Guest IguanaKing Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Have you tried dogfighting an A-10 driver who is trying to kill you? I have found the Hog to be pretty handy against the T-Frog in a knife fight. That's a lot of fun. :icon_supe But the T-Frog or Vanilla Frog are about the only aircraft a Hog driver can turn and burn with for more than a few seconds.
Weta43 Posted February 4, 2006 Author Posted February 4, 2006 I have - & yes it is. I fact with the AI I think I've found the hog more of a handfull than the F-16 (AIM-9's only) you can take a couple of rounds from the F-16 once he's got rid of his sidewinders, but the hogs gun messes you up quickly... It's a bit of a toss up whether to take the 25 or the 25T for that though, the "T" has the R-73 & a propper gunsight, but is a pig, where the 25 is a nice plane, but you've got the R-60, which is fairly crap & just that cross for aiming the gun Cheers.
Guest IguanaKing Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Yup...the Hog is one mean turning machine, it just doesn't do well in a kinetics fight. :D
GGTharos Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 The hog will turn with anything. If you make the mistake of going low and slow with it, you're toast ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Guest IguanaKing Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Yup...I've seen it from the ground, first-hand. 300 knots and she still gracefully pivots on her wings and reverses direction. :icon_evil
Weta43 Posted February 4, 2006 Author Posted February 4, 2006 Like watching aerobatics from a PAC Cresco or a Fletcher Fu24 :-) Cheers.
Guest IguanaKing Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 I haven't seen either one of those. ;) The thing that always impressed me most about the Hog is that it can do what it does...all while being absolutely friggin' HUGE. :icon_supe
Weta43 Posted February 4, 2006 Author Posted February 4, 2006 I went to an airshow a few years ago mostly to see a P51 that was there. At some point an aerobatics team flying these turned up. I thought it was going to be sad, but they were good - & all reeaalllyy slow... everything happening right over the airfield http://www.aerowork.co.nz/aircraft.htm Cheers.
Guest IguanaKing Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 The DH Tigermoth I've seen a few times, we have one around here. The P-51 is definitely an awesome aircraft. Here's a picture of mine with me in it. Just kidding. That's me in it, but I'm just the guy who works on its flight instruments and radios. :D
Shaman Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Take a note that we fly with AFM, where paper plane which is even fully loaded A-10 in LockOn has a huge advantage in manuvering because it lacks AFM. After so much time spent with AFM when I fly any other non-AFM plane I feel like I'm playing arcade game. 51PVO Founding member (DEC2007-) 100KIAP Founding member (DEC2018-) :: Shaman aka [100☭] Shamansky tail# 44 or 444 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 100KIAP Regiment Early Warning & Control officer
Guest IguanaKing Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Yes...I know. Lack of AFM in the case of the A-10 though is somewhat of a handicap for it, since the turn performance isn't quite up to realistic levels. If it gets an AFM...we'll be able to turn even tighter. :p
Brit_Radar_Dude Posted February 5, 2006 Posted February 5, 2006 AIM-54 $477000 AIM-120 $386000 AIM-7 $125000 AIM-9 $84000 an AIM-120 is less than 20% cheaper than an AIM-54 ...but are all those prices converted into 2006 dollars ? If not, I don't think you can really compare them. Example - I bought my 3 bed house in the 80's for 30K and 5 years ago my sister bought her 1 bed apartment for 60000. But that doesn't mean that 3 bed houses are 50% cheaper than 1 bed apartments ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Sorry Death, you lose! It was Professor Plum....
Weta43 Posted February 5, 2006 Author Posted February 5, 2006 The numbers were off one of those millitary information sites - FAS or something - I got them at work & I can't remember which site, but as they were going through the various variants and talking about the % costs of the various components in some of the missles (AIM-120 & others I think) & were up to date enough to have discussions on the plans that had existed to upgrade F-14's and why those plans fell through, where plans went after that + discussions about how when the US got hold of R-73's they discovered they were superior in every respect (including the seeker's ability to lock on maintain a lock & reject flares etc, which I was surprised at) to the AIM-9 & where that had taken American & European developments since then, they seemed reasonably onto it, up to date & I guess that they'd have had the sense to convert to the equivalent dollars for whatever year they were writing. When did the first AIM-9 come out ? $84 000 would have made it an expensive missile then. Cheers.
Brit_Radar_Dude Posted February 5, 2006 Posted February 5, 2006 $84 000 would have made it an expensive missile then Not to a military that has in the past payed $20,000  for a hammer - LOL :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Sorry Death, you lose! It was Professor Plum....
Guest IguanaKing Posted February 5, 2006 Posted February 5, 2006 Heh...I owed the IRS $300 one year in taxes. I told them I'd get a brand new screwdriver and donate it to the 140th FG at Buckley AFB, and that they could send the check for the difference any time they wished. They weren't amused. :D
355th_Flip Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 The A-10 is actually pretty good at knife fightin...Ive shot down an SU-27 with guns and an SU-33 with a Sidewinder in a Multiplayer Mission in the Jabog 32 Server, was great fun! Got a SC of the SU-27 scoring... Flip
peterj Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Iv'e also set up dogfights in these aircrafts, it's fun the push the 25/AFM. Staying in your envelope in the 25 isn't easy, presumable it could be used as an advantage, http://www.lockon.ru/index.php?end_pos=574&scr=default&lang=en What's the thin line in the first graph, derivative?
