  1. OK another update (sorry to keep replying to my own posts). I have managed to get ILS working properly at least at one airport. If I am correct, ILS relies on a radio beacon does it not? So therefore you would need radio working, no? In my manual, it told me that the "\" key brought up radio menu. It never worked for me and just made me frustrated. Then I found a video from LongLegsLynch's youtube channel which mentioned that the radio menu key is "#" on UK keyboards. That worked for me, I finally got the radio comms menu up for the first time. This in turn enabled me to request landing permission as I approached an airport, then as if by magic the ILS crosshairs appear and work, I can fly em manually or put the aircraft in path hold an it flies the approach automatically. So far this has taken me 4 days to figure out !! (dam crap manual) Are the above related? does this make sense?
  2. RTFM ? The manual authoring remains DCS's Achilles heel. The manual jumps about a lot, skimps over some bits and is verbose with other bits. It has no real start - middle or end. It's a mess just like the manuals in FC and LOMAC. I happen to think that the flight sims are the best ever. FC2 and now a-10c are stunning, simply stunning. Nothing compares to them. However they are let down by awful manuals which is such a shame.
  3. OK I need to take this 1 step at a time because I have now uninstalled FC2/Lomac and re-installed LOMAC alone. With LOMAC, I applied the patch and tried to get ILS going. Could not! So folks, ca I ask the following 1. How do you get the a10 into ILS mode? 2. Do you need to be in an autopilot mode first? (say path hold? or alt hold?) 3. Let's say I'm approaching an airport, I line up with runway, about 6-8km out, I bring her down to around 2000 feet, 190KIAS on a heading in line with runway. I am in manual flight mode just using stick and instruments. How do I now engage ILS - take me through the basic key combinations. Many thanks for any help
  4. So you guys reckon the HUD ILS is removed from FC2 eh? Jesus wouldn't it be nice if that was mentioned in the dam useless manual. What a waste of time. But hang on, how come I'm not getting any radio comms such as "you are below glide slope" ???
  5. Dimebag1 I cannot seem to engage ILS mode. I line up with runways on visual, I press 1, ADI engages ILS as I can see the crosshairs on it, but my HUD does not. I get the R height scale along the right of the HUD but no cross hairs. For the other posters, I am not trying to play the game with my arms folded. I have already spent a lot of time learning to fly by stick and land manually. Now I am simply trying to learn the different NAV modes in the a10 - that's all. What am I doing wrong that I cannot get the ILS glide slope or localiser to show on the HUD?
  6. Thanks folks for all your replies and help. Overnight I managed to get an old copy of LOMAC off a cousin and then I purchased and downloaded FC2. I read the manual but it's just awful. It's way way incomplete and totally inadequate. For example, how do I engage ILS in the a10? The manual does not cover that, nor do the training vids even though one of the titles would suggest so. When I create a simple nav mission, and then fly it, my a10 does not seem to follow the way points or at least, does but only kinda. I'm creating take off, turning (or sometimes fly over) way points and ending with a landing way point. Taking off happily, than L ALT - 6 should get me into way point follow mode, it does but the plane seems to follow a course that makes no sense to me. I can cycle thru points (CTRL `) but end up having to take over. When I reach IAF, I see no ILS fix, nothing for ILS on HUD. The whole thing is utterly confusing and the manual just makes things worse cos all it does is disappoint. Best flight sims in the world by far  Worst manuals in the world by far :helpsmilie: Pease help me if you can. Just trying to learn simple NAV in the a10. BTW - I have already learned a lot. I am now comfortable with the 5 main NAV instruments and can NAV with head down etc, I am totally of-fey with HSI and ADI and understand how to make turns and correct course using these etc. All I need now is to understand using the a10's ILS and auto heading modes. What I'd like to do successfully 1. Create a simple NAV mission taking off from an airport, navigating 6-7 waypoints at various altitudes, headings etc that go to make up a circle bringing me back to the airport for an ILS landing. Like I say, I can create the mission and fly it, but the aircraft seems to have a mind of its own and I cannot figure out how to engage ILS.
  7. Hi folks, I have been trying to learn the new a-10c but it was such a steep learning curve that I went and bought FC2. Installed it tonight and then sat down and read the manual. I am trying to start simple, so all I wish to do is a little nav practice in the a10a. I create a mission, set up a few way points starting with a takeoff from runway. then a number of turning points (I have also tried flyover points) at specified altitudes, speeds etc and loop around until I create a final landing point back on the runway I started from. I save the mission and fly it, no matter what I do, the a10 seems to fly some random flight plan. I tried it with flyover points and it seems a little more accurate except for the final point (runway), it did not turn onto it, it turned away. Can I say at this point, that I find the manual to be very inadequate here. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? It's frustrating having invested so much time (and cash). BTW: I am using Nav mode [1], and LALT - 6 which according to the key commands manual for the a10 is 'Course Follow'. Many thanks for any help
  8. MrYenko Unfortunately, I'm in Ireland. Dont think Platinum is available to us:(
  9. Revelation, This is a brilliant and thank you so much. It makes me feel very lazy and I can assure you that is not the case. It's great to get a succinct, simple, concise insight into the mission editor. Video is a very strong medium especially in the modern day web 2.0 scenario. I learn from video so much quicker than text. Thank you again
  10. Wow Just checking in on the thread and amazed to see so many people offering great advice. Again I wish there was a thanks button. Thanks everyone so much. I have a bit of sim experience. As far as the fundamentals are concerned, I have read up and kind aknow what I'm doing wrt - Air Breaks, Flaps, Speed, Altitude, Keeping the Vector on the near end of the runway etc. I find it tricky to keep the aircraft pointed correctly, constantly having to correct, as I get nearer, these corrections get bigger and bigger. I am working on my inputs trying to keep them gentle and minimal. I guess this is down to practice. Last night, I looked into buying Flaming Cliffs 2 as a way to learn an easier sim before taking on this one. I found the Lockon shop very confusing. I can but a download of FC2 but I must buy LOMAC in order for it to work. LOMAC is only available as a DVD (can't be downloaded). Bit of a mess if you ask me.
  11. Hi leafer I am using a brand new x52 Pro out of the box with no profile. Find it a bit jumpy tbh.
  12. Frederf Sounds like a dream:), wish I could do it so smoothly. Many thanks everyone.
  13. Many thanks Kylania, I love the atmosphere that the snow and sky creates. I bet the pilot has "Driving home for Christmas" playing on his iPod in that cockpit.
  14. Thanks folks. I had already tried a lot of the suggestions here and watched headspace's videos etc. I have been trying kylania's mission and it is quite tough. I think the sim is being very kind to me as I plummet to the runway though.
  15. Help me land please (Beginner) Hi folks, I have been trying to follow the landing training mission all evening. By the time he tells me to switch on ILS, I am way out over the sea, he tells me I should soon have visual on the airport etc. I have tried slowing the plane down to well under 200KIAS. I have paused to read instructions etc. I'm finding this mission impossible. There's a stage where he gives you control and you have to navigate to the airports heading. I steer to that heading but find I am always having to over correct. Is there a way to tell autopilot the heading and have it fly there more precisely? Also is there a way to tell auto pilot the required air speed? I have been trying to trim the aircraft also but I end up chasing it, up, then down etc. This training mission leaves me wondering where I am, whats gone wrong, how do I get back without having to load the whole thing over and over again etc. Can anyone help me with landing. Is there a simpler approach to start with? Many thanks
  16. Tyger, from a few days of reading the forums, I came across links to your youtube page and have seen a few of your vids. They are awesome. What makes a great game more than the sum of its parts is a great community, and people like you make a great community.
  17. Hi WarriorX Thanks for the advice. However, if you read my OP, you may conclude that your advice is precisely what I am doing / trying to do. I am trying to collate and promote a learning guide for beginners that takes it 1 step at a time and builds gradually. However, I do appreciate the input.
  18. I wish there was a Thanks button. Very grateful to you all. Also bear in mind, I'm not expecting anyone to do the work for me. I just need a structure and hopefully is this thread becomes popular, it can be used by others. I might do a few videos myself based on my learning / experiences (once I learn how to do that).
  19. I'm not able to log in to the link on that thread? Also the link seems to be for flaming cliffs 2 which adds to my confusion. I thought I was dealing with a-10c ??
  20. I am a beginner as I may have stated before. I find the whole approach of the manual to be from an experts perspective and I immediately get lost with acronyms, information overload and jargon. After reading parts of manuals and browsing the forum, here's my learning wish list. 1. Installation, Setup controllers, calibrate controllers, get a good starter profile for controller. 2. Learn the sim interface 3. Basic cockpit overview (basic) 4. Beginners flight manual 4a. Basic instrument systems, explanation for each instrument, how to use them 5. Starting the a10 (good video already exists) 6. Create a basic mission 6a. Take off from runway 6b. Take off from hangar, including startup, taxiing etc 6c. Repeat the above at night 7. Create a basic mission (take off, land at neighbor airport) 8. Create a mission involving 3+ way points 9. Create a refueling mission 10. Create an array of emergency recovery missions 11. A guide to each system in the plane. e.g. Learn radios, learn radar, learn ILS etc. I would like to learn each system one by one and learn them well before I get exposed to acronyms, or multitasking etc. 12. Bring on the weapons / weapons systems This is a whole manual all in itself. Again from the above approach starting off with the basics, say just shooting the canon, and developing from there. How does this sound? Have I left anything out? Any advice as to how I would go about following this curriculum? Might this thread be of use to others? (hopefully) I would really welcome feedback, correction, advice or discussion here. I adore the sim, it looks awesome. It is a landmark achievement by DCS; But as a beginner to flight sims, (never mind weapons), I am just lost and feel almost intimidated by the manual - it makes me feel rather stupid.
  21. Fantastic, many thanks MB

  23. Hi from Ireland Hi folks I have been waiting in anticipation for the release of A-10c, so I have just pre-ordered and am a paid up fan. In my anticipation, I have just built myself a decent pc and invested in a TrackIR and X52 Pro. Let the good times roll
