  1. How do I know when the damage is repaired? Does the visible damage disappear? And that leads to the next topic of discussion - how to get back in the air. I don't have a Right Windows key, so I restart the engines by pressing Shift/Home and Alt/Home, correct? Then what? Wait until the little needles get to a certain point and level off before advancing the throttles? Thanks for the info. Ed
  2. I found a few threads on this at the Ubi forum. One observed the same result with the Left Windows + End keys - leaks repaired, but not other damage. So I deduce that is the way it is supposed to work. I would try to jump to a wingman's plane, but any that are left are usually all shot up also. So that leaves ejection/recovery as the only way to get back into action with all systems functioning - correct? Ed
  3. How do I repair damage to my A-10 (or any plane)? I know how to refuel and re-arm, but I'm usually pretty shot up when I return to base, so I also need some duct tape or band-aids at least. I read somewhere that the combination of Left Windows + End keys would do it, but that hasn't worked for me. That seems to fix leaks but not visible damage or flight-control problems. Is there also a time element, or what? Thanks. Ed
  4. Is there any reliable information available on how many are in fact still flying and how they are armed? Ed
  5. Holy Crap! That jumbo jet was angled a good 45 degrees to the runway just before touchdown. And calling it a "touchdown" is kind. Holy Crap! Ed
  6. For what it's worth, my first thought is that it doesn't much matter where you put the swap file. With 2GB of system RAM and 256MB of graphics RAM, it seems unlikely that you are going to need it much if at all, unless you are doing some big video editing projects or other applications that eat a fantastic amount of RAM. Also, regardless of where you put it, if you need it while flying LockOn, your FPS will drop to slideshow regardless of where it is. Ed
  7. Thanks for the tutorials, Ironhand. Thanks to you, I no longer feel helpless in the Flanker against U.S. first-string fighters. In fact, I am becoming so successful using your tactics that I now feel conflicted about shooting down so many U.S. planes. I won't stop, but at least I feel bad about it. :D Ed
  8. Umm, I didn't see the original thread and so can't add much to the discussion on that, sumoscouse. But I would definitely like to know more about the "tit bits" that are to be released. Ed :D
  9. Thanks, Ironhand. I had been setting up vehicles/targets in single-object groups, based on a lack of knowledge of how the Mission Editor works. I am now setting up multi-vehicle groups. And for what it's worth, my approach is to set up the higher value primary targets - which my sneaky bastards on the ground are lasing - in a group; and the other vehicles - including Strelas and ZSUs, which I have to find/avoid on my own - in other groups. I think it represents a fairly realistic approach. But whether it does or doesn't, I have gained a profound appreciation of the "D" model mavericks and their long-range eyes.
  10. I have run into a problem when trying to designate more than one target in A-10 missions. I can set the destruction of each vehicle in a convoy as a mission goal. However, after I designate one vehicle as a target object, I cannot designate another vehicle. When I try, the ME moves the designator to something nearby to be targeted as a building. What am I missing? Relatedly, were the members of the development team that wrote the manual kept in the dark about the fact there is a mission editor in the sim?
  11. Happy New Year. And amen, EVIL-SCOTSMAN. Ed
  12. Thanks for the link, leafer. I just ordered. Ed
  13. I too would like to get Flaming Cliffs on CD. However, it's not listed at the NaturalPoint.com homepage, and I have seen forum references that indicate it han't been available there for some time. A google search does not find it anywhere else. So does anyone know of any place where the CD is available, or am I condemned to a multi-night download on my dialup connection? Ed
  14. I have not specifically fiddled with the graphics settings to test their effects on the Mission Editor. I have them generally at lower settings, recognizing that my hardware is pretty skimpy for LO. I have splurged on "objects visible distance" (or whatever it's called) by setting that to medium rather than low. I needed that one because I mostly fly the A-10, and I like to spot the Shilkas before they shoot me full of holes. So I don't think there is much I can give up in the graphics settings. But I will take a look at it. As for LOMAN, It's for managing add-ons, right? Does it do more? I have it stored somewhere on my HDD, but I haven't used it. It was one of the things I had hoped to get to in my new, ramped-up attitude toward LO. The same goes for FC. :D Ed
  15. I ran Memtest86 for 8 passes/95 minutes, I think, without finding any errors. The common wisdom is that most shaky memory will be exposed within an hour or so, but it's generally recommended that it be allowed to run longer, for some number of hours. So I may fire it up again and let it go all night just to be sure. Ed
  16. I was referring to the graphics hardware acceleration slider/settings. So I tried the sound hardware acceleration at the lowest/off position on the slider. No joy. And, yes, I have reinstalled LO a number of times in the months I have been using it, and that makes no difference. Also, I find it very weird that the problem only shows up in ME. It's hard for me to believe that the ME stresses the hardware more than all the eye candy during gameplay. Was it the same for you, Christopher M? Did you have freezes in the ME but not during gameplay? Ed
  17. No, no problems. The system is rock solid in everyday usage, mostly web surfing and word processing, and in benchmarks/stress tests. The only background programs are MBM5, a temperature monitoring application, and an application that monitors the HDD temperature. Shutting those down does not help. And, relatedly, I vary rarely encounter a freeze in gameply, as opposed to the almost certain freeze in the ME. I have a few minor tweeks enabled thorugh TweakUI - i.e., no shortcut arrows - but nothing I can remotely imagine that would cause this problem. Ed
  18. Thanks for the reply, christopher m. I have tried running the FSB at standard speed, 200MHz, but it seems to make no difference. I also note that my motherboard allows me to lock the RAM speed at 200MHz while upping the FSB speed to 250MHz. Because RAM generally will not overclock nearly as well as the FSB speed or CPU, that feature greatly opens up overclocking potential and is one of the big reasons I bought this motherboard. I have also tried running my graphics card at standard speed and overclocking it around 10 percent. That also seems to make no difference. Nor do different drivers for the graphics card. Ed
  19. I have been a casual LO pilot for awhile now and am trying to do a little more, including some mission editing. However, I usually encounter an unrecoverable freeze if I am in the editor for more than a minute or so. Most of the time, the mouse arrow disappears, and there is no response to the keyboard, although the sound continues. Sometimes, however, there is a full-screen graphic glitch A technique I have used with some success is to create/change things, save them, and leave the editor before the feeze, and then repeat the process for each thing I want to create or change, but that is a pain in the butt. Also, sometimes I can stay in the editor for several minutes without a freeze. I am running LO 1.02 with generally lower graphics settings at 1024x768 @ 32-bit depth. Also, I have the hardware acceleration slider set one notch down from max, thanks to information I got off this board. That helped considerably with game play but not the mission editor freezes. My system specs: Mobo: Abit IC7 CPU: Intel P4 2.4GHz (Northwood) @ 3.0GHz (FSB @ 250MHz) RAM: 1024MB Mushkin Standard PC3200 Graphics Card: Chaintech nVidia FX5700 (the real one, not the LE) Windows XP SP2 Any ideas? Ed
