ssd vs. platter-based drives and FPS performance
siefex replied to siefex's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Thanks, I did already look at your post and disabling power saving on my ATI card did help somewhat. Still though, my performance in DCS, and other games like Bulletstorm, is not consistently smooth. I think I have multiple factors going on here. Perhaps the SSD will help, perhaps not. It's worth a shot though given that I'm running out of options at this point. -
ssd vs. platter-based drives and FPS performance
siefex replied to siefex's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I'm curious about this. What do you mean by "SPDs?" and how would you recommend I go about looking up RAM timings? I know mine should be set to 9-9-9-24. Are you suggesting I go into BIOS settings and confirm that my mobo actually has these timings correct? I never did that. I can try that when I get home tonight. Anyway, great idea; that may smooth out my performance. -
ssd vs. platter-based drives and FPS performance
siefex replied to siefex's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Here's the odd thing: I have a powerful system and still only get like 20 FPS or below on the ground and around 50 FPS in the air. I'd like to be getting at least 30 FPS on the ground but don't want to compromise graphics settings. Here's my setup: Win 7 Ultimate 64-Bit Asus M4A78T-e Mobo Phenom II 1090T @ 3.2 Ghz 8 GB DDR3 RAM @ 1333 Ghz 2 XFX 6950s 2 GB each in Crossfire (but I'm in windowed mode so only can use one since I use Helios) 500 GB WD hard Drives. (going to be adding an SSD soon) Claro Halo Sound Card Antec 750 Watt PSU 3x24" Dell U2410s at 1920x1200 1 Acer 23" T230H Touchscreen I'm running DCS A-10 in windowed mode with Eyefinity a resolution of something like 5870x1200. I don't have my exact graphic settings for DCS available right now but most are on Med to High. So mainly I'm trying to correct the stuttering but, even if the SSD doesn't correct that, then it will still allow me to run windows 7 much faster. Also, please feel free to point out anything in my system you think could be bottlenecking my performance. -
ssd vs. platter-based drives and FPS performance
siefex replied to siefex's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Thank you for your response. Please allow me to nuance my statement: I am experiencing a series of loading stutters in-game which I believe MAY be due to an overcrowded hard drive. My hope is an SSD will smooth out my performance. I read of one or two users who said they saw a slight increase in FPS with SSD so I also wanted to confirm if that was true at all given that textures can "technically" be loaded faster. However, I am doubtful of this, especially based on your comment. My primary goal is to smooth out my performance. I suppose that's what I'm most curious about: has anyone else experienced such a benefit from moving to SSD? -
I just purchased a Corsair Performance 3 128 GB SSD. Just curious what, if any, framerate benefits users here are experiencing from using SSDs with DCS vs. platter-based drives. If you do not know the specific increase in FPS, did you experience any noticeable increase after switching over to SSD? Aside from simple FPS increases, I'm getting a good bit of stuttering (which I think is due to the fact that I have a 500GB platter-based drive nearly full of data). So I'm hoping a clean SSD will help resolve some of the stuttering; although some of the stuttering is due to DCS. Anyway, I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on this.

Is there a way to zoom faster than the standard * and / keys on the numberpad? The speed of numberpad zooming is ok but not fast enough for me. Thanks! Edit: Perhaps this will help clarify - Is there a different key or set of keys people use for quick zooming other than * and /. I saw in one of Tyger's movies (a frequent user of these forms), that he was hitting a key to jump very, very quickly between zoom levels. He was not using snapviews since his trackIR was still working. That's what set me off to ask this question.

Hello all, I noticed under "view" in the options -> controls menu that if you hit RCTRL+NUM0, you should be able to save user-defined cockpit views / angles. In relation to this point, I also noticed in the "views.lua" file that, supposedly, user-defined saved angles are placed in the snapviews.lua file. The problem is, after I hit RCTRL+NUM0 while in the simulation in order to save a specific view, the angle data does not appear in the snapviews.lua file. Also, I did whatever the views.lua file told me to do regarding changing a value to "false" in order to allow for user-defined snapviews to be saved. Anyone have any thoughts on how to resolve this problem? Or, am I incorrect in thinking that RCTRL+NUM0 should save custom angles to be used with snapviews? Note that I have already got my snapviews all working by setting my own coordinates in the snapviews.lua file but that took HOURS and I never want to do it again. Just want to see if this is an easier option to use in the future in case I want to change anything. Thanks!

Just purchased this morning...impressed (yet, overwhelmed)
siefex replied to robnpat's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
You should seriously consider purchasing Helios and, if you have the money, a touchscreen monitor as well. Here are links to both: Helios: http://www.scsimulations.com/index.php/software.html Acer 23" Touchscreen Monitor: http://www.amazon.com/Acer-T230H-bmidh-23-Inch-Display/dp/B002TLTEAA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1299008965&sr=8-1 I cannot tell you how much of a difference Helios + a touchscreen monitor makes. I would say it is even more helpful (by far) than a TrackIR in terms of ease of access to your controls. In a nutshell, Helios lets you overlay a secondary monitor with all your switches and avionics from your A-10 so that, if you have a touch screen monitor, you can simply "touch" or flick which switch you want to activate. While this does sound frivolous, it is not. It makes a huge difference with regard to how "immersive" the whole simulation experience feels. Combine that with a TM Warthog and you're all set! Just be sure to set aside $1,000 first... Anyway, just wanted to pass this along. -
Thanks Huckle, that's exactly what I was looking for! Really appreciate it.

Bump - Anyone know which .lua files to edit? Thanks
-
A few weeks ago, someone made a post explaining how to change the red, enemy labels to only display a "," above each enemy by editing .lua files. I tried searching for this post for quite some time now and have had no luck. Would someone mind either linking me to the post or explaining what .lua files I should edit? Thanks for the help!

TrackIR 5 Problems with Upward Pitch Movement
siefex replied to siefex's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Trust me on this one: I am not going outside the camera's FOV. The dots are still completely in view. Even when I put the camera at eye level and sit 3 feet away from it and move my head a completely reasonable amount of distance up, the red dots appear in the locations I specified. So I don't know man. Any other ideas? -
TrackIR 5 Problems with Upward Pitch Movement
siefex replied to siefex's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Thanks again for your input Ilikepie! I have my monitors on movable arms which can lift the monitor very high in the air or close to the desk surface. I will try raising the monitor more tonight and see what that does. For all practical purposes, this is really a minor problem. I can still look "up" in my cockpit to see all my instruments; it's just that, once in a blue moon, I really need to look up to see something on the ground when upside down. I just don't like being limited where I have to wonder, if I look up too much in this situation, will my camera go crazy? My main concern is if the camera itself is bad. I will, however, first try reverting my drivers and see what that does. I just wish this device was less finicky. That aside, Track IR is truly amazing. I can't imagine flying without it anymore. Do let me know if you have any further thoughts. Peace! -
TrackIR 5 Problems with Upward Pitch Movement
siefex replied to siefex's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
ilikepie, What did you do to "raise" your camera 5 inches above your monitor? I think this would help me a great deal. When I put my monitor in portrait style and use it, the fact that the monitor is higher in the air does alleviate the problem. But, when I"m upside down in the plane and want to look at the ground, my view starts to jump all over the place if I look too far upward. Thanks for the input! -
TrackIR 5 Problems with Upward Pitch Movement
siefex replied to siefex's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
No, not wearing any glasses. Although my face does shine with radiance every now and then. Perhaps that is it? -
Hello all, I just posted the following message on the NaturalPoint forums but wanted to post it here as well in case any of you, who are far smarter than me ha!, would have any additional ideas / input of what I should do. Thanks! - I just received my TrackIR 5 and enjoy using it. I, however, have encountered a problem when I look up (i.e. pitch movement up) with either the TrackClip Pro or the hat TrackClip. What happens is, when I look up about 30 degrees from center, a red dot appears underneath the middle tracker of the TrackClip Pro or two red dots appear underneath the two bottom trackers of the hat TrackClip. This causes sporadic movement in-game when I look up at the aforementioned angle. I am absolutely positive no light sources are interfering with the operation of the TrackIR sensor, and I am sitting about 2.5 feet away from the sensor with it mounted slightly to the left of the top of my monitor at eye level. Since this issue occurs for both the TrackClip Pro and hat TrackClip, I do not believe it is a problem with either of the head sensors. Instead, I am concerned that the camera itself is damaged or is malfunctioning for some reason. I have tried using light filtering but that has not helped at all and I've tried using the sensor in other locations without any external light sources but, again, the problem persists. Please allow me also to emphasize that, aside from 30+ degree upward pitch movement, all other movements are captured perfectly by the sensor, regardless of which head tracking device I use. Anyway, I wanted to mention this issue here on the forums in case other uses have encountered this issue or to inquire if my sensor itself is faulty. Thanks in advance for any input offered.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I think I have figured out a way to rearrange my desk so that my TM Warthog is in a more comfortable position. I'll post a picture soon for your reference. Might help someone else out with their own planning.
-
Thanks Viper for the link. I may do something like that. Well, I guess I have a new project for my pit. I feel like I spend more time just configuring everything compared to actually playing A-10 ha.
-
I"m confused, what kind of "wood" are you talking about? I mean, I have "wood" which is fast and easy to work with, but it ain't cheap.
-
I tried to figure out many different / non-sexual ways to word my original post but just couldn't think of any. Whenever you talk about a "stick" between your legs, it's unavoidable...
-
Dear lord I knew this was going to go in the wrong direction...haha. Seriously though, anyone have any "legitimate" answers.
-
I want to mount my TM Warthog stick as it should be: between the legs resting on some sort of device connected to the floor for stability. Does anyone know of any flight stick mounts which would work with the TM Warthog? I do not have the money / space to afford a fully separate flight seat or traditional pit. As a result, I need something which will work with an office chair and rest securely on the floor. Any ideas? Thanks for the advice.

Multi-monitor set-up guide & help (unofficial)
siefex replied to MadTommy's topic in Multi-Display Bugs
Hi all, I wanted to know if the following multi-monitor configuration is possible to setup. I want to use eyefinity to create a 5760x1200 resolution spanning three monitors and then use 1 or 2 other monitors to display my MFCDs. Will windows / the ATI CCC allow me to extend my desktop onto one or two extra monitors in addition to my eyefinity monitors? Also, since I only have 5 video connectors on the back of my primary XFX 6950 and I want to connect up to 6 monitors, can I connect the sixth monitor to my second crossfired 6950? If I cannot, do you have a suggestion of how I should connect the sixth monitor? Thanks for the help. -
Thanks for all the help WarriorX. I went into axis control settings and my 6 different game controllers were assigned to nearly everything. That's so bizare. So, I cleaned everything up as you guys said and now the rudder pedals work great! I even fixed the issue with the rudder pedals not adjusting the A-10's horizontal movement enough. About the beta forum access, I was promised access in the receipt e-mail I received after I purchased A-10. I, however, am unable to access the forum. I get a "insufficient privileges" message or something similar. Any idea what I should do? I already e-mailed the webmaster so hopefully he can clear everything up. Thanks again for all the help everyone. Nice to know there is a forum out there to help me navigate this huge / extremely complex game. And just BTW, the Saitek Combat Rudder Pedals are absolutely amazing. Top-notch build quality and so fun to use.
-
Ok guys, I have done a good amount of research on my end. Most of the problems are now resolved. I just installed the software for the Saitek Combat Rudder Pedals (not the driver) and the uncontrollable roll issue disappeared. I have not yet checked through the axis assignments but I will do that shortly. There are two other problems which remain. First, while in-flight, when I move one of the rudder pedals, my plane moves horizantially for a very, very short distance then starts to tip drastically in that same direction. Please allow me to emphasize that I understand that if you use too much rudder, your A-10 will start to roll out of control. However, when I use the rudder keys on my keyboard, I am able to turn about twice the distance horizantially before I start to lose control of my plane. Second issue: when I go into options to specify button assignments for the combat rudder pedals, the input fields for the Saitek controller under the "Rudder left" and "Rudder right" commands are not selectable. In addition, when I go to the "Wheel brakes Left On/off" or the corresponding "wheel brakes right..." options and open up the input field for the rudder pedals, I am not able to get the game to register my movements of the toe brakes. Is there something I'm missing in assigning buttons within A-10? Side question since we're at it: I want to attach two Cougar MFCDs to a second 22" monitor I have. What is the best software to use to output both MFCD displays to the single monitor? Helios? I've found other posts talking about this issue but I can't seem to find a post which breaks things down for me so that I can get my head around all the different programs and how to configure MFCD output. Thanks for all the help guys. Really appreciate it!
