  1. Hi there!

I´ve just got back into DCS with the fantastic Phantom II and the Cold War map. My system is pretty low end (AMD 5600X, 32 GB RAM, RTX 3070 8GB), but with resonable settings, I manage to get 70-110 fps with good visual results. I use DLSS and clouds set to ultra. And especially during dusk and dawn, the clouds look pretty low res, and are wobbling (moving up and down) when using Track IR. Why is that?

    Thx a lot in advance!

Caveat, untested but this is the general approach for things of this nature:

    1. Open your SteamVR settings. Open Advanced > Developer> and ensure that it is set to be the default OpenXR runtime. Set it on that screen if not.
    2. Make sure your headset is connected and SteamVR is running
    3. Launch DCS in VR, using the new DCS launcher just make sure the little man with the googles is selected by the big orange launch button, vs. the picture of the computer.
    4. Cross fingers and wait for game to start in VR

If not working drop your dcs.log here for a sanity check, it's in your "C:\Users\<your username>\Saved Games\DCS\Logs" directory. If Windows is hiding file extensions then it'll just be a text document named "dcs"

Perfekt. Thanks a ton. I'll definitely give that a go tonight. 😀

An option could be a cheap USB M.2 dongle, and clone the second drive to it, and then replace.
It's also very easy to move DCS, as it's sort of portable. Just move it over to the new drive, and run the repair. This should fix the registry, which I believe is only needed for 3rd part apps. And I noticed something when I last did a repair. It did have check box for shortcuts. Can't remember seeing that one before, hence I've never tried it.
    Cheers!

Wow. That sounds very doable. Never heard of USB M.2 dongles. Definitely going to have a look at that option.

    Thx a ton.

yes not many options here really. but if you trim what you really dont use it might help until next year.. wish I had a better solution for you..

    Thanks a lot.

I was really quite shocked. But I guess we can be very happy, that DCS is patching our sim so actively... The prices of good SSDs are pretty low nowadays. But I have only two M.2 slots on my current mainboard. So upgrading is not that easy...

The good news is that while it needs 200GB to update, it won't actually take that much more space since it will mostly be replacing existing files.  It will definitely grow, just not that much.  It downloads and unpacks the whole thing before it actually starts replacing old files and deleting the update files which is why it may need 200 GB to update.

Yeah, I've noticed that with previous updates. But this time, it definitely wins the record with 200GB... 😀

Do you have any additional drives? If yes, you can with symlinks through Windows trick move the _download folder to another disk.
If not. Install maps. Update, then install maps one by one.
I have every map and module, and my installation is 900+ GB.
    Cheers!

Wow. That's really huge. My install should be half the size I guess.

My other drive in the PC is equally full with racing sims, only 170GB left. So I guess I'll have to uninstall things that I rarely use and give it another go.

Thanks a lot for your help.

  7. Hi there.

I haven't updated my install in 3-4 months (many modules are installed), and yesterday, I wanted to update it to the most recent version. My sim SSD has around 157GB of free space left. But the installer tells me, that it is unable to download the update (almost 200GB) due to insufficient space.

So, what are my options here?

    Thx a lot in advance.

I know, that is a unpopular piece of advise sometimes, but a dedicated 1TB SSD (sata is sufficient) isn't that expensive and a big relieve. Thing with SSDs is, you shouldn't fill them up all the way anyway. It's neither good for speed nor longevity. But I get that it isn't always an option. I'll have a look and let you know.

    Exactly. That's why I'm asking. 🙂

That is tough to answer, because it depends heavily on which modules (and maps!) you have installed exactly. I have all maps and all modules except the Christen Eagle and the Thunder. I can give you an upper boundary tonight when I'm at home.

That would be great. I'm running out of SSD space a bit, hence the question.

I've got all maps installed, and most of the modules (except the cold war era fighters), and a good amount of campaigns.

  10. Hi there!

I'm on a later 2.8 build, and I've got around 2/3 of all modules installed.

Updater says download size is 168GB. How much bigger will the actual install approximately be after the download and install is finished?

it would be cool to have a track and know the characteristics of your PC

It happens during evening (sunset), flying over Cairo, coming in for a landing at Cairo International in the F16C, looking around using Track IR.

My system is rather low end, but runs DCS with stable performance and nice visuals (most of the time):

    AMD 5600X, RTX3070, 32GB 3200MHz RAM, all on Samsung 980 M.2 SSD

I think this is due to cascading shadows, try without them

I have the same issue. Over Cario, especially during dusk and dawn, I get FPS as bad as 20, including some severe stuttering. What are the recommended settings for the shadows?

Thanks in advance for your help! (And yeah, the map is absolutely gorgeous! 😉 )
