  1. There could be a slim chance on a reinstall for some applications but it doesn't make much sense if done correctly. What should be different?

I did that dozens of times with no success what so ever.

    BUT there is something interesting:

A striking difference I noticed however that I would like you guys to check:

are you running the servers on a native bare-metal system or are you running it virtualized on a hypervisor?

    While:

    • I can run it 100% working on a virtualization running on native OS (e.g. VMware Workstation on a "normal" Windows Computer)
    • I can replicate the bug 100% when running it virtualized on a hypervisor (e.g. Proxmox, Xen or similar)

So maybe that is the root cause here to some degree or it's just another bug that has the same symptom?

  2. Windows server is not official supported by ED

    he basically says

Dedicated server has same system requirements as base game

if the issue is on windows 7/8/10 it is a bug

if the issue is on windows server OS it is not a bug as it is not officially supported currently

Thanks for clarification and sorry for the misunderstanding there. I thought so but I had a shimmer of hope...

Ironically this means (again) that right now DCS dedicated server can't be used officially anywhere.

Microsofts terms of use explicitly does NOT allow the use of Windows 7/8/10 as a server software and / or installations on servers (hardware / data center). On top of that all data centers obviously ban the installation of consumer OS on servers for similar reasons.

So basically we are left with a server that:

    A) is illegal to use by Microsofts terms of use and can't be hosted anywhere officially or

    B) a dedicated server that will not be supported by ED because they claim Windows Server is not supported.

I've ran DCS successfully on windows server 2012 and now 2016 on our dedicated. works great, no special tinkering required.

Nice. I did so as well before DCS open beta dedicated server release 2.5.5.31917. Worked perfectly on Windows Server 2019 - since then no support and no joy. It doesn't even create working profile configs even after a fresh server install out of the box since exactly DCS open beta dedicated server release 2.5.5.31917.

  3. Thanks for the response. Sorry to ask though: Could you clarify a bit more for the non native speakers like me?

Where exactly does he state Windows Server (e.g. 2019) is supported?

"I will discuss here ONLY hardware/software described on official site."

"... (Windows Server) doesn't meet system requirements. This is additional feature and it's already added to programmer's task."

My interpretation is that he meant:

    1) The bug is not only related to windows server (which in fact we found out is true, it also appears on Windows 7 and other OS).

    2) Windows Server is still NOT supported thus he will NOT discuss it any further as he will only discuss hardware / software described on the official site, which he linked, which does NOT mention Windows Server is supported.

Just on a sidenote: Windows 7/8/10, although some parts of the code base are shared, is NOT Windows Server 2012/2016/2019

Are we sure that Windows Server is supported? If so, is there any link to the official site which states that Windows Server is supported?

  4. I did say supported :)

Is that just an assumption or official / can you please provide a source for that?

Because I got a totally opposite statement from ED.

    My source: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=242655&page=8

Since then no reply anymore and the store page wasn't edited - so either your source must be steaming hot right from the oven or I'm overlooking something here.

I even offered a remote session to a freshly installed Windows Server 2019 since loads of people suffer from the WebGUI issue right now - they literally don't care.

All I got was "Windows Server is not supported".

  5. I have this exact same problem that also just occurred after installing 2.5.5.31917. I run my DCS server on a Windows 7 machine. The local Web GUI never worked but the remote Web GUI always worked when I logged on using my DCS account on the DCS website. Since then I have uninstalled, reinstalled, repaired, cleaned the dedicated DCS beta server many times and nothing ever allowed me to reconnect via remote web Gui. I have tried the following browsers Edge, chrome, and Firefox...each one reports server not responding.

If you get the exact same issue it is not related to the OS being Windows Server then though. Which is good news and bad news.

Good news being Windows Server is maybe not out of the picture.

Bad news being that the cause of the bug is still unknown.

Is there any news? Most recent release doesn't fix it. Not after update or clean install.

  6. PS Try to add lines

    respect_alt_f4 = true

    net.force_ipv4_lan=true

    to 'Saved Games\%DCSDS%\autoexec.cfg'

Sadly the lines had no effect on the local WebGUI or the remote one. Server not responding. Also the server is opening local TVPV6 and UDPV6 connections.

DS has the same system requirements.

I will discuss here ONLY hardware/software described on official site. Please understand:

    - DS doesn't respond - it's (possible) bug.

    - DS doesn't respond on Win Server is NOT a bug because of your software (Windows Server) doesn't meet system requirements. This is additional feature and it's already added to programmer's task.

    Please don't mix it. Thanks.

Thanks for clarification and for forwarding it to the programmers. Please do keep in mind that we still don't have solid confirmation that it is an incompatibility between Windows Server (2016/2019) and DCS DS.

However, I hope it is clear to everyone involved hosting permanent servers for the community that the Windows 10/8/7 consumer licenses EXPLICITLY FORBID the use as a server in the Terms of Service.

I'm honest here: I didn't even read the requirements properly. It just never occurred to me that anyone would even attempt to host a server on a consumer OS, for security reasons and obviously because it's against the license agreement.

(Windows 10 retail (home/pro/pro for worksstations))

    MICROSOFT SOFTWARE LICENSE TERMS

    WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM

    [...]

By accepting this agreement or using the software, you agree to all of these terms, and consent to the transmission of certain information during activation and during your use of the software as per the privacy statement described in Section 3. If you do not accept and comply with these terms, you may not use the software or its features.

    [...]

    2. Installation and Use Rights.

    [...]

    c. Restrictions. The device manufacturer or installer and Microsoft reserve all rights (such as rights under intellectual property laws) not expressly granted in this agreement. For example, this license does not give you any right to, and you may not:

    [...]

    (v) use the software as server software, for commercial hosting, make the software available for simultaneous use by multiple users over a network, install the software on a server and allow users to access it remotely, or install the software on a device for use only by remote users;

    Windows 10 Terms of Service

    In simple terms:

Installing Windows 10/8/7 on server hardware is against the license. Hence no server hosting companies offer you that option and doing it yourself is illegal.

Using Windows 10/8/7 as a server platform is against the license. Hence no server hosting companies offer you that option and doing it yourself is illegal.

The use of the DCS dedicated server software for ANY configuration other than hosting it temporarily on a Windows 10/8/7 gaming / workstation machine is illegal and violates Microsofts Terms of Service.

Permanently hosted servers would have to be taken down. :(

I highly encourage making sure the dedicated server software does not force users to violate their license agreements with Microsoft. Otherwise we're back to the non WebGUI version until this issue is resolved.

  7.

You linked to the client for which it's 100% understandable but the dedicated server has the same issue:

    https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/world/server_beta/

I assume the system requirements for running dedicated permanently connected to the internet a server were just heavily inspired by the client.

Would be awesome if others can confirm if that is really the root cause for our problem.

It broke on build 2.5.5.31917 so it should be possible to find a workaround and a fix.

IF it is the issue (which is not proven yet imho) I'd add the following:

I'm honestly a bit surprised the dedicated server is not compatible with the server OS by default. This should be the base line for anyone trying to host this. Reconfiguring a normal windows 10 into a safe state is a mess and I doubt many do have a fitting local policy set laying around.

Furthermore you will literally fine no professional hosting company offering you a dedicated server with licensed OS that is windows 10. So we really need a fix if we were to use the dedicated server to improve the DCS multiplayer

  8. The first video is way more realistic. The second one looks like a hollywood movie.

And setting the weather to cloudy doesn't fix that?

Apparently it's not just videos - even just searching for "Normandy Sunny Day" brings up the same material. When I step out during summer the same happens before my eyes.

    https://www.google.com/search?q=normandy+sunny+day&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi4zOiam6zjAhUS-6QKHSTFAfwQ_AUIECgB&biw=2519&bih=1289&dpr=1.5

Could it be relevant to a mild color blindness for some and resulting in a color palette shift that appears different and very unnatural? I once saw a video simulating it and it was an eye opener to me as about every 12th male (8%) suffers from it. https://nei.nih.gov/health/color_blindness/facts_about

  9. One more thing - I was contacted by a nice member of the community and we realized there was one thing we had in common: we are both running the dedicated server on Microsoft Windows Server 2016 / 2019 machines. Neither fresh installs nor the instructions provided by devs could fix it after the release of the DCS open beta dedicated server release 2.5.5.31917

We can, however, BOTH run it "magically" on normal Windows OS, like Windows 10 and 8.1 for example (haven't tested anything older).

Could you guys reading this please post what OS your dedicated server is working on / not working on?

Maybe I've been blind to this from the start since I never assumed that anybody would even attempt at hosting a dedicated server without a Windows Server platform - but it could just be the possibility that makes the most sense here. :helpsmilie:

    Here's my testing so far:

    Windows 8.1 > Working

    Windows 10 > Working

Windows Server 2019 > Not Working

A friendly community member who contacted me:

    Windows 10 > Working

Windows Server 2016 > Not Working

  10. Still can't reproduce here, beta-testers also can't.

I suspect issue is not in browser. Maybe it somewhere in OS or more precisely in windows security options (for example side effect of Parental Control etc etc).

I'm not using parental controls on a Windows Server 2019.

The precise point of failure was specially the update to DCS open beta 2.5.5.31917

Nothing else was changed other than the DCS release. I have a hard time seeing a connection unless it's a base incompatibility of DCS with the OS itself.

Also why is the recovery process failing? The serverSettings.lua is created on fresh install but faulty.

With your described method it's not created at all and the options look faulty. Is that really an expected behavior? In case it's not (which I hope since it differs extremely from the behavior in the past) can you really not reproduce it?

Over the forums I count numerous people having the same issue - in case it's needed I will go through the threads and count.

Considering there's only just above 400 servers I'd say that's a considerable amount of at least 5% at which we'd cancel a rollout at work already.

Furthermore none of the recovery procedures you described are working - even a fresh install doesn't help.

Meanwhile, even basic things broke in the server like the -norender option.

Pages back I asked if there is any other procedures you want us to test. Is there anything we can provide you with? Remote access, system logs, testing procedures that are worked out by your Q&A team which it runs the software through before release?

Could you describe in basic detail what components need to be in the green for the WebGUI to work?

Feel free to contact me in case you want to test it in a remote session.

PS: could you elaborate on what you mean by:

    Still can't reproduce here, beta-testers also can't.

I'm using DCS World 2.5 Open Beta Dedicated Server - I am not aware of a dedicated server realease that is not beta.

Hence I'm unsure to what beta-testers you are referring too - are we supposed to install a non-beta dedicated server?

As mentioned above I can only find the dedicated server on the English site - the German version (and others) don't have it at all.

    EDIT

Could it be localization specific? Is there anyone having this issue on a 100% EN locale server?

Also added a TCPView - maybe it helps.

  11. Ok, let's start from scratch. So, you can't connect via local web-gui launched from decktop icon to the started dedicated server (web-gui can't recognize working server):

    1. Clean DCS server installation. There is not necessary to uninstall and download-install again - just make 'cleanup' then 'repair'. Exactly cleanup then repair, not vice versa.

    2. No any mods. Note: LoTATC, TacView etc. are mods despite they do not changes DCS binary files. I can remember at least 2 cases when some of these mods crashes DCS. Again - no any mods including mods is Saved Games.

    3. No any antiviruses, defenders etc. Disable them temporary.

    4. Browser type

    5. dcs.log, options.lua, serverSettings.lua, autoexec.cfg (if exists)

    6. Are there any errors in browser log (F12 in Chrome) when you try to connect?

    ADDED

    7. Disable all browser extentions.

Any update on astazous report and mine?

I re-did the whole procedure again today since there were patches and hotfixes. No change.

I noticed something else though, since that cross site scripting error is a dead end. Just a warning on the local gui after all.

    1. The server starts in big resolution (1280x768 on mine)

    2. it seems to have an unoptimized options file

    3. it does not create a serverSettings.lua anymore

    As for the pointers:

    1. Clean DCS server installation. There is not necessary to uninstall and download-install again - just make 'cleanup' then 'repair'. Exactly cleanup then repair, not vice versa.
      Did cleanup, then repair.

Wiped the whole save games folder to make sure no mods are active. Game directory wasn't touched either.

    3. No any antiviruses, defenders etc. Disable them temporary.
      None used
    4. Browser type
Used Firefox in this case - tried all the others as well though (see prior post). No change
    5. dcs.log, options.lua, serverSettings.lua, autoexec.cfg (if exists)
Added the whole saved games folder it created as a zip file in attachments: https://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=213306&stc=1&d=1562445324
    6. Are there any errors in browser log (F12 in Chrome) when you try to connect? ADDED
Not online. Locally yes, see screenshot 9 bugged

  12. Here is a good vid showing what Normandy looks like. Yeah, it is a bit high contrast, but it gives good reference for fields, patterns of vegetation, and the colours. I big thing that needs sorting for Normandy is the trees, that are now as bright or brighter than the surrounding grass fields. I wish UM the best of luck with their work. I wish it had come a long time ago, but that they turned around is still a hell of a lot better than nothing.

The video is with a cloud layer.

This one has a bit more variety

  13. Yes, I read it. You forgot to disable 3rd party mods.

Please understand me. It can be DCS bug, also it can be user bug. Note: many servers successfully worked in dedicated mode, I have no reports from beta-testers. So, based on given information I can't say more. We still trying to reproduce.

Doing my best to understand but this is not the kind of reply I expected when I asked if you read my posts. Quoting myself here

made sure no mods / addons were present, tried to run with clean saved games configs, without mission files,

To make things short: I tried everything to make this as vanilla as I can get for the install. Nothing was altered whatsoever - it still came up with the "server not responding" (even locally) right after the vanilla re-install.

By the way, the only mods that were ever used are Tacview and LotAtc. Both are simple copy & paste into ...saved games/"dcs-instance" mods - no core files are altered.

The only reason why I re-applied the mods later (last thursday) was to fly our mission on saturday (loading manually using the config files).

I also offered accessing the server in a session so you can scout around and see if there is anything amiss that shouldn't be there after a vanilla install using https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/world/server_beta/ .

If you like we can do a full install of DCS from scratch again.

I can also send you a zipped copy of the saved games if you want to look around in the files.

We all want this bug to be fixed - there's numerous posts all over the forums. Let's try to work together here. There must be a condition for this to happen.

    Is there anything you need?

Any other procedure or testing done, more detailed description of something, log(s) or file(s), a backup from saved games?

  14. Many, many thanks for your personal opinion.

For people who want to really solve issue:

    'Local web-GUI doesn't work' = 1 bit (one bit!) information, isn't it?

So, for reproducing and repair we have to know details. FAQ says which basic details we need, additional information can be asked in separate threads.

    Which browser do you use?

Without wanting to sound rude - did you look at my posts? I stated numerous times that I'd like to know what else we could provide since the FAQ you quoted is aimed at fixing DCS client errors not dedicated server issues.

I filled out that very template and this post was left ignored. Also I clearly stated that it was working before the update - was there anything changed that's related to browser compatibility so it would be worthwhile to follow that route any further? The changelog that was posted did not point towards such a thing and I'm sure the QA team would've tested at least the commonly used browsers right?

Just to give details of my browser situation:

    Opera GX LVL1 (core: 60.0.3255.50747)

    IE 11 version 11.0.9600.19356

    Chrome version 75.0.3770.90

    Opera version:60.0.3255.135

    Firefox version: 67.0.2

    Firefox nightly release: 2019-06-14-10-00-22

    Vivaldi version: 2.6.1566.31

+ some others, including mobile, also tried different WAN networks and more. Can post all of them if required but as stated it worked before so I am 100% certain it's not a browser related issue.

It does affect both normal and -w servers.

The bug does not affect all users / servers.

    Screenshots were provided

    dcs.log was provided

    Template was filled out

It was working before the update

In terms of troubleshooting I looked at the firewall, checked the ports, checked the routing, made sure no mods / addons were present, tried to run with clean saved games configs, without mission files, tried the local WebGUI, checked if any MS KB's were installed prior to the issue that could have affected this, lastly also tried re-install and other stuff I probably forgot

What's left is what else could we provide to get this bug looked at?

As I stated numerous times I'd gladly provide any other logs you need.

I'd also provide the opportunity of having a remote session and looking at the server with DCS staff if required.

Feel free to contact me here or directly if you need anything or if I can provide you with any more data.

  15. Thank you Madfish!

You basically gave the response to this thread that I wanted to give but was too lazy :P

Could you please tell me if a clean install worked out for you?

    Sadly no.

    • Uninstalled DCS Openbeta server
    • Wiped saved games
    • Downloaded the newest DCS Openbeta server installer and used that to install
    • Started it, providing the credentials
    • Local Web GUI doesn't recognize the server at all
    • ED Web GUI does, clicking on it brings you to "Server not responding"
    • Copying an old running backup of the saved games profile over it (with mission and all) runs the server, ED Web GUI picks it up (name, slots etc.) but clicking on it brings you to "Server not responding. The local Web GUI again doesn't recognize the server.

  16. Thanks for the help pointing to the template on how to report DCS client bugs.

    • Screenshots and logs have already been provided.
    • This is the correct forum section
    • One bug per thread means this thread had to be used
    • I asked if there are any special logs aside that would be helpful since we're talking about the dedicated server here but from your response I assume you don't need anything else than the dcs.log

To comply with formalities here's the template:

    1. What happened that resulted in the issue?
I updated the dedicated server using the ED updater.

    2. What were you doing that caused, or seemed to cause the issue?
I updated the dedicated server using the ED updater.

    3. Could you reproduce it? Bugs should be reproducible, you should be able to have it happen to you again before reporting it.
Avoided installing the most recent release to provide a better insight to the current situation. Since it's not a known issue I expect that installing clean again will not produce the behavior.

    4. What module where are you using, and does it happen with others?
      none

Also the "Also, must include" list (the list in the template should be continued from # 4 if it's required):

    1. A Track: We would prefer a short one that shows the bug right away, if your track is very long, try to reproduce a short one showing the bug
webUI bug preventing from loading a mission
    2. A screenshot: In some cases, a screenshot is enough, most times the devs prefer a track so they can watch and jump in or run on their debug version though
screenshots were provided, track not available
    3. System specs: dxdiag file is perfect for this see here for steps to do so
webui bug for a dedicated server but attached because this is required
    4. DCS World logs: Logs can be found in the DCS folder in Saved Games in a folder called Logs. Please zip these and attach to your report post. DCS World also will collect and pack the needed files when the game crashes, you can send this, and it will include everything we need.
      attached

Since no progress was made I'll do a clean install to get it working again. Thanks for the help so far.

    dcs.zip

  17. with faster net code you should see the server working harder.

the test is, are the clients seeing better performance?

Hi, the answer to this is no. My ping is around the same it was before.

Also the CPU load is generally higher, even if there are no clients connected. If the netcode got any "better" this shouldn't bog down the CPU if no clients are connected.

"Better" netcode could literally mean a ton of things. For example less load and better performance, less warping and better look ahead, reduced bandwidth requirements, better cheat protection and many other things.

The devs must have tested the server. Either it's only specific configurations that are affected (in which case they should try to find out the cause) or it's all of them and there is a solid explanation (in which case they should give it to us)

On a 3,3ghz Xeon root server I'm seeing loads of 10-15% per DCS instance, even in an empty map without any clients connected!

So there is still room on the CPU - it's just that it was about 0-2% before and it makes you wonder what it suddenly does - mining bitcoins, doing thermodynamic simulations for better flight models or what is it doing? :D

  18. Can't reproduce, please give more details

Would gladly provide any details you need. The golden question is: What kind of details do you need?

Any logs specifically that come to your mind that would help? I will pull and upload them.

Will leave the servers running til wednesday - after that I will need to re-install them because they are currently unusable for running custom missions.

  19. Same here on 3 servers on one machine

They are running with the -w argument

    Windows Server 2019

Firewall rules are good - disabled it for testing but no effect

Each server has the config/autoexec.cfg in place with webgui ports webgui_port = 8088

    webgui_port = 8089

    webgui_port = 8090

It was working brilliantly until the latest open beta patch.

Could anyone else confirm if you are running -w instances or does this appear on a normal dedicated single instance as well?
