General gaming. Trying to figure out some sims.
  1. Thanks for the responses and repped! It is correct that I want both screens displaying game generated info - one for cockpit and one for mfcd's. If I were to use the ipad solutions mentioned on this board to show the mfcd's does this create extra challenges for the video card or is the processing load offloaded onto the ipad? Also, was anyone sure about my last question - Can the second screen be used to show bomb or missile follow view?
  2. I have followed the directions in the forums for placing my mfcd's on my second monitor. However my fps drops from around 60 to a slideshow. I have the mfcd's set to the lowest resolution in the options menu but still very little improvement. Obviously dual screen gaming requires more horsepower but I didn't expect quite this amount of impact. I have an i7 920 overclocked to 3.7, 6 gigs of ram and sli gtx 460s with 768 mb of ram. My main screen is 1920x1200 and my second is 1680-1050. So you can imagine my questions: What might be bottlenecking my system? What software might I run to see what part is the weak link? I am thinking the video ram is to little but don't know how to check how much warthog is using. Does having the mfcd's on the second monitor tax the system more than showing dual cockpit views? A somewhat related question - can I put a view on the second monitor like the chase camera or missile camera? Darn it would be so cool if I could keep the cockpit view at the same time as following the Maverick or bombs!
  3. Does it ever make sense to use the Maverick camera to find targets? If I have to move the Maverick camera at all it loses lock and the camera moves so fast I have to go back to the TGP. So if TMS Forward Short won't lock on should I return to TGP and zoom in a little more, then try the lock again?
  4. Was that 4 gig or 4 Mb of RAM? Did any of your flight sims come on multiple discs? I remember some games like King's Quest in the 80s had 12 to 14 floppies.
  5. I also find the shake too distracting. OP - Enjoy the game! I've had it for months and still can't finish a campaign!
  6. Thanks for the comments! I'll try them first chance I get. Since I am new to the terminology I know it might not be clear what my problem is. To say it another way - In the training mission, I can get the Maverick locked to the airfield waypoint shown on the TAD but I cant scan the airfield for the tanks or whatever the enemy vehicles I should be targeting with the Maverick because as soon as I start slewing, the Maverick camera breaks lock and moves at the same speed as the aircraft. Don't know how everybody gets it to lock onto a tank.
  7. I know this should be easy but when I have the general target area successfully selected as the sensor point of interest I am unable to fine tune the Maverick using the slew controls. More specifically, as soon as I start slewing the Maverick the camera immediately starts moving as fast as my A-10. This is happening during the Maverick training mission where your waypoint is the airstrip and you make the waypoint your SPI. That goes fine but then when starting to slew to the target it just releases the camera lock and I have to select the SPI again and this cycle keeps repeating. :helpsmilie: General comment to the developers and testers - Thanks for this GREAT simulation. I have spent the last couple months reading the manuals (still not done as I forget it as fast as I read it) and it is SO overwhelming at first that I almost gave up several times. But now that I have some of the very basics down such as my X52 Hotas controls, TMS, DMS, Coolie and other crazy functions on the MFCD I feel like I accomplished something with every flight. For example, I was flying too low when I dropped a bomb and the explosion ripped through parts of my a10 and started a fire. I quickly pulled the correct lever and applied the fire extinguisher. So proud of myself, until I realized I actually pushed the jettison button and the resulting explosion blew my wings off. I laughed so hard when one of my friends said Mass Effect has a steep learning curve!
  8. By the way, the advice to turn off the game mode did enable my joystick so thanks for that EB!
  9. Thanks! I do think the training is helpful but it also throws a lot at you. One wrong button press and it can throw the training mission off and make it impossible to get back on track and continue. I am also having a very tough time deciding what is the best profile to have on my x52 pro. Most of the ones I have taken off this site end up leaving several of the axis and buttons empty which seems like a waste. Pressing one or two modifiers plus a keyboard button is so distracting that I want to limit it as much as possible. I also hear that a Track IR is a great purchase and I would get one immediately but want to prove to myself that I am going to stick through the learning curve before investing more money. I think I need to step back and approach each piece slowly. Maybe review something like the Mavericks in the manual and the wiki and then take the Maverick training to get the most out of it. I can already forsee that some of the best part of a study sim are the unexpected events. For example I finally released a GBU and took out an enemy but I was too low and my tail caught on fire from the blast! As if that wasn't bad enough I pulled the correct fire bars and was just about to pat myself on the back for knowing how to release the fire extinguishers when I realized I had instead jettisoned my fuel which then blew up my plane. Now maybe it was just a coincidence but if this sim is realistic enough to start my jettisoned fuel on fire I am impressed!
  10. I have Game mode ON. I'll turn it off and see if that fixes it. Thanks!
  11. Are we not supposed to be able to use our joystick in the training tutorials? I can only use the keyboard commands. The joystick works ok in the free flight. New to flight sims and must say this one is kicking my @ss! I can't even get through the training without messing up something and having to start over! I have been scouring the links to various faqs and other training materials but it sure would help if I could find a good profile for my x52 pro that has all the basics on my hotas.
