  1. And the radar... seems to return ground clutter noise even at altitude which is strange. If I point a laser at a mirror, the laser point only hits me in the face if I'm 90 degrees in front... So I'm not really sure why the ground clutter returns such high values at a <= 45 degree angle. I'd understand if the terrain was rugged, with a lot of hills and I was flying quite low. It'd be returning a bit more noise... but this particular radar seems to return more noise than anything else. ps: ... However it even returns this ground clutter return when I've set it to +1.5 degrees... which means the antenna isn't even pointed at the ground... It just makes no sense to me.
  2. - - - - - DCS: MiG 21BIS - Make the most out of the ASP Optical Sight and Sapphire Radar A video tutorial showing how easy it would be to aim the Gsh-23 gun if the ASP used the Sapphire to get precise range to target rather than "fixing" it at .3km - - - - - It would appear "300m" is the minimum firing distance, not maximum --i.e. you shouldn't be engaging targets below that distance so I am not sure why the ASP auto-gyro function is 'locked' at 300 meters. Also, the ASP system should not jump when switching from 'auto' to 'manual'. So if you're tracking an air target in 'auto' and have radar lock on the target or fixed-beam pointed at it, the range slider should move and the angular correction knob should move as necessary and when you point the nose up to fire the cannon at the aircraft and lose radar lock, the distance and other settings shouldn't jump. This makes perfect sense to me. Also they shouldn't 'reset' when you switch back to manual, the distance and angular correction settings should 'remember' their position. This would aid in using the cannon and I don't believe the Russian designers would have the thing 'locked' to the minimum safe firing distance. "Here you can see the ammunition being loaded. The aircraft's [su-25] now being fitted out with ammo. The gun fires over 2,000 rounds per minute. It can fire from a range of 300m to 2km. The minimum distance is set to avoid [getting hit by] its own debris. 300m is the MINIMUM firing range." Also of note, the radar doesn't seem very good at picking out A-10s. Even with the 'LST' filter engaged. Considering their extra wingspan and all that... It's almost as if the radar were 'tweaked' to not pick 'em up. I agree for small targets near the ground like attack helicopters this'd be a great tweak to stop newbs just targeting Ka-50s near the ground, flying near trees, from 100 miles away... but the A-10 pilots don't really need that kind of help. They have RWR, chaff etc. The Ka-50 has nothing.
  3. http://fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/row/mig-21.htm MiG-21 FISHBED Sensors MIG-21pfs = Spin Scan (R1L) radar, RWR, Balistic bombsight MIG-21bis = Jay Bird radar, RWR, Balistic bombsight J-7 = Type 222 ranging radar, RWR, Ballistic bombsight You notice they mention 'RWR' and a 'Ballistic bombsight' but no radar altimeter even though it has... so methinks maybe it does have a gun-range radar like the F-86? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Mikoyan-Gurevich_MiG-21_variants MiG-21F-13 (1960; Izdeliye 74; NATO "Fishbed-C") Short-range day fighter; the MiG-21F-13 was the first MiG-21 model to be produced in large numbers. The F-13 had further upgrades: an improved ASP-5ND optical gunsight and an upgraded SRD-5ND ranging radar. The MiG-21F-13 was also built under licence in China as the Chengdu J-7 or F-7 for export. - - - - - "an improved ASP-5ND optical gunsight and an upgraded SRD-5ND ranging radar" It almost sounds like they were made for each other ;-)
  4. I was trying to figure out the whole ASP system. :-P I've recently updated DCS: World to version 1.2.10.32582 and now when CU15 is set to 'auto' it doesn't change the angular correction dial. It used to. From MiG-17 wiki: "Soviet engineers obtained a captured F-86 Sabre from Korea and they copied the optical gunsight and SRD-3 gun ranging radar to produce the ASP-4N gunsight and SRC-3 radar." So the ASP should be effective at Air-to-Air ? I'm having some real issues with it, for one it doesn't seem to work very well. You input target size and have to be right on top of the target to be able to use it. <400m Does the MiG-21 have a range radar like the MiG-17 for use with the ASP? 'cos the Sapphire radar doesn't track below -1.5 degrees which makes it kind of useless when pointing the gun/nose ahead of the target. I mean it has Altitude radar, why not a range-radar also?
  5. I have exactly the same issue. Hope it's fixed with the latest update. :-) Video: _________ PS: Wolf Rider: "the .lua editor of choice should be Notepad++" I am going to learn .lua just so I can make some awesome missions for MiG-21bis. The current 'fictional' setup is kindof strange. You're in Russia, flying a Russian aircraft but you're not Russian.
  6. I noticed that when I click the radar filter buttons (CM45-52) that they behave differently than if I use a keyboard button. (I've bound LALT+1, LALT+2, LALT+3, LALT+4, LALT+Q, LALT+W, LALT+E, LALT+R to CM45-52 respectively)) Video:
  7. Some of the graphics I posted ages ago, recycled and taped into the Kneeboard. ;) 'On De Fence' pinup girl. WW2 stamps (x2). I realized after making this that the Kneeboard images when rendered are slightly squished. To make them appear with the correct ratio in-cockpit: In the image editing software, after loading the layer to the relevant size to put on the template you must reduce its height to 90%-original (Not resize the 'template', just the layer with the image and make sure not to change its width.) This will correct the aspect when it renders in the cockpit. _____________________________________________ Tutorial: How to create special Kneeboard pages for certain aircraft http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=129400 KNEEBOARD BUILDER http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=2159546&postcount=1
  8. I saw a statement by the Russian Defence Ministry and they mentioned the R-60 and they said it has a guaranteed hit zone when you're within 5km and a max range of 12km... The game seems to divide the 12 by 10 to get a 1.2km distance for it? o.O
  9. I had problems with flashing textures in BS2, I posted a fix here.
  10. Hi JCook, thought you might appreciate this post: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=30628134&postcount=12 :P Just a thing that allows you to turn down the volume of the alarms, permanently. Totally optional. Ignore if not interested :>
  11. I had a problem with graphics glitches (flashing textures) on BS2 and it was annoying as hell... I found that changing the frame rendering option in the Nvidia SLI options fixed it. I've been reading this thread, and everyone I've seen posting about this problem has Intel Chipset and AMD cards... coincidence ? Youtube vid: Makes me wonder if I'd have had that problem if my chipset was Nvidia and not AMD, or if you guys'd not have this issue if you had AMD Chipsets to match your AMD cards. %)
  12.
  13. Awesome ! :> I like it a lot. I hope that ED make it so that rather than have to modify the entire "skin" texture, they have dedicated 'sections' where decals can be added easily. Nose, side of cockpit, kill tags etc, pilot name, serial no., etc. They could then have "dedicated" masks that the game loads, so that the bumb maps and all that from rivets and other texture markings will still show through. <base texture> [<%user%-decal_1> <default mask_1>] [<%user%-decal_2> <default mask_2>] End result, A-10 with decals and all rivets and other details showing. And the server could synchronise all the custom user decals... it'd take seconds if every user had an array of them all cached locally. :< I can hope. It'd be awesome.
  14. "Thar She Blows" 1942 This will be probably the last "pin-up" I upload. Kind of lost my enthusiasm after all the moaning about "copyright" and what-not. It takes quite a lot of work to go from to -> you'd nearly need a degree in image forensics to find the detail in all that pixel noise. :P Anyway, "Thar She Blows" 1942.
  15. A Legend's Nose Art This artwork I re-created in Illustrator, every single curve and line is hand clicked with a mouse... so I'm hoping that the 'issue' of copyright will not rear it's ugly head. If there isn't any issue with using this recreation, I give full permission for MY work to be used in any way shape or form on any DCS Game and Xplane... If anyone even tries and use this work for anything else ? Click the "Show" button. Vector-01_3_B&W.pdf Petie_2nd.pdf Vector-01__v2.pdf Side_1b.pdf
  16. I hope that ED will make it so that the decals can be added as separate textures "over" the normal aircraft game textures in multiplayer... this wouldn't overload any servers as the decals can be quite small, <512KB. It'd be straightforward to program, and it'd allow Clans and other groups to be able to play online and for others to recognise the squadrons based on markings / decals. I can hope anyway.
  17. Hi, I am uploading some of the pin-up girls. Masked the background out and beautified in Photoshop. I've found a bunch of web-sites with high-res images available :P but it takes time to make 'em look pretty. xD If you are interested, feel free to have a look. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=89086
  18. Good to know ;) The art on the aircraft were inspired by the pin-up girls of the time, and maybe some celebrities / fantasies. Same as nowadays xD One of the main artists was a guy called Gil Elvgren (1914-1980)
  19. I hope so, because it's a lot of work to go from the "Decal_3_preview.JPG" to the "Decal_3.png" "Preview" - Decal_3_preview.JPG - 400x400 - 94KB "Tail Wind" - Decal_3.PNG - 1000x2000 - 1.06 MB by Gil Elvgren
  20. Small decal 300x900. It's smaller but I think it's cool so I removed most of the noise (half-tone lines, pixels etc.)
  21. Thanks -Rudel-, speckfire. In the mean-time, here's some 'stamps' from a book and thought they'd be worth uploading.. though I don't know if they're of any use to anybody.
  22. I plan to download some WW2 decals and pin-ups (the types put on WW2 fighters). May be useful to anyone interested in customizing their P-51 skin. Will be beautifying and tweaking in Photoshop (cut out / colour / etc.) Dunno how much interest there is in this type of thing. Post a quick message if you want me to continue or if you have any constructive input. :) All transparent backgrounds (PNG) #1 Decal 01 - 800x2000px - 0.8MB (Attached) #2 Decal 02 - 300x900px - 0.2MB #3 "Tail Wind" - 1000x2000px - 1.06 MB #4 "Thar She Blows" - 1180x2000 - 1.64 MB ______________________________________________________________________ #5 Nose Art from the plane of legendary P-51 pilot, John C. Meyer. I plan to create all the decals for John C. Meyer's "Petie 2nd" P-51. I'll see about attaching them to the same post, linked above. ver2: 2000x1836 - 0.4MB + PDF attached to post. This version has more authentic colors. P51:1127x250 - 30 KB + PDF attached to post. Side 1:630x250 - 7 KB + PDF attached to post. Here's a book which has a few pictures like the ones I uploaded. http://www.amazon.com/For-Boys-Racy-Pin-Ups-World/dp/1888054395/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1337826735&sr=8-1
  23. Thank you for that clarification Nate, much appreciated. :> I'll just keep an eye out for updates and modules then.
  24. Hi, first time opening DCS World. I see Ka-50 and A-10C icons but they have little dollar signs next to them and I can't fly them ? Am I missing something obvious. I checked the options, I was looking through the Forum... I have A-10C and BS1 on Steam and I think the BS2 Upgrade. :<
