@Kuky :
3Ds max 9 commercial is around 3500 USD
However, If you are a student, 3Ds max 9 is only 250 USD :smartass: but the EULA is only cleared for educational / nonprofit use. (Which should be fine for hobbyists)
When it comes to trying it or learning : There is a free 30 day trial of 3ds max 7 : http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/3D-Studio-Max-Download-15976.html
You can then purchase a licence (full or student) and activate it.
Another option is to use Blender (free and very good)
http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/
You will just have more possible problems with porting the models to lockon since you will have to go through 3Ds max anyway.
And when you need to export to LOM, ask someone who has 3Ds max, or use the one at your job, or install the free trial when you need to export to LOM. The last is twisting licenses a bit and I don't encourage it.
For the textures, I recommend the gimp (free but awkward to use) or Corel paintshop pro (55 USD) over the expensive photoshop (600 USD).
Gimp: http://www.gimp.org/
So if you are broke, you can have a 3D suite with texturing tools for free, open source, no ads, no catch, no spyware (blender + gimp) but you will still need access to 3Ds max (for exporting)
