  1. Something wrong with the gunsight? From what I get so far, the pilot is supposed to hold the caging button, move the crosshair circle onto a target and it will "snap" on it, predicting where to shoot. I tested on a few targets and I only once got a lock but that was after the target came within 400m but if I can get this close to a plane I dont need a target lock anymore to hit it. Is that a bug or intended? On any range after 400m the radar lamp flashes and the crosshair jitters.
  2. Having serious problems in the following situations: 1. Going from forward flight into hover. 2. Taking off cleanly. I can easily do what I want to with the huey, hover on the spot, quickly decelerate into a hover, avoid VRS. However with the Mi8, the rotor torque gets in the way so much I can not handle it. One problem might be that I am using my joystick twist to control rudder. Which works great in the huey because the torque goes counter-clock-wise. But the Mi8 rotates in clock-wise which is much harder to precisely counter with a twist. Is there anything I can do with settings or flying to manage torque? It is very easy to counter VRS in the huey but if I attempt it with mi8 the following happens: I increase collective slightly to avoid descending too fast, but as soon as I change it the delicate balance I am barely keeping to hover steady is gone because the heli starts turning CCW. I am not so much scared of the VRS itself but the instant torque messing up the balance even at slight collective changes. Even on take off I sometimes just drift off to the left (not rotating, the heli literally slides away to the left while still being steady on all axis).
  3. whoopsie, thanks that fixed it
  4. I think the controls for my mi8 and p51 are broken. It started when I tried to paste my input files from the 1.2.7 beta into the full 1.2.8 version. Almost no keyboard input works, not even pressing escape to get into the menu. I have tried fixing it by deleting my complete folders for these 2 aircraft in the mods folder and veriyfing the steam cache to get the default data. However surprisingly after booting the game again, the old controls are still intact. How do I reset the control setup for these 2 aircraft without reinstalling the whole DCS game? And how does the game still retrive the control settings after I delete them?
  5. I think there is an issue with my Thrustmaster TFlight Hotas X. I switched to the beta 1.28 4 weeks ago and played it for a bit. Then stopped playing for 2 weeks and unplugged the stick. Then I plugged it in again after 2 weeks and I was not able to take off straight with my huey, and I was sure it was not me being bad at it. So I looked at the control indicator and something weird shows: When moving the cycling and stopping, the stick appears to oscillate for a brief time around the stop point. Happens on both the huey and mi8. It is far less noticable on the mi8 with the same settings. Is my stick broken or did I mess up some setting? btw that issue appeared on beta 128, retail 128 and even 127.
  6. The mouse freelook in cockpit feels awfully restricted in the A10c. I own the huey and ka50 and in there you can easily rotate the view to see each button from an angle that allows to read the labels. However in the A10c, it is not possible to lean back in the chair to read the switch labels. Is there special command to lean back and lean to the side?
  7. How to setup the game and mission options so the game becomes hardcore realistic in terms of recon and tactical information? What I would like is to have the game preconfigured so that when I play an autogenerated mission, I would have the same tactical information that a real pilot would have. So far I have this: 1. Turning off labels in options removes the labels in the 3d screen. 2. When starting an autogenerated mission, or any I made myself, the enemy units show as UNI XX with a blue circle around them, whichI assume is radar coverage. Is that information gameplay or something a real pilot would have? 3. What settings should I adjust so the f10 map only shows "realistic" information about enemy locations. (I plan to go f10 map completely off, once I figure the abris stuff out)
  8. I think there is a bug with the cyclic. When the mission starts, the control indicators show all centered on the hud item. but when I move the cyclic, it instantly jumps 25% left and down and remains centered on that. I have not changed any of the trim options, and this happens for both the huey and the KA50. Persists after a game and pc restart. Started last night out of nowhere. The stick in question is a thrustmaster t.flight hotas x.
  9. What is the large KH ML24 missile for? I was able to hit a ground target on around 9+km with it and it does appear to be a bit overkill considering you can carry 12 vikhrs with slightly less range which kill most ground targets. Wikipedia says it has 11km range. I assume it being a much larger missile it is used against ships?
  10. About quick target acquisition: From the weapons on board the ka50 and the way they are employed, the ka50 is more of a "ninjacopter" (it is called that way in wargame airland battle), as in, you sneak up on targets, shoot some vikhr and flee. I was in this scenario at some point: Flying over a town looking for targets. Overlooked several vehicles within 2km and they opened fire on me. What is the best course of action? 1. Flee out of range, then turn, and attack with maximum range weaponry 2. Lock cannon, rockets to front and strafe them 3. Get a quick lock with the helmet sight and open fire Any option that needs a precise target lock feels not really possible if I am flying a quick turn, dodging aa fire from targets that are close. So am I doing something wrong if I cant return fire quickly while being shot at or is it just the way it is with the ka50? Note I do not have TRACKIR and mapping the mouse to targeting and firing keys does not seem to work.
  11. Why cant I map any mouse buttons?
  12. I tried joining it but it shows "connection interrupted". I am running the latest DCS version
  13. Looking for people to fly with, I own the ka50 and huey modules so far, so I would prefer flying with other helicopter pilots. Please respond in this topic if you are looking for fellow heli pilots to fly with. (I am not looking to join a clan, just casually meeting to fly)
  14. By recenter you mean having to let go of the stick? The manual mentions that. Also do I ever need to reset the trim? And is there an indicator like the huey has that shows the cyclic and rudder on the hud? I cant find it in the KA50 control options. ------------------------------- Targeting questions I was learning how to use the VIKHR ATGM. So far I learned there is 2 ways to acquire targets, using the helmet sight and manually moving the tv camera around. The helmet system is not that comfortable without using TRACKIR, and it does not seem that precise on targets that are far away. So what is the best way to acquire targets that are 6+km away? 1. Manually move tv camera and lock 2. Use helmet sight to quickly get roughly near it then adjust the camera manually? I ran into this problem, when using auto turn to target, it does work as intended when pressing uncage/aquire using the helmet, as the heli quickly tries to turn towards it. However when using manual tv camera locking or moving the camera around it softly rotates after the target reticle, but it never seems to get it "exactly". It centers itself slightly away so I have to very carefully use the rudder to get just on target, then either hold it, or press trim and pray it stays on it if I let go of the stick. Here is a screenshot of this I think this is off center as the single shot setting on the vikhr alternates left/right. Is that causing it to be not "quite" on target? I swear when I switched to 2 shot salvo setting it was ready to fire but I may imagine things. So is that bug in the game, something as intended on the real ka50 or am I doing this wrong? Another issue might be that I expected modern attack helis to simply pop up behind a tree line, instantly lock on to anything metal/vehicle and the pilot just fires off an ATGM. Is that a movie cliche I am falling for? The manual explains ATGM launches on page 11-16: What is "automatic" about the targeting? I manually have to move the camera around, lock on, then finely adjust the helicopter heading before firing, which leaves me floating in the air like AA bait for at least half a minute. And how does one quickly attack several targets with the machine cannon? Assuming I want to fly over the area, destroy 4 trucks without hovering around. Manually moving the shkval and locking on targets is near impossible because of the small angle of the cannon and or targets simply being out of range of the camera. I could use the gun forward fixed, but then what is the poing of having the automatic tracking? (Is there a way to lock the gun in a specific angle without tracking a ground target? For example lock it slightly to the right and down so that it can be used like a fixed door gun of sorts) And last, what is the shkval scanning for? All it did was move left and right, I expected it to lock onto something on its own.
  15. So I was playing a bit with the autopilot and it appears using trimmers to steer then let go to let the auto pilot hold is the correct way to fly. Also the director switch on is a bit more comfortable for me because the autopilot does not get in the way so much. But I wonder is that the real way to fly a KA50? being on autopilot all the time? Coming from playing the huey everything feels so smoothed out and packed into safety wrappings. I want to go back to my huey and hug it. Mind, I never flew a real helicopter and the DCS huey was my first real simulation level heli so I am not sure how it translates in real life, but I noticed this: The huey appears to tell you far better when something is wrong. When you enter forward flight, you get that soothing rattling telling you that it is entering forward flight. When you start to vortex, it shakes violently. When it nose dives too hard and you go 140 knots it rattles. When I want to use the rudder in a high speed forward flight, I can feel the air passing my heli keeping it on track. When It takes off you can feel that smooth fat air below it pushing against the ground. Also does the huey really need trimming? From my experience, the faster it flies, the more it keeps its attitude even if I let go of the stick. Example, when flying a high speed turn with banking it can basically keep flying in a circle with letting go of the stick. However in the KA50: -> I fly with avearge speed. It was 250+ knots, but you cant tell that at a certain height and the helicopter does not shake violently. And this stupid IAS lamp is blinking, but I ignore it, because warning lamps are for losers. Then there is a really awful sound of rotor blades snapping. Looking outside it appears the 2 rotor discs intersected and cut each other by 50%. I think it is because of being used flying the huey, that thing keeps the banking when you fly a turn even if you let go of the stick. Basically the faster a huey flies, the more inertious it is and remains in what ever attitude it was.
  16. Thanks for the answers so far. About the cyclic, I found out the y axis saturation can decompress the range of motion for the stick, means if I increase that a lot, I lose movement range but it allows for more precise control. I was playing around with the autopilot and I am confused about how it works with the trim. From what I get so far, the autpilot buttons are supposed to lock the heli in a desired attitude, but do i need to press the trim for that to kick in? Never used trim on the huey so I dont even have that mapped. And what is the function of the furthermost right autopilot button? It is called autpilot director control, but pressing it on or off did not have any noticable effect. Also the manual mentions the Hover ON/OFF and pressing that (supposedly on the cyclic stick) did not have an effect either. Summarizing my above questions by numbers: 1. What is the autopilot director control button supposed to do? 2. What does the cyclic hover on/off do? 3. Do the autopilot settings need the trim to have effect? 4. Is is possible to switch (per hotkey) the coolie hat to be either mouse look or tv camera? I think it is but I have not been able to set that up 5. If all the autopilot stuff is kicking in, does that mean it will keep all the desired attitude angles on the helicopter when I let go of the stick? I have much better control over the helicopter (huey) with a lower range of motion, the whole range being compressed with a lower X-axi saturation than 100. (What is the english word for an adjective containing the word inertia? Inertious?).
  17. Dont be upset over the topic title, the ka50 module is awesome, however I ran into a few issues and I am not sure if it is me being a newbie or something wrong with the control setup: I can fly a huey in dcs*, so I am not completely new to DCS or copters. *can land on a moving cargo ship during a rainstorm Why is it oversteering so much? I move my cyclic forward a bit and it instantly nose dives hard and when I let go the helicopter seems to want to spring back into some form of autohover state. I use the same cyclic axis setup as in HUEY and there it gently and precisely wobbles where I want it to be. 1. Is the ka50 far more sensitive to cyclic input? 2. Is there some form of autopilot/hover setup by default (mission started with engine running)? 3a. Should I map my tv camera control to my cyclic view button (is that called a coolie hat?), because i find it impossible to grab the mouse in mid flight to cntrol the camera. 3b. Is it possible to switch the coolie hat by another key to toggle between cockpit view and tv camera? (Assuming I do not have track IR) 4. What are good settings for a thrustmaster TFLIGHT hotas x for cyclic? For huey I use 0 deadzone, 90% saturation and no curve.
  18. Following the startup guide in the flight manual and I am stuck at this: 1. Where is that lever? 2. The engine powers up to 2 (20%?) on the gauge then goes to back to 0 after some time.
  19. Are the going to add dedicated server software at some point?
  20. Some questions about orientation and the mission planner. 1. I looked at a youtube tutorial on using the ADF, which as I understand has a custom compass needle that can be tuned to point to a specific location. Now I know that one airport has a frequency of 127MHZ, but the ADF instrument cant even go near that freq. Does that frequency stand for some other radio functionality? (I am more or less 0% experienced with real world radio equipment) 2. What use does the mission planner have? After generating a mission I was trying to see what it is for, but it only allows me to measure some distances. 3. What tools does a huey have if you skipped reading a mission briefing map and are lost? The only thing I found was asking the ATC to guide me and they offer a bearing and distance.
  21. When did the UH-1H represented in dcs go into service first? Wikipedia says 1966-67. Does that mean the one we fly ingame is the exact same thing down to all parts from that era or is there some more modern upgrades added to it?
  22. Ok so that irrational fear I developed in the last 2 days of hovering with it is normal I guess. I would very much like to play this in a multiplayer environment. However I am not sure signing up for a clan would be the right thing for me. I am more casual player when it comes to regular times. A question though about multiplayer, does it work similar to FPS games with a dedicated server that hosts missions or is it p2p?
  23. After doing some target practice I was wondering, assuming I use the guns and rockets in fixed mode, is it even feasible to attempt to slowly hover and try to open fire on ground targets? Or should I rather pre plan a strafe run and do wide turns after each attack? It is often seen in war movies that fixed gun helicopters hover in place and quickly turn on the spot to acquire new targets but keeping the helicopter still and on target seems near impossible. Also can the gun alignment be calibrated in fixed mode or is there only fixed and flex mode
  24. Very inexperienced DCS newb speaking, so... So far I gathered that there is a throttle and the collective. Throttle handling the engine power and collective handling the rotor speed. Is there any use in messing with the throttle during flight or do you simply need it during startup and do the in flight stuff with the collective?
