it's always better to train shooting at the real thing rather than a tank made from recycled cereal boxes. :)
Now don't get me wrong: I love the concept of raining steel on armor!

they have to be swiss pilots, our pilots only work from 0700-1700 office time.
By some weird coincidence, I happen to be Swiss too, whaaw. So I confirm. :)

You do know that you wear down the SSD a lot faster with minimum space left !?
Is this supposed to make me laugh? Don't worry mate, I know a fair bit about SSDs. I wish I had a 10TB drive... but with games eating up 20GB a pop, and the limited budget, that's where I'm at right now...
EDIT: excuse me, did I say 20GB a pop? I meant more like 50GB
EDIT2: oh and sorry, did not mean to sound rude; you're very right, nobody should top up those SSD's

Well, a used tank is probably fairly inexpensive in Russia. ;)
Apparently enough so that Yanks can sprinkle them over Nevada and practice shooting at them with them GAU-8A slugs!

Nobody ever told me how darn big these things are!
They do punch holes in tanks. :)

AI units can not land and takeoff again.
This has been bugging me since forever. Why is it still so?

Hi All,
launched the update process yesterday. My version was 1.5.xxxxx, and apparently I was going to update to something like 1.6.xxxxx (can't tell the exact versions right now).
I hadn't thought that it would take 15+ GB to update... Indeed, there's the 5.7GB update files, which are then unpacked to 10GB-ish. And I did not anticipate the latter. When I saw the last GB of my system HD winding down dangerously, I clicked Cancel. Which merely stopped anything the unpacker was doing, leaving all the stuff it had written to disk untouched.
I now have a system drive with about 1GB of room left.
How do I delete all these files? Where are they?

Hi all,
here's how I've been apparently messing around:
- decided to use the NTTR license I bought about 1 year ago
- downloaded the 20 GB of DCS 2.0 Open Alpha, installed
- at startup, told me I had no theatre installed, prompted for auto install
- checked FC3, A-10C, NTTR -- 24 GB download starts
- download failed 3 times
- elected to copy the "aircraft" and "terrain" folders from 1.5.3 into the 2.0 folders
- downloaded only NTTR and this time it worked
- now in 2.0, I just cannot be in the cockpit of an A-10C. I can add a plane to the mission editor, and tell it it's the Player's, but when the sim starts I'm looking at the map and can only have external views of an AI flying my plane
Maybe I shouldn't have copied the folders manually?
Please help!

There's a lot of very interesting stuff going on on the forum, but this is one of the coolest post! Thanks to all involved!
EDIT: his referring to afterburner jets/pilots as "pointy nose guys" really cracked me up

Nice 70's flight test footage of A-10 ejection in mid-air + plane smashing the deck:

Dude, I have posted a thread on my office chair stands I just made, and a forum mod has moved it to this section of the forum which I didn't know exist. I clicked around a bit, and I'm absolutely blown away by your build. It is incredible and I don't understand how you make half of that stuff, much less how to communicate with DCS to have real gauge needles moving etc...
In my next life, I will do just this thing that you do!
Nice job, congrats!

I wouldn't call that as basic or simple, as that is fairly complex design with the cuts and joinery. Light weight yes, sturdy possible, but just complex one.
Hey, nice to see your version of an ultra-basic cockpit! I really admire the simplicity of your solution, I just wish you posted a picture of the support mounted on the chair to fully see how it goes.
About complexity, I agree, mine is more complex; but you have to admit, it is still very basic compared to some stuff you see on the internet! Incredible custom controllers mounted in reconstructed cockpits, along with Helios "glass gauges", and all that running on 3-screen setups... some of that stuff I can't even dream of! I think putting your stand and mine in the same category still makes sense :)
The reason I went for lightweight is mainly because I had no armrest to attach stuff onto, and therefore had to rely on the only 4 threads available under the seat. Also, it was lots of fun to draw and assemble. :smilewink: And sturdiness: I couldn't be sure before I put the throttle on the tray, but it's really solid, with virtually no elasticity at all!
Thanks for sharing yours!

Thanks for the positive comments, All!
Yep, definitely a good old iPad with the free CDU app. Kind of slows down at times, but works good. There's no going back now I'm used to it...

You want an ultra-basic cockpit, and all you have is a good quality, but basic office chair. You want it to be easily setup and removed. Here's what you do:
1. Think up and draw pieces to cut in 5mm MDF:
2. Quadruple test your assembly by drawing:
3. Get the cutting done, assemble everything using cyano-acryl glue and attach your assembly to the underside of the seat, using custom-made thumbscrews:
The seat is left totally undamaged, thumbscrews on the underside use the original chair legs assembly's threads in there! And, contrary to what the seat might look like, the setup is actually quite comfortable to fly on! Tucking the stick's baseplate under the seat of my pants makes it just fine.
I've been on this for a few weeks now and I felt like sharing...

A lot more than just HMCS and ARKWS has been upgraded from the suite 3 (ish) A-10C we have in DCS World and suite 8 of the real aicraft.
Given the title of this thread, I dare ask again, what are those upgrades from suites 4 and beyond? Besides the helmet and smart rocket?
-
Okay, if anyone meets a problem of this sort, here's the solution I've come up with. To make things work again after I installed my new router, I had to force change the IPs of all devices on the LAN by setting their IP to manual (not DHCP) for each of them (I had trouble with other interaces on the network -- MacBook and another PC laptop).
Everything started magically working again.
-
Still no luck. This is mind boggling. Do I need to forward ports on my router? Sounds unnecessary, I always thought you needed that for things out from outta your home network.
Anyway, I'm stumped. Anyone has an idea/suggestion?
EDIT: whoop, major update, actually I realized it used to work with my older router. I switched to a new, more advanced one last week. So, it's clear that the issue is here.
New question: is there a common setting in routers which could affect communication between DCS and the CDU app?

We have HMCS with is a fraction of the cost of the F-35 helmet and actually much cheaper than JHMCS the F-15 or F-16 use.
Mmh. Nice. Googled it quick and actually I think JHMCS is actually what I called the "bulgy visor" helmet. Anyway, implementing such a device in DCS sounds like a pain to make properly. Plus I guess some of its working are still classified. Not accounting for the fact that it would probably take a while getting used to, playwise, with all the symbology permanently suprimposed on the view.
-
The A-10C has received many upgrades since the version we have and none of them are forthcoming for the sim.
What are these upgrades? Do they have these million dollar helmets like they wear in the F-35? I've seen pictures with drivers wearing high tech helmets with those bulgy visors...

I'm having trouble making this work. I had it working right after I entered DCS.exe in the firewall exception list, everything was fine, but now it's not working anymore. Weird. It's not working at all, I can't send button presses to DCS, nor do I get display "cloning" in the app.
- iPad address + port are correctly set up in Export.lua
- script is in both the saved games and DCS scripts folders
- firewall has exception
I don't get how this could work prior and now it doesn't.
Any idea?

Wow thanks for all the replies.
It looked like you were looking to expand your knowledge of the A10C.Always happy to learn new stuff and I appreciate you providing with info.
SAM triangulation (with RWR)Wow, that's new. Need to check this out.
Googledoc LASTE CDU Wind Correction created by Bunyap Sims for converting wind data.Very handy, thanks! I think I'll start entering winds more often.
-
The wind correction entry in the CDU only affects dumb weapons.
Okay. So it adjusts the CCIP/CCRP solution accordingly, I guess? I mean, because these bombs are "dumb", something must be going on in the IFFCC.
Gun cross occult....Yeah. I knew that. I also don't see how this relates to the CDU... :)
-
Add wind data in the LASTE panel.
Cool. Am I right thinking this helps "smart" weapon delivery accuracy?

Thanks guys, the cleanup command did it. Continuing the topic: I've uninstalled 2.0 Open Alpha to get back to normal with this drive space issue. In the Open Alpha folder there's still 8GB worth of data left untouched. Can I safely delete it all?
