I have a Ultrawidescreen and its pretty great. But if I would go back to 2d (Currently on a Rift-S and waiting on my HP G2), I would buy a 40"+ 4k TV/Monitor. IMHO the vertical space is as important as the horizontal space.
But dont try to play anything other than Flightsims on that TV... (Inputlag etc ;-))
Yeah this is exactly the problem, my screen is not for flight sims only, but other games and computer use too ... also limited space but that could be solved if one truly wants....

Good lord. I just started up DCS in 2d . (with LG GN 850B ultrawide) . I was kind of disappointed by how GOOD it looked compared to VR . And i play at 300% in VR supersampling with the Reverb. I might get back to track-ir and 2d ! . Man, i had never even looked at DCS in 2d after i got my Reverb (back then i had a 1920x1080 16:9).
I mean, VR gives you more immersion but, i'm also a sucker for nice graphics. And i got 160 fps to boot !
At this point i do not see myself to go VR only, VR is nice and cool but not without its drawbacks. While incredibly immersive, the lack of field of view and poorer graphics also destroy immersion pretty good for me. I am not going to sell my Trackir, and heck, i sometimes even fly without trackir! Well, only civ sims tho... So i think i am getting ultrawide too and getting both of best worlds.

I've got this https://www.amazon.com/LG-34GK950F-B-34-21-Ultragear/dp/B0798Q8KG4
I did quite a bit of research and settled on this for the following reasons. So happy I went with ultrawide and spent the money on a good monitor, never going back.
- Ultrawide, 34", meaning it was as tall as my 16:9 27" but much wider (21:9)
- 144hz refresh rate, definitely seems smoother and more responsive when using trackIR and checking different view zones quickly (with the right settings obviously, you're not getting 144hz on the ground)
- Freesync 2 compatible, can engage g-sync on my Nvidia card and works flawlessly, no tearing.
- Good image quality and excellent backlight, I do design work as well and having good color reproduction and contrast is important. I hate nothing more than having a weak backlight as it muddies the whites and highlights and makes them greyish.
Negatives
- HDR mode is garbage, you actually get very good bright whites/dark darks with it off. If you turn it on it turns your whites into a kind of high value nasty warm grey, it's really, really gross.
- Some games don't support ultrawide. Might not be an issue if you only play DCS; Valorant, Synthetik, others will give you black bars on the side. Ghetto.
Cool an IPS ultrawide with reasonable price. Well actually it's 1199 euros where i live with taxes. A tad too high but i'll definitely take a deeper look. Thanks

I have a reverb (VR) , and also a ultra wide monitor (3440x1440P) . Honestly, both are awesome for flight sims. Motion sickness is not a concern with a monitor ever , and in VR the motion sickness is gone in a short while.
If you don't like VR, i would definately recommend the ultra wide screen. It gives a more spacious feel than a normal screen.
I believe i can overcome the motion sickness. Oculus Link updated today, and i get much clearer image now, however it STILL isn't as clear as i've hoped but now my GPU is seriously bottlenecking and causing issues. But now we are in point i can truly start properly playing in VR after my 3080 arrives, some day. some year.
-
Partially solved, oculus link software updated so i can use proper resolutions. Much better now, not quite perfect but i think i can fine tune the rest and now my GPU is limiting the fun
-
So you felt discomfort with both 2D and 3D, that´s interesting. Is your eyesight with issues? My workmate for instace got a piece of metal into his eye and his perception is quite different, not to mention he is not able to use my Rift S at all.
Mind you i only get 2d discomfort on very rare occasions, like 1% of games i've played, but it does happen sometimes.... i just wonder would 21:9 make that percent go higher. Btw i know a lot of people who have had discomfort using a monitor. I have no issues on my eyes as far as i know...
-
I thought motion sickness was a VR thing? I've never gotten sick with a monitor flying. I did with auto racing though.
Well i never have experienced motion sickness on flight sims using monitor, but there are few other games where i have suffered motion sickness using monitor... if 21:9 worsens that, it's something to consider..
-
After a little dissapointment on Virtual Reality especially their lack of proper field of view and general discomfort, so while waiting for a better headsets to arrive, i'm considering of changing my 16:9 fullhd monitor to a 34" 1440p 21:9 screen. How that works in games, especially in flight sims? How about motion sickness in fast paced games, is 21:9 better or worse than 16:9 in terms of motion sickness?
Thanks.

It's really hard to say without seeing what you're seeing. It could be setting issue or it could be Quest. Or simply that your expectation was too high. VR in general is not as clear as 4K definitely but I was hoping Quest2 and Reverb2 would be comparable to 1080P.
Some things you could try is disabling MSAA or any type of anti aliasing. And make sure you're not using any depth of field or motion blur or bloom. Those are usually turned on by default on "Max" setting.
In DCS Hornet, the button-texts on the cockpit displays, like "sa, hsi, menu" etc, i can barely see them without leaning in, and the fact i KNOW what it says plays a role. If i lean in i can see them pretty good but i still notice how the resolution is not very good. In IL2 Sturmovik, i can see the analog gauges of P51 mustang, but it's not very clear, and cockpit texts are mostly quite fuzzy.... From what i've HEARD is that all those should be more clear.
But yeah, this would easily be an issue with Oculus Link not using full resolution, but how can i check that? the debugtool does absolutely nothing for me.
-
That's weird. Quest 2 resolution is way better than my Rift s and only slightly less than reverb / reverb g2; you should have a good clarity with pixel density set to 1 (so no supersampling). I'm considering upgrade my headset and gpu (from current 2070 to 3080 or 6800xt maybe) and I'm still undecided between quest 2 and reverb g2. I'm more towards the g2 even if I'll loose my oculus software (I'll sell my Rift s), so the Quest 2 could be a good alternative to save my oculus library, but if it's not so good in clarity... maybe it's up to the oculus link connection?
But i do not know what it should be. I understand VR is never the same as your best monitors. But i keep hearing that Oculus Link is not fully implemented to Quest 2. Some say it lacks the 90hz (it certainly does) but some say that it works with lower resolution of Quest 1. Don't know for sure. But Q1 has 40% or so less pixels and running the LCD on non-native resolution, would indeed cause issues. Only time will tell for sure. I personally get solid 2.8gbps connection and the link seems to be working fine otherwise.
Games like Dirt rally, the visuals are great, since you do not need to read anything small.
But the FOV is very bad. G2 probably is not much better either.

Hello. Trying DCS with Quest 2 using 2,8gbps usb connection and link. Quality setting is highest, tried 3664 resolution on oculus link beta and non-beta (seems not to make a difference), maxed out bandwidth.
My new GPU is still pending, but dispite bad fps with my current old GPU i've tried relatively high settings just sitting in the cockpit, but i cannot get very good clarity. But this is my first VR experience, i am not sure am i expecting too much from VR...?
When i sit in my hornet, not leaning forward, i can see the smaller texts on ddi's, but they are a bit blurry and i can read them fast only because i know what to read.... I also tried Aerofly FS2 maxxed out and that too is a bit blurry, the instruments are ok (not great but decent), can read them but even the cessna radiostack is a tad smudgy. The scenery is also somewhat blurry. Loading screens look very good and i can use chrome and read websites in VR just fine, while the resolution clearly isn't monitor quality. I've tried to eliminate my eyes being the problem (i do not use glasses and my ipd should be around 63-64mm so pretty optimal i guess), cleaning the lenses and whatnot...
Is this how VR just is? If so, it's a bit dissapointing, since i find this smoothness/blurriness to be very tiring to my eyes.
Please tell me how VR should look, using the hornet for example, on what HMD. Do you need to lean forward to see _clearly_ etc?
I understand the Link is still in betaphase, but any reason to believe it will improve a lot? Q2 has much better resolution than Rift S, but i only hear people using Rift S how clear everything is..
Thanks alot!

Next gen GPUs on PCI express 3.0 will work the same as on PCI 4.0
They are not bottlenecked by the interface, that was tested many times before when the 5700XT appeared.
No difference.
PCI 4.0 will get a difference with SSDs (and not many untill new models arrive).
What about the future? due to FS2020 i am planning on upgrading my CPU on very fast schedule. AMD has PCI4.0 support, and while i am pretty certain that Nvidia ampere do not benefit that, but i am planning to continue to upgrade only GPU every 2. generations. So like with this CPU, it had 770 first now 1070, for the next one i'll go with say 3070 and in 3-4 years go for 5070 or similar. And it would be really sad if pci 3.0 would bottleneck 5070.
AMD has superior multicore performance, but Intel atm is king what it comes to DCS/FS2020 i believe. But are things going to change? Is Ryzen 9 generally as good as intel in real life for DCS and FS2020?

In my mind the L39 is the most realistic plane. Lots of written and video material on the internet and the DCS one seems incredibly well made, that said, it must be one of the easiest plane to model since no prop, subsonic, pretty tame and not very powerful, simple, stable aircraft etc.
As for WW2 plane, i have no idea but now that i've tried them all i think the Spitfire feels most realistic for me but it is just a hunch based on nothing solid.
-
What are you saying there? So the real pilots get an "unrealistic" real plane behavior? That's what it sounds like what you've just said!
Everything that i say falls into "AFAIK" category, so bear that in mind.
AFAIK in real L39 there is (dedicated?) another trim tab that actuates when FULL flaps are deployed (Wikipedia: An automatic trimming system was present, the flaps and the trim system being connected in order to counteract the potentially large pitch changes that would otherwise be generated by vigorous movements of the flaps), so that the plane, in real life, will have very little pitch change. (According to POH). In DCS i think this tab is modeled, which is realistic, but makes us trim alot against it because our regulart sticks are always trimmed at neutral position due to springs. So, AFAIK, in real life the full flaps is "not much happening" , but for us with regular sticks it is violent-ish pitch-up we have to deal with, that is "unrealistic" because real life pilot does not encounter that.
I hope you got what i mean and someone who knows better should participate.
-
In my mind this is probably the most realistic plane to fly in DCS. Lots of videos in YT and written text about real l39 and ours seems to be pretty spot on for most parts.
Then again this is probably the more easier plane to model in terms of FM. Subsonic jet, relatively shallow speed regime, lack of spinning propeller creating forces to the airframe and control surfaces etc.
Only gripe from me is the full flap behaviour. The autotrim event indeed is realistic but as we often use poor self-centering sticks, the experience is wrong, afaik irl l39 there is very little pitch change when applying full flaps. I wish there was a special tab option for alternative flaps behaviour, that would be less realistic aerodynamically but more realistic from how pilot experiences.

Something i would really love to see in DCS is something like the EDEN editor from ArmA3 and Zeus expansion. Basically a 3D editor (EDEN) that got "pushed" into real-time gameplay with a game master slot that has the ability to use such 3D interface to spawn/delete/manage units or simply control them like any other RTS game. I understand it would be a HUGE undertaking for ED though it would make the game master's life super-cool and the mission creators' job super easy
Yes indeed. I think even the original OFP had pretty good and intuitive mission editor, much more so than the one in DCS. I also feel (from a novice-standpoint) that Mission editor, while decent, should have had more love overtime. I've been DCS flyer since 2012 and from my point of view, the editor has not evolved that much.
After all, DCS gameplay is very heavily based on mission editor, more so than many other games.
-
Remember the good old operation flashpoint game? It had a great mission editor and i'd really love to see two things adapted from it.
1 - probability for a spawn for a.i units in percents
2 - spawn radius as in circle diameter for a.i. units. (Units would spawn randomly into this circle)
Easy way to add randomness to the missions.
-
So i'm kind of out of stick buttons and i'd love to see an option in control setup where i could bind weapon release and gun / missile trigger for one button! Thanks.

It was fun to watch how losing 10.000 lbs affected your dogfight moves...
However, remaining few hundred lbs of gas you should use to run away as far as you could from angry villagers you harassed with rockets before you would need to punch out.
:))
Yeah. This is actually ground-attack test mission, you can see the antenna and the units, i was suppose to attack. It once happened that i shot my two sidewinders without hitting the mig, and even managed to only damage it with cannon until i ran out.... so i was like, hell, i got rockets, why not to try that, and i did. Then i decided to try it again, i still have the 9 mikes on my wings but solely using rockets this time.
What next? Bomb the mig21? :-))

Nice vid. You have such smooth gameplay, can you share your pc specs? What do you use to limit fps? Any settings tips? Thank you ;)
Actually atm if i play using borderless screen i get terrible fps, so i have to alt-enter for fullscreen, no idea why. i also had chrome open when i was recording (it may cause stuttering sometimes)
I have old i5-4670k 16gb ram and 1070 gtx. Ssd installation and 1080p gameplay. Everything is "high", msaa 4x ssaa is off. Terrain shadows must be flat, that i hate, otherwise i get low fps near the ground. I use vsync that limits the fps, not ideal...
generally i am really pleased how smoothly DCS works thesedays, for a flight sim!
-
Now i am far from a good dogfighter but killing Mig-21 is always fun. A tad easy with modern A2A weaponry. So i tried to use air to ground rockets instead! It turned out to be quite an epic dogfight:

Thank you. No Walmart on this continent, but i try to find something similar!

Hello...
I've had TrackIR for many many years but today it has been acting funny... the Z axis (zoom) is very very jumpy, or inaccurate... first i thought it was scattered sunlight from outside maybe but it was not that... If i look the camera view in TIR software, the right reflector goes sometimes from green to red, while all the other stay green all the time. Visually the reflector seems OK tho..
Do the headpiece wear out? Any home made tips to enhance it? Thanks!
-
none of that works... :\ if i do repair, will i lose any settings, mainly joystick binds and graphics settings? or logbook entries
Quick wish: AB and SPS detent on ctrl-enter view
in Controller Profiles

I've understood that real Mig-21 has SPS detent, so you won't accidentally go below SPS power on apporach, that would be dangerous. Could it be possible to add SPS detent (crossline) and while you're at it AB detent to the controls view (ctrl-enter) for us who have no real detents.
Thanks!
