What a great thread!! :)
First of all, I think that a realistic carrier environment is paramount. All the catapults should work, and preferably the JBDs as well (maybe with a "U1, U2 key etc. command). The arresting gear should be visible to all players when a plane lands. By that, I mean that it should show the payout of whichever pendant was caught by the plane's hook. It would also be "nice" to have a carrier deck well populated with objects, such as other aircraft and ground support equipment, preferably user defined/placed. Also, the Mirror Landing System should be functional.
As for aircraft, sure we'd love to have every plane that ever flew off a carrier! But realistically, if this were to simulate current US Naval Aviation, the Super Bug, the EA6B (or whatever iteration they're up to now), the E2C, and the S3B would be sufficient. Personally, I have no interest in player flyable helos, but if that is on the table, far be it for me to complain about it.
Obviously, it would be very important for the aircraft to be as accurately made as possible. The cockpits and avionics should be accurate, and the weapons' functionality should be as well.
One last request, just as long as we're dreaming here, I'd like to see a more complete implementation of multiplayer air to air refueling. LOMAC made a great effort, but fell somewhat short of the mark. The Buddy Pack should be an available load out for the F/A-18 and the S3, with player control over the hose and basket - in addition to a better code for the AI to handle this mission for player and clients alike.
There, that is my wish list. OH YEAH! one more thing. I'd like to see a little better environmental system. By that, I mean better depiction of clouds, various sea states, pitch, roll and heave of the ships, and wakes behind the ships!
