  1. I resorted to mapping a joystick button to padlock view. When in air to air mode it will lock the nearest enemy chopper. If you then press and hold the target lock button the Shkval will track to and lock onto your current padlocked target. Wait until they are tracking somewhat toward or away from you (so the missile has a chance of tracking the target) and then fire 2 missiles about 1 sec apart.

I my experience this rarely fails. Good hunting :pilotfly:

  2. The collective will stay put all by itself ...

I have personally exerienced the collective rapidly move to the full up position and the full down position when not being held. With the latter I was flying dual doing low level cattle mustering when we both assumed the other had the collective - when it drops suddenly at 50 feet agl your heart rate tends to go up rather quickly  Ah yes, we are all perfect pilots with hindsight :smilewink:

There have also been quite a few instances of pilotless helicpters becoming airborne when the the pilot neglected to apply the friction lock before exiting :joystick:

As I said earlier, it all depends on how well balanced the rotors are, among other things.

  3. IRL it was common for us to hold the cyclic between our knees when you neded both hands or the right hand in particular. The collective would often stay put for a few moments depending on the particular machine and how well balanced the rotors were. It was also possible to hold the collective by pressing the side of your leg against it. Some have a friction nut as well. Most small civilian helicopters do not have trim that functions in any way like a small fixed wing aircaft such as the 172 :smilewink:

In this sim I have my collective set up like the real thing but with enough friction so it won't fall under its own weight if I let go. That leaves me free to use the left hand for the keyboard and if I need to use the mouse I simply fly for lefthanded for the duration.

  4. B.P2.1 is an interesting one---gave it a quick try and made it to 40% but was out of ammo, and did not have time to refuel (my winge bit it early---those strykers are not worth even going after.)

The missle sucking M1A2s are one issue in the GOW, but you touch on one which is more of an issue. DCS BS really has the ability to simultate FAC, and situational comms. Wags decided not to go there. I imagine the workload was part of the issue--I have the impression he did the whole thing almost by himself.

It's a shame though, since the GOW is the showcase for DCS and what it can do. It really would not be hard to add comms to the missions, but I don't think they want to take the time.

ED has a huge network of testers etc and ethusiasts, yet new missions are few and far between. I don't think they realise how crucial fresh content is to this sim.

Oleg had many patches in IL2 which included aircraft for no charge, along with the many tweaks. I don't expect that from ED since the aircraft are so closely modeled. But they are missing a big opportunity in not using their network to create new campaigns and provide them to users. IMHO. Such a gesture would pay for itself many times over.

    Ditto

  5. This happens to me often enough, what with hardware issues and RL intervening. I just open the player.lua with Notepad++ and reset it. The next mission to fly will only have a 2 line entry (4 lines if you include the mission number entries), so I delete them and edit the last mission to have the same format. It's a good idea to backup the player.lua each time as a small typo can reneder the campaign defunct :joystick:

  6. I perhaps have a solution for your rudder problem.

I use X52 (non-pro) and the pedals of my G25. I got just about the same problem. So here's the possible solution: Did you delete the rudder axis of you X52 in the controls-axis section? In other words: How many axis do you have assigned to the rudder controls? If it is both the X52 and the pedals, remove the X52 assignment. That should do the trick.

I am wondering if your 'stuck' pedals problem is to do with trim and/or autopilot. Try reseting trim (LCrtl - T) and enabling Flight Director (LCtrl - A) to see if that fixes it.

The / and * keys on the Numpad do your zooming. I also map the LWin - Numpad2 key to my controller so you get a good close view of the Shkval and Abris.

  7. The F10 map displays elevation data. I use it for finding the lowest pass over mountain ranges.

Yep, back to good ol' basics - look at map, look out window and identify ground reference object.

    We call it IFR - I Follow Roads, Railwaylines, Rivers . . . :D

  8. Yes it is very misleading that they call it Mission Success % in the mission and Mission Success Rate % in the campaign summary screen. It should really say Balance of Power and each mission should start at 50% and go up or down depening on the progression of the mission. The problem with this arises with Recon and SEAD missions where the neither the allies or the enemy are necessarily advancing - in this case the "score" will stay at 0% indefinately unless you do something. With Area Defence and Advance missions the scenario will unfold whether you do anything or not. This is a limitation of the way the campaign engine is designed. It has it's advantages and disadvantages - you just need to recognise the different types of missions and play them accordingly.

  9. Not really frame rate related but you say you have Vsync forced off, this is ok for benchmarking to see maximum fps available when tweaking settings. But for normal play in would leave it On. If you have it off you will notice "tearing" of the screen when you pan left and right with your view.

Anisotropic Filtering can be set to max (16x) for your rig (and most everybody's), it causes no drop in FPS and really sharpens up the ground textures. I leave AntiAliasing on 2x on my rig, should be fine for you too. Given the res you run at any more would be a waste. I think full AA (x16) will cause a FPS drop for you at the Resolution your running.

You could turn on "AntiAliasing- Gamma Correction", supposedly it "improves the quality and color of 3D images". I have it on but I cant say I notice much visual or FPS difference.

You can set the option "Texture Filtering -Quality" to "High Quality", this will improve textures again.

I would leave all other settings at their default.

    This is good advice

  10. Let me ask you one thing - can you confidently hover and land the helicopter without any of the autopilot channels enabled? I firmly believe that unless you can do this then you don't really know how to control the helicopter properly. Autopilot is a very useful and necessary function especially when targeting and you need to have your head down so often, but it shouldn't be used to disguise bad technique.

From my real world experience of helicopter flying I would say that the most common cause of what you describe is over-controlling. It is a very common fault. Try this - when you are hovering, forget about trying to correct for what the helicopter is doing and concentrate on holding the controls absolutely still. Hey presto! It does very little when you do very little. It only requires very small inputs to keep it from drifting.

    Good luck!

    Jack :)

  11. Thx! I'll look in the pit for the command corresponding to rt-alt-q. That's prob the command I'm looking for.

It's the forward most button on the left side of the PVI panel. Look at page 2-59 - it's the one marked #4.

FWIW, I use the Airfield mode (#6 on that page) for RTB to rearm quite a lot, and also of course Target point (#7).

    Jack

  12. Pressing 'R' on the keyboard will engage Route mode - if Autopilot is engaged then the helicopter will attempt to follow the currently selected waypiont in the PVI (and indicated by the double yellow marker on the ADF - see page 2-16). If you have turn-to-target engaged ('Q') it will override Route mode. Also, when you engage Flight Director the autopilot will be disengaged, except the control dampening aspect.

I think Nav mode just refers to that particular selected mode in the ABRIS and PVI (R-Alt+Q). The FD cues may not be available in some PVI modes.

    Cheers,

    Jack :pilotfly:

ps: I should add that I am by no means an expert on this stuff - I only know what I use and what works for me. Others may give better information :joystick:

  13. If you use the Uncage/Designate Target button (o) without the HMS it will initially turn on the Shkval camera and thereafter start/stop the side scanning.

With the HMS on, it will move the Shkval to align with the HMS. It is then necessary to hit the Lock Target button once to range-find and stop the Shkval from free ranging.

You also hold down the Target Lock button to temporarily disengae a locked target if you wish to move the Shkval.

  14. This certainly makes a difference to the way you approach a mission.

However, when you view the score during a mission it actually says 'X% Mission Complete' hence the reason some of us came to see it as player progress. It occurs to me that it would be better if it said something like 'Balance of Power x%' the value of which could be negative or postive. Just an idea ... :joystick:

  15. More likely what is happening is that your friendly forces are taking loses and that in turn in reducing the mission score leading you to believe your statement.
I understand this, but would not this suggest it is possible to acheive a result greater than 100%? This I have never seen?

The score should not be thought of as the "player score" but rather the state of the mission ... 50 and above player side is winning , 49 and below the enemy side is winning. The final mission score then determines which side advances in the next mission (phase).

OK, now we are getting somewhere! That makes far more sense to me. Thank you sir :)

  16. you certainly don't need to 'kill everything on the map' to get 100%.

    My experience differs I'm afraid.

I hasten to add here that I don't want my comments to be seen as gratuitous criticism. Quite to the contrary, I am in total awe of all the people that put this amazing sim together.
