  1. With FOV they are refering to the gimbal limit of the seeker, which is propably +/-60°.

     

    But the -3dB beamwidth (the beamwidth of the seeker antenna) will be far far less. To cover the whole +/-60° gimbal in both dimensions the seeker has to do mechanical scanning with its antenna which will take some time (not really modelled in DCS).

    But one thing I would Like to put out there. People in the DCS community do have a lot of knowledge in certain areas so we will always find some way to point out something that’s wrong. But in the end it is impossible to programme real world correctly so in the end the Aim120 we have is a very good missile and is easily the best missile in DCS. There’s no cheating going on and people will always want the missile that wins no matter how fake it my be. So let’s be happy with what We have so the dev’s can start spending time on more thing to benefit everyone. At least till the meteor comes out anyway lol

  2. I think your confusing "keeps in the air flying for long time" and having a doppler shift. Yes chaff stays airborne for a long time, but only for a very short time does it have a Vc above the doppler filter. Once the chaff drops below the Vc filter (again this happens very quickly, chaff is very light), the radar can filter it out as normal. Now if the plane is passing through the beam when dispensing chaff, and the chaff has a higher RCS, its very likely that it could, for that moment, switch to the chaff, and temporarily take the beam off the target. However as most sources make clear, the chaff will drop below the doppler filter very quickly, and the missile would go back into search/memory, and find you when you reaqcuire IF you are in the FoV, which would be true for the almost instant recommits you see me doing in the vid.

     

    Now IK that proper chaff modeling isnt quite so simple to emulate. But at least ED, for now, can tune things so the same net effect is produced: e.g, you cant expect to notch for 0.1 sec and recommit and not expect the missile to find you again. And this is for all the DCS RF missiles.

     

    Actually so much more is going on, however chaff just doesn’t disappear cause it’s not moving. A radar beam or radar pulse is nothing more then just radiation going out and bouncing back to the antenna yes there is multiple ways pulses can be manipulated but no matter What radar your using everything is going to reflect energy back to the antenna, even a cloud. So yes even though the radar is a Doppler shift radar the Radar still has to deal with everything out there. So chaff just doesn’t disappear when it slows down. In fact as the missile is getting closer the Antenna will have so much energy bouncing back from the chaff the radar will not be able to detect anything else plus there is also a minimum range between objects before a radar can determine the difference and although it is small it is still in the meters. So that’s why we have anti clutter circuits to help the user or help the radar process what’s going on within the pulses. So if chaff is over whelming the antenna then the radar will have to use AGC of some sort (or another circuits we use on our own radars but don’t wish to talk about) which is now making the antenna less sensitive which now helps it to detect pulses that are bouncing of a moving target but that now decreases detection range and it also takes time, in fact it will Most likely be using pulse to pulse integration to build up enough research to now determine that there is actually a moving target, it’s not instant And it can actually take a second or 2 or even 3. Now every time it loses the target it will have to go through the process again and depending on how long it has lost track can mean the processing has to start from the beginning taking all that time again. So while the radar is dealing with all that the target has now flown outside the missiles FOV so unless it’s updated by datalink it will never find the target again cause it has recalculated the intercept point by its last track, I know someone here will talk about how it has 60degree FOV but even that is pushing the boundary as that will more then likely be on the very limits of the 3db point so will only pickup targets that are very close meaning the target actually won’t be hugely off bore sight before it picks it up again. I’m not confident on what I can say so I’ll leave it at that but I have had doubts for awhile that the Aim-120 can be so resistant to chaff. Especially against aircraft will low RCS

    Also on user planes this definitely doesnt apply, otherwise how could you hit someone and say knck an engne out

     

    I understand where your coming from, but we’re talking about radars and anti radiation missile. So for this case antenna’s aren’t a seperate hit box so you can’t just destroy a antenna and not damage other parts of a vehicle or ship. So you can’t just stop a antenna from radiating. You can however damage a whole vehicle where it stops functioning which I think it about 70% - 80% of its over all health.

  4. maybe this will help we know that new API will shape the missile performance but so far SD-10 in many aspects need fix since ED started this ... this missile need some love and not just SD-10 TBH once Aim family got the new API all missiles acting crap we must be more patient but u know in MP it will be good to have some adjustment to non aim family missiles so we can move forward to more realistic missiles With ED help as they said and no complaining for that at least 1 Dev team handle this will settle down a very old argument about missiles

     

    Totally agree, the Russian family of missiles is heavily over neglected. The Aim-120 has already had every bit of attention ED have to offer. Maybe take a tiny break from the Aim family missiles and give the R serious some very overdue attention.

     

    I don’t fly any of the Russian aircraft and even I feel bad winning a fight against them. Was never a fair fight from the start

     

    I do have to admit tho sense the last update I have noticed a increase to the kill ratio or the Russian family go up on the growling sidewinder servers. Maybe I’m just paying more attention to it now perhaps.

  5. At least looking at the G meter fluctuating in tacview, the missile was still guiding, dunno, maybe its just tacview things. But I wouldnt be surprised if proxy fuzes in DCS werent linked to the battery life.

     

    I didn’t notice the G’s. I put it down to fuzing wasn’t part of any battery coding also so I would expect all the missiles to do the same. Tried to get a few other missiles to do it but they don’t predict a intercept point good enough to get close to the target after the battery dies. They all just nose over towards to the ground after the battery dies. But I figured the other missiles would probably act in the same manner if they did get close enough. But would like to see it.

     

    @harker yeah I make the target fly straight with no evasive Manoeuvre. Then shoot at long ranges to narrow down how far I can get just before the battery runs out. Doesn’t actually help me to get targets obviously cause nothing flies straight but it’s just good to know.

  6. I have been spending a lot of time in the F-16 lately and I always do a lot of testing with the missiles to get a good understanding on how to employ it best. However in the process I came across the Aim-120C regularly killing target 100s after launch. The purpose of me testing this was to see how far I can kill the target at certain speeds with the 80s battery life that I have been informed the Aim-120C to have. How is the proximity fusing still killing targets 20S after the battery is dead which is a very long time after, Does it rely on it own power source of some kind?

  7. They havent yet tho, and until then its the 3rd parties responsibility to maintain the missiles, not ED.

     

    I thought I read a post by a 3rd party that ED do now control all the tracking and sensor data for missiles. I will have a look and see if I can find post again. or ED could answer this

  8. Does the SD-10 have proximity fusing after the 100s battery life?

    I have been doing some testing with missileS just to learn what they can do and in some of the tests the Aim-120c which I believe has a 80s battery life is still killing targets 102s after launch which is a very long time after the battery is supposed to have died. It does appear they stop tracking and fly to a predicted point but they still explode as soon as they get near the target. I can’t seem to get the SD-10 to do the same after the 100s. But that’s what I would expect cause how does proximity fusing work with no battery.

  9. When do people use type 1 vs Type 2 on the jamming pod? I know when in type 1 it only starts jamming when something has you locked and in type 2 it just jams everything. Do people find 1 vs 2 is better for different situations? Like air to air combat I thought type 1 would be good so the enemy see you but when they go to lock it fails but then I reappear when they unlock me as if it was a mind game. But I figured with everyone shooting in tws this wouldn’t work. When I conduct SEAD I have it in type 2 so I get ranging details but can’t figure why I would use type 1

  10. You got any link to the statement? Getting vehicles on the DL page, just from having the radar pointed somehwere in map mode does not sound right to me.

     

    I currently work on a type of surveillance aircraft with modern ground/surface tracking radar. I’m not going into much details but our radars do actually do this sort of, I can not explain it too much but it comes down to the Doppler (movement) and anti clutter circuits. Imagine the F-16 radar in air to air mode where your not actually getting the raw radar like I do in real life but your actually getting a tracker which is something the radar has determined through a lot of processing that it is a moving object that is not weather. However for the ground radar movement can simply be rocking side to side. The movement only has to be small not actually travelling over the earths surface. I can’t speak for the JF-17 but I’m just saying radars can actually do this but the one I use is much bigger and much more powerful and it has a very unique modulation in it which is what actually makes this possible due to clutter. As for the data link, we’ll if the radar has determined it to be a contact and it creates a tracker then that tracker can be sent over datalink. Remember the radar see everything but it’s up to the processing technic and the operator to cut out what is irrelevant and what needs to be displayed to the operator as something useful.

     

    But you can simply just have too much clutter around where the radar just simply can’t make out the contact or your just coming from a bad angle but I think this would be very hard to program into DCS. Of course there is so much more science and work to it then just simply just point the radar in the right direction but again I don’t think DCS could account for all the science involved so we have what we have.

    That’s exactly what I mean. I treat the JF as a strike aircraft that is very capable of defending itself. So that load out is more ground and SEAD attack with some self defence if need be. Plus getting used to trimming due to more then likely bringing the SD-10’s back home

  12. I was chasing a F16C from behind, the distance was between 2km-0.5km. I was using DGFT mode with vertical scan, but the seeker head almost never lock on to that F16, even its afterburner was at the max, I only got radar lock so if I fired the missile, it wont track at all, and the F16 is well within the circle on my HUD. Is this intended or a glitch? Because I saw other people able to slave their seeker head to radar just fine.

     

     

    Update: I just done a few more test with AI, the seeker head seems glitched, it almost never lock on when chasing enemy from behind, but when head on, it has much higher chance to get a lock.

     

    You have to bind a control for it. I can’t remember what it’s called exactly but it’s something like Cage or seam. When you press that while the PLE5 Is selected the circle will move around your HUD. When The radar locks something the circle will move to the same area and Aquire the target for you but only if it can pickup a heat signature enough. I haven’t used it for a little while but has generally work really well for me, but I don’t know if it’s changed recently.

    Yep that’s correct. You have to be 63 numbers higher or lower and that’s the case for all aircraft. But I’m fairly sure you only get ranging information not bearing. So it’s good for spacing but not actually tracking except for the fact your can see if your getting closer or tracking away. Again I’m sure that’s the case for all aircraft also expect purpose built tacan stations like tankers and such.

    That’s must be a new thing, when they first came out I used them a lot and they worked very well. Your aircraft would be destroyed for sure going near the impact area.

  15. I should’ve said public PVP. I have done online sessions with my friends and I have been getting +37nm kills all the time, no issues. Against experienced players, I have been able to get 20nm kills easy, as long as I’m high and fast enough.

     

    It’s based on Sparrow body so it doesn’t have low altitude gliding performance as AMRAAM which has a smaller more aerodynamic body, SD-10 is more optimized for mid to high altitudes, like AMRAAM the tested range is at 10000 meters and Mach 1.2

     

    I find the SD-10 still fairly good also. When that RWR thing goes away You should be getting reasonable kill rates.

    the rwr should produce warnings when it detects emr - it should produce a tone if it's tracked using tws (e.g. square or sine-ish waveform), a tracking warning if the aircraft is continuously illuminated, a missile launch if it picks up the radar signalling to an amraam datalink etc

     

    Yes but you can’t pickup a missile fired in TWS until the last 10nm or so when the missile starts emitting it’s own pulse. But in this case the F-18 and F-16 You get a missile launch warning as soon as it has been fired even tho it’s 60nm away, but ONLY for the SD-10 so they can start defending 60miles away. I did a lot of testing and it always picked up a SD-10 launch up to 59nm away. Which is just completely wrong. But it is really really weird that this is a precise bug that only affects F-18 and F-16. No other aircraft pick it up until Pitbull which is about 10nm away. If it was RWR issue then they would pickup all missiles as soon as launched but they don’t only SD-10, if it was SD-10 bug then ALL aircraft would pickup SD-10 as soon as it has been launched but no other aircraft does. If this was the other way around ED would have had a hotfix our the next day.

  18. Yep I tested this today. ONLY F-18 and F-16 detect ONLY the SD-10 as soon as it is fired. I was detecting SD-10 missile launch fires in TWS mode at 59nm. We fired Aim-54 and other missile but they weren’t detected until 9-10nm. Really really strange bug. Cause only those 2 aircraft detect it no other aircraft does until 9-10nm away
