Yes, I've edited my post to be clearer. Caisterwoods, I'll be in touch when I'm home from work. Thanks :) Yeti42, do you fly the A10C?
-
A thousand pardons sir. However, I had already thought of that and slowed my delivery, waited for the 'bing', visually checked the recognition and then continued to pass my message. Same result. It still defaults to a different (possibly closer) airfield.

Hi all, I'm slowly but surely learning the A10C Thunderbolt II "Hawg" and would very much like to fly with others who are either slightly or significantly more experienced than I am. Or for that matter are just starting out themselves and want to rage against the machine in company  I'm based in the UK and usually fly in the evenings except on Sundays where I would hope to be flying as much as possible before the insanity of my work week strikes again. My setup and circumstances are in my signature. I have SRS, Teamspeak 3 and Discord setup (as well as VA and Vaicom) so comms shouldn't be an issue. If you're interested please either reply to the topic or private message me. Thanks :)

MFG Crosswinds Availabilty
Phil73805 replied to davebert's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
My only hesitation in buying these myself, apart from the cost and complications of assembly :) is that they are too wide to fit in the foot-well of my desk. According to the drawings they are 49cm wide which is at least 5cm too wide. Can you reduce the width? -
Hi Hollywood, I keep having the following problem and have not been able to fix it. When flying a training mission I dial in the appropriate frequency, call the airfield, VA picks up the name I've called correctly and then, defaults to another airfield. This requires me to use the F key menu which defeats the purpose of VA and Vaicom. I have clicked 'allow instant select' but that doesn't help. Any ideas?

The sale appears to be over.

Learning to use the A10C fully is an accomplishment. Clearly the rest of us mere mortals are not worthy to share the skies with you. We worship at the altar of your supremeness.

In truth I am getting good performance but I was looking to see if a simple upgrade would give it just that bit extra. Based on your perspectives it would seem that even the 1070TI would require a power unit upgrade which is a bit much for a tweak. I thought I might try and increase the longevity of my system with a straight GPU swap but I think I will run it as is for now and work on getting my setup ready for some rudder pedals...and then the TM Warthog :) Thank you all.
-
Well, the title says it all (which won't stop me from saying more). I am considering the upgrade. Why not the 1080TI? Because that would involve upgrading the power supply as well which is a step too far for me. My PC has a 500W power supply and I'm told that it could run the 1070TI with some margin. The real question is, is the performance increase worth the expense? Or should I bite the bullet, upgrade the power supply and then go for 1080TI? I use TrackIR5, not VR and I use one monitor for the sim (24") in 1920x1080 resolution, so the 1080TI might be overkill. (I also run a second monitor) I'd be grateful for your opinions.
-
Though, as a mere mortal, I'm using TrackIR5 rather than VR, I will watch this properly when I get home so I can do some fun flying when I need a break from "Eating the Elephant" (Learning the A10C). So far, what I've watched was awesome. Thanks :) Edit: for those of us with no experience of constant speed props, maybe a short word on the concept?

It seems you need to click 'Use Instant Select' on the preferences tab to have Vaicom allow you to select your radio recipient of choice rather than the closest. However, sometimes Vaicom can 'forget' that it's selected so you need to deselect the option, restart VA & Vaicom and then reselect. This is the solution that Sadist_Cain found and it works. The next problem, and it's a doozy, is how to get Vaicom to recognise the difference between Two and To which it constantly gets wrong by defaulting to To. This is particularly annoying when flying as the second of a two-ship flight and calling "Batumi, Hawg 2-1, Inbound", to which ATC responds to Hawg 1-1 and then my flight lead can't get clearance. You can obviously still land the plane but it is immersion breaking.

This is pure gold! I did wonder about TAS but didn't know enough (yet!) about the aircraft systems to find out. Thanks Ramsay!

That's excellent! Thank you msalama!

Hi Hollywood, I had a bit of a strange one yesterday that I wanted to run by you. I was flying back towards Batumi (which it now recognises) though I was near Kutaisi. I had the Batumi freq dialled up and made the inbound call. Vaicom recognised that I said Batumi but instead called Kutaisi (from which I received no reply) Any idea what's going on there?

As someone new to DCS and the A10C, I didn't know that the DCS A10C's engines were underpowered vs. reality. That explains a lot! It didn't seem right. Cruising speed of 300kts? I wish, only in a dive! How come they haven't fixed that? How hard can that be?
-
I have not yet tried this so I will. What's strange is that in training mode my inputs are frequently recognised with a good level of confidence, however, as soon as I try to transmit, all it will hear are variations on a theme of Batumi, 'but to me' etc. Why does it recognise in training mode but fail in actual use? Furthermore, when I start to add other phrases like "Hog 1-1" it almost never recognises the word Hog (I added it as an alias for Hawg) but, again, it seems to get it in training mode. This only happened in training mode working with Windows Speech Recognition training, this would not be an issue in sim. Done! Really looking forward to flying with you! :) I have done the full Windows voice training at least three times so far. It's pretty damn good with regular words but it struggles with the place names and specialist phrases that aren't a part of daily language. Voice Attack seems awesome in training mode but rather poor in actual use.
-
Okay, I tried training it as explained by the manual. Unfortunately, some of the words in the keywords list are also Windows commands or get confused with Windows commands, like 'Copy'. I said one word from the list that it heard as 'delete' which caused Vaicom and VA to crash. I restarted VA and Vaicom and tried to say Batumi (which I trained and have three other aliases for) and it failed 3/5 times. Which means that when it crashed it must have deleted the training? In training mode, it recognised my aliases with 96%+ confidence but in actual use was useless. Edit: I then deleted my aliases and tried it in training mode. It recognised it most of the time but when I switch off training mode and just tried to transmit it failed to recognise it even once. I think I'm going to put this software to one side for now. Instead of flying I'm mucking around with software (and not getting anywhere) and I need the flying time more. Maybe down the line when I'm proficient with the A10C I'll come back to it.

I've had mine for a couple of weeks and so far, it's very good for the price. Despite the promise of a more durable system (I forget the name) there is already some uncommanded input from the stick at rest. The light stays on when I let go and I need to push forward on the stick to get the light off. I'm trying to avoid adding a deadzone. There are enough buttons for all the HOTAS functions though they won't be in the same place as the Warthog and you will need one modifier key. Have a look at these (excellent) profiles created by nunupt, they will show you the potential of this controller: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/?CREATED_BY=nunupt&set_filter=Y Obviously you'll make changes to suit your own needs. I, for example, use the paddle on the throttle as rudder pedals. I use the slider on the left (usually envisioned as a radar antenna slider) as the Zoom View (all for the A10C). It's a flexible package with enough capability to get you started and keep you busy for a while to come. Furthermore, when you inevitably upgrade you will still find use for it because it's still a quality stick and throttle compared to anything else I've ever used over the years.

My Vaicom Pro manual has 52 pages, the Voice Attack Pro manual has 190ish. Which manual? Are you sure about the page? :) I will try the other suggestions when I get home.
-
Okay, I've added some aliases for Batumi using different phonetic spellings and now it's asking me to update the Voice Attack profile with instructions that do not make sense. Does it mean that I should pick a random command, delete its 'when I say' and then paste all the commands into that one? Counterintuitive to say the least. Won't that delete the command I clicked on? Edit: No it won't. I just updated as requested. Does all this help? A little. The success rate has increased from zero to 3/10.
-
I was able to get it to recognise Batumi by pronouncing it Batummy. No attempt at phonetic spelling worked. I don't know how to get it to add my pronounciation. In truth it doesn't really recognise most commands despite training. I haven't spent too much on it. I might just go back to the menu system. I often have to revert to it when the Vaicom doesn't work. You have to overpronounce words and mispronounce words to get it to recognise which is at least as immersion breaking as using a key based menu system. I also changed Hawg to Hog because...I'm British :) ...though it often hears it as 'hoc' and other variations on a theme of what I actually want.

Irishlad200000, you lost me at scripts :D It seems I will have to get used to it. I looked at the chart you linked and it seems for Knots all I need to do is double the m/s number for an approximate reading in Knots, that'll do! Thank you!
-
Thanks Hollywood_315, I will try to figure out how to do that later. mosqui, I'm not quite sure what you mean by updating the base data when adding a new key.
-
Hi there, I'm now using Vaicom with Voice Attack after a little bit of fiddling (was a little frustrating* to begin with but I pulled through) :) *British understatement For the life of me I can't get the software to understand Batumi! But you me, But I see etc etc., I've tried every possible variation of pronunciation without success. It also doesn't recognise Hawg 1-1 but it gets the gist :D When it can't understand it picks the nearest airfield which is usually Kutaisi. How can I fix this?

Hi there, is there any way to get ATC to give wind speed in Knots rather that Metres per Second? I'm slowly getting used to pressure in InHg rather than mb/hPa but the wind speed on the runway is harder for me to gauge in m/s. If not, I'll just have to learn :)
