  1. This need to be optional in that case. In VR I have a sun that blinds me already (PG theathre at least). In Il-2 the effect is way over the top (the sun is too large in VR only, due to the fisheye effect in VR), this is not something I would like to have in my gameplay in DCS.

  2. I can recommend CTS, you get most of the functions you need. Takes a bit of practice to configure and use, but when you understand it, it'll rock your world. You can switch profiles while ingame using the controller bindings.

Just an FYI that I've had greatly reduced crashes lately, and the major change that I had was that I downloaded all the optional Windows 10 updates. In particular, the 20H2 update (and associated fixes which included the KB5001330 rollback. Fingers crossed...

Have more of you tried to uninstall this KB? It's been widely reported as problematic. KB5001330

Normally you shouldn't have to do these things, but if you are doing differential diagnosis it can be a interesting test.

For security reasons you should install it again after your tests have concluded.

It can be valuable to know whether this update is part of the problem-stack.

I use CTRL-F11 to start logging after I click fly, then again immediately after the track ends.

I then open the log in Excel, remove the all the " marks with a replace command, then I delete usually the first 2 or 3 rows, which tend to show GPU framerate = 0, then at the bottom, I remove all the rows which occured between the track ending and me pressing CTRL -F11 - It's pretty obvious which ones they are as the pattern changes totally.

Then I use the "=Average" function on column D, then copy it to C and B

I get extremely consistant results this way.

I also leave my G2 hanging on it's stand before I even start WMR and do everything with desktop commands to ensure I get a consistant headset view throughout the tests.

    My sequence is:

    Switch on G2 - WMR auto-launches

Launch FPSVR from start menu - SteamVR auto-launches

    Launch DCS from start menu

Click ALT-Enter to go Fullscreen DCS

Start the track file and click CTRL-F11

Track file ends - Click CTRL-F11

Thank you very much Shaun, much appreciate the advice you've given.

Yep, I use ctrl+shft+F11 to avoid a clash with some modules , I have a standard track, and start and stop and a “similar” point in each mission, and then I remove the “ marks from the CSV, and then take an avg of each column, the half second- 1 second variance makes little practical impact on the outcome.

    Much appreciated, thank you.

I record the frametime with FPSVR with a hotkey starting and stopping at a similar point in the track (there is some variability here, but not enough to cause me concern) and then I take an average of the data produced for each column and call that "the number" .

    Dear Dr.Speed.

Are you using the fpsVR builtin 'hotkey' in the Settings, Advanced, "Frames data logging": CTRL-F11

And then you run the numbers yourself from the CSV created?

Or are you just using the Median/AVG summary from the 'History Viewer' per run?

I'm trying to find the best way to get consistent results every time.

I'm not sure if I trust the fpsVR to exclude the frames before the flight starts, before we mange to press 'fly' and start the run.

    coincidence ?

@ShaunX, may I ask the same as above, are you running the CSV output and you crunch the AVG yourself with your own spreadsheet?

When starting World 2.7 via DCS.exe the start-screen appears but over 5 minutes and more nothing happens. When I close the start-screen by taskmanager and start again in the same Windows-session World 2.7 starts as usual and works fine. In the same Win-session no problems to restart as often as wanted.

Keep in mind, the 'first time' you start up an app/game in Windows it takes longer to do so, filesystem caching and more things. DCS behaves very much in the same way.

On fast nVME systems it still takes quite long time to load for the first time of the day.

The next time you start, it will be quicker.

Perhaps as an experiment, let it run startup for even longer - perhaps your system has some other things making it tougher to start up for the first time.

Maybe you prematurely closed it before it was fully loaded in.

Oh, and add your DCS-folder to your Antivirus exclusion, otherwise AV will keep scanning those files being loaded, adding to the startup time.

In Windows 10 defender, bring up the "Virus & Threat protection" control panel, "Virus & Threat protection settings" section, manage settings. There you will find "Exclusions, add or remove".

  8. An absolutely stunning study of the effects of 'everything' affecting VR performance in DCS, in a scientific manner.

And one that has taken the time to explain how & why the effects occur. Much kudos to you sir!

I'll definitely spend a weekend going through the list and improving my own rig.

    Thank you Dr. Speed. o7

The Channel Map was never part of the KS. How do you see a connection there?

Any product would also include F-18/F-16, right? I don't think so.

    Fox

Thank you, I didn't expect anything outside of WWII to be part of this promise. But as you said, it wasn't part of the KS, which was perhaps the confusing part for me.

I believed it to include the channel map which appeared to be a smaller copy of the Normandy.

    Hence why I asked. o7

  10. Op, what do you wish to get out of the kind of query you're asking?

It's a personal preference, it depends on the situation, airframe, bodily needs, how long I've been at the office. Etc and so forth.

Right now while training I do manual, but I do autostartup quite often in MP because then I can have a short break from the screen.

  11. Qiou87, allow me to pitch in as a VR user. But don't be distracted from Flappie advisory because he's quite precise with his predictions.

In the past with my own experience of Apple & Adobe software integrations I've had some negative impact on the smoothness how my games runs. These can sometimes do background sync against Apple & Adobe cloud services, adding to the processing you need to have available for VR.

Perhaps you could try to make a new profile in the msconfig, where you do the 'hide all Microsoft services' and then go through the list and uncheck all other Adobe/apple service. After that reboot and retry and see how it runs.

Usually when I troubleshoot these things myself I do just that, allowing Microsoft services to remain while getting rid of all other 3rd parties that may add to the already tight processing-schedule you need for VR.

DCS does have some issues, the performance drop the longer you run it and how complex the maps are. It's just the nature of the complex beast this sim is. But I've been able to postpone my issues with optimizations (getting rid of bloatware), quite often I can run it for 6-8 hours before I have to do a restart of the sim. Earlier I was limited to an hour or so.

I hope these hints can provide some wisdom. Good luck.

  12. It isn't. You still have to do it manually...

Hence my question in the patch notes discussion thread (second to last post).

No official answer from ED so far.

Ah hm, nice observation. I checked mine as well.

.\Saved Games\DCS\fxo is up to date, as of the time I updated my openbeta a few days ago. No older entries.

.\Saved Games\DCS\metashaders2 does contain some older files from Dec 2019, Jan + March 2020 as well.

I'm not entirely sure I have any problems related to stutter/graphics though. I'll keep an eye on it.

  13. "As a user, I'd like to get notified in the topbar (or somewhere close to my Profile Name) when someone quotes my post or makes a mention so I can quickly jump to the post where ever who quoted/polled me."

Perhaps a tiny "(3)" icon-badge (in the case I have 3 unread mentions) which I could click on and be taken to a page which all mentions or taken to the 'last unread mention'.

I'm not concerned about getting email for it, because email management is too great as it is.

I know this may be difficult under the circumstances with the current forum-software, but I thought I make a request regardless to hear if it's possible in later versions.

    Cheers. o7

  14. First and foremost; A huge thanks for providing such excellent and nice guides. I absolutely love using them for learning a new airframe.

May I ask something for future versions (not asking for a full redesign of whats been released)?

    Background:

Due to VR and lack of physical surroundings I convert many of the pages over to the kneeboard. Since the kneeboard is a portrait-mode page I snip mostly the left part of the pages, at a roughly 4:3 ratio.

And it works great for most pages as I get the gist of what I need to remember in the procedures (for startup and like).

    Question:

Would it be possible to try to keep the text on the left-most side of the page? This is quite useful for the content such as startup, which can be considered as 'checklists' but with better information (key bindings and other hints).

It works nicely for 80% of the pages as I don't need the images in later stages.

I know I can grab checklists from other places, but I do prefer the additional hints you have in the guides.

  15. Just an additional tip. I've had similar issues on one of my rigs, where there card was removed and reset while playing some games.

I did the same usual as you have done, little effect.

The next step I took was to reseated the GPU adapter in the slot as well as cleaning it with airpressure.

First attempt made it worse. Then I reseated it (and a couple of other adapters) yet again and got rid of my problem.

In case you go down the path and still have no sensible solution you may want to try it.

  16. At DCS startup and login we're getting a:

Failed to get authorization data. Error code is:
    502
    No saved authorization found.

I checked with a couple of other users via Hoggit & ED Discord as well with 2 of my own accounts.

  17. Dear ED gurus.

Will you try to do Stensil-mesh to optimize (perhaps up to 30%) how much is rendered with the new engine?

I'm not sure whether this is a very specific method that only applies to forward rendering or other scenarios though.

I'm quite clueless on the technique, but on foil it seems like a good idea.

(The stensil mesh optimization at 57:52 minutes roughly.

    )

For the rest of us, the start is interesting on learning a bit on how VR is rendered, at 6:02:

  18. Index, 90 FPS with the Instant Action scenarios as described by Wags.

Roughly 45 on general MP servers. 30 on heavy situations in MP when DCS decides to barf resources and not recycle them properly. Happens over time, restart DCS usually resolves it.

SteamVR on 125%, PD on 1.0, MSAA 2x, and the rest is rather common best practise VR settings.
