  1. I don't think so - it doesn't simulate any specific vibration like that - it's just like the shift-j jiggle in external view but much more subtle - visually makes the craft as seen from inside the cockpit seem less like it's on rails.

  2. No, I just tested it with several other modules...shift+J pressed three times adds cockpit shake - I confirmed in a trimmed aircraft and disabled TrackIR so I could see the edge of the cockpit where it meets the canopy shuddering a bit in relation to the ground. I haven't checked to see if there's a listed binding for it in the controls menu.

  3. Well, it would appear I was mistaken. This functionality is in fact present - press shift-j 3x and there's a subtle cockpit vibration clearly visible. I still wonder if it can be made more or less prominent, but it's there.

  4. I am curious about the IRL rules/procedures for the Mi-24 autopilot. I've had my best results with all 4 channels switched off for combat and maneuvering, turn them on selectively for hover, landing, takeoff, cruise, etc., as needed, although I'm far from having it all figured out, of course. 15-20% curves on all axes, but I may reduce those (they were higher) as my skills improve.

  5. I've noticed this works in tracks, but doesn't appear to have any effect while in-game. I'm reasonably certain it has worked in other modules at various times. It's a minor thing overall, but in its own way it's a big immersion-enhancer for me, so if it's possible to implement this, that would be great. Alternatively - perhaps there's a line in a .lua file somewhere that addresses this?

  6. ...and it works. Put a BRDM-2 in the woods broadcasting an audio file at 42.4mhz FM, R-828 channel 5, tuned it, set the source selector at position 2, and heard it loud and clear. Bugs/mislabelings are on ED, not understanding the difference between AM and FM is on me. 🙂

  7. Ah, that's a very good hypothesis regarding AM and ATC. I tried it in Batumi just to rule out the possibility the Beslan frequency was wrong, but no luck. I'll try it with something other than ATC.

Also, it does seem to make sense that the R-828 would be second switch position right after the R-863, based both on the Russian labeling and the fact that it's the second-most capable radio in the aircraft, at least as I understand it.

    Thanks!

  8. Well. I'm baffled. SnuggleFairy's mission works as described, with the source selector in the second position. I've tried it several times to confirm that it's the R-828 that's picking up the signal, so at the very least there's something screwy about the hovering tooltips, the panel labeling, or the source selector switch functionality (or all 3).

Nevertheless, on my test mission, I have Beslan tower as channel 5 of the R-828 at 42.4mhz and can't get a reply on anything other than R-863 or Jadro, assuming I've programmed/tuned those.

Edited to add - I use the Russian cockpit as well, at least usually, but I've fiddled with this problem using both to account for things I may not have noticed as I am a native English speaker.

  9. I have the same problem. R-863 and Jadro work fine, but with the R-828 I get silence. I'm pretty sure I have the frequency preset done correctly in the mission editor, the source selector knob set to the correct position (which appears to be mislabeled in the tooltips), automatic tuner pressed, etc. If it's a bug or missing feature, no big deal as it's early access and remarkably complete and functional for EA, just wondering if there's something I'm overlooking.

Also, does anyone know if the real Hind R-863 is manually tunable or only has presets? There's not even a placeholder graphic representation of tuning controls, so I wonder if the R-863 set for the Mi-24 was simplified compared to that of the Mi-8, being far less of a multirole helicopter than the Hip, or if it's a work in progress.

  10. Okay, thanks very much everyone. Missile selected wasn't the specific problem, although I've made that mistake many times, but I confused jojo's suggestion of "diafr. open" with the "sight doors open" switch, yet I managed to get tone and 2 (unsuccessful) shots off with the "diafr." closed, so I must have set up the attack run better. Then I figured out my error with "diafr. open", tried that, and actually got a kill on BTR-80. So everything is working as it should. Petrovich is a better missile operator than pilot, although that he works as well as he does a week into early access is a promising sign. Thanks again!

  11. ...actually, the only problem I've encountered so far with this module. So, I'm 7km or so out from some enemy armored vehicles at a sensible altitude and speed, rear cockpit is all set to missile, sight on, everything automatic and synced, safeties off, guidance and missile control box powered up, missile on a hot rail, green ready lights, guidance unit warmed up, etc. Petrovich is flying the Hind to the target, all parameters seem to be correct, centering the reticle on the enemy vehicle and ordering Petrovich to continue the attack run, but I'm not getting the launch tone anywhere from 5.5km to 1km. From the rear seat, Petrovich works great and will hit enemy vehicles all day long, and my hypothesis I'm doing something wrong.

I believe I have everything set up correctly, I think I've eliminated any control axis conflicts, and I'm just wondering what I haven't thought of or done yet...ordering "weapons free" from the rear cockpit"? Or maybe tweaking sight slew control sensitivity...does the reticle need to be right exactly on top of the target to get launch authorization? I'm able to command a launch in the tutorial, but not in-game. Any input is appreciated, thanks!

  12. Cons: Not many...a little expensive but worth it so far, grip subjectively feels flimsy but probably isn't, needs a little more setup out of the box than some others. I suppose also limited button-mapping (but I knew that when I deliberately ordered the KG12 version, as I am currently focusing on WWII Luftwaffe aircraft, but I'll probably get an MCG eventually and that will no longer be an issue).

Pros: Basically everything else. I don't want to criticize my trusty old CH Fighterstick too much, which has served me faithfully for a decade, but this thing is in altogether another league. The degree of precise control is unreal. The impossible has become very difficult, the very difficult has become challenging, and the challenging has become routine. There's almost a reverse learning curve, so to speak, and it's still early days, but so far I'm pretty impressed. Also, the perceived flimsiness of the grip (which is probably illusory) definitely does not apply to the base and gimbal. I haven't fiddled with springs and cams yet, other than loosening the damper screw a bit. And honestly, I don't think I will for a while as the difference is so dramatic I don't need it to be tweaked much at the moment.

Used it a bit on the Bf109K-4, both Fw190s, and the Gazelle, and it was simply an entirely new flying experience. I can only imagine what it will be like once I get used to it.

The ordering/shipping process was pretty straightforward, and the packaging was sturdy.

Anyhow, at least provisionally recommended.

  13. I can confirm that these techniques work. I did a by-the-book startup, armed both gun systems on the ground and turned master arm off, took off at full throttle with manual propeller pitch set at 12:00, successfully raised the gear below 250 km/h keeping the stick steady, raised the flaps, and engaged the governor automation. I believe the generator CB popped out once, either during my takeoff and climb or after I re-engaged master arm on the way to the target, but after I pushed it back in, everything pretty much worked fine otherwise.

I have a feeling this is going to be a really great module when it is more complete and bug-free. It's already a lot of fun. The virtual cockpit and exterior model are marvelous (excessive green windscreen tint notwithstanding) and it looks like it will be a pretty deep simulation of the aircraft when developed further.

  14. Kind of an idle question, but is there or has there ever been a sound effect in the DCS Bf109K-4 module for the supposedly-audible "bang" that the slats made when they extended quickly, as several Luftwaffe pilots (who would certainly know better than I) recount? Once or twice I thought I heard something but it was probably my imagination so to to test it I unchecked "hear like in helmet", took one up, killed the engine and jettisoned the canopy and did some violent high-AoA maneuvers. They definitely popped out with alacrity but I never heard them making a sound. Anyhow, just curious - both regarding the simulation and the reality. Thanks for any information!

  15. Hi folks, I was all set to replace my aging CH Products rig (which has served me well for many years) with a Warthog HOTAS but then I've seen things here and there suggesting that the stiffness of the stick is actually a detriment for flying DCS WWII aircraft, which I'm currently focused on. Is the stiffness not outweighed by the precision, or is that precision not everything it's cracked up to be? I understand that adding extensions can improve it for warbirds and helicopters but out of the box is it more or less usable for the Spitfire, 190, etc., than the CH Fighterstick? I have looked at the VKB Gunfighter as well but that's a whole other thing. If money were no object I'd buy all of them (and VirPil too but I have other hobbies as well. :)

    Thanks for any insights!

  16. Is this a separate issue from the undercarriage controls CB bug, where the button appears pressed in but there's no sound or animation for it? Drove me crazy to do the full startup, taxi, and takeoff and then the gear won't come up. However, if you "press" it (even though there's no indication that anything has happened), the gear works fine. I've only seen this in SP, haven't tried MP in the 190 yet.

  17. So, I recently got a new system - not just for DCS, but who am I kidding, it's for DCS. Here's the basic specs: Core i7 8700k, GTX 1080 Ti, 32gb 3000mhz DDR4 RAM, M.2 SSD. It runs DCS great on my humble 1080p 60hz monitor, as long as I go easy on the post fx things like deferred shading and DOF and whatnot.

So, I think I would like to upgrade to a Gsync-equipped 144hz monitor (those are good things, right?) but I am wondering if I should stick with 1080p or go to 1440p. If, given the specs, 1440p will impose no serious penalty, then I would do that, but, at least as I approach DCS, as long as an minimum acceptable level of visual prettiness is achieved, framerate is everything, and I could live with 1080p to preserve it. 4k, multi-monitor, and VR are out of the question at the moment, so it's strictly a 1080p vs. 1440p for DCS with this specific computer kind of question.

One other consideration - does the monitor resolution have much of an impact on seeing distant targets? It seems like the obvious answer would be "yes" but as always, I'm sure there's plenty of things I haven't thought of.

    Thanks for any insights!
