tonym Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Can anyone interpret for me the message giving location of enemy i.e. UTM38T NN0111195052. Does this refer to a map reference?
effte Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Yes. The coordinates are given in MGRS, the Military Grid Reference System. UTM38T is a large grid zone (area on the planet), designated in the UTM system. NN is a smaller grid square within this zone. 01111 95052 are then the coordinates within the grid square NN. The coordinate group can be given with various numbers of figures depending on the precision you require, the first half being the easting (distance east of the grid square designator) and the second half the northing. Here's a short tutorial which I haven't read but which sounds promising. It's got a good title at least! Once you have this down, you'll be able to rattle off those cool-sounding November Zulu One Fower Niner Eight Tri Six coordinates, just like in the movies... ;) Cheers, Fred 1 ----- Introduction to UTM/MGRS - Trying to get your head around what trim is, how it works and how to use it? - DCS helos vs the real world.
tonym Posted January 26, 2011 Author Posted January 26, 2011 Thanks for clearing that up Fred. The pdf makes the whole system understandable. Do you know if the DCS map has sufficient info to use the coordinates properly? regards Tony
