Folks,

This is an A-10C Warthog single mission known as Smerch Hunt flown in the DCS: A-10C module to DCS: World. These videos fall into the AAR category with commentary provided throughout. The idea behind these is to verbalize what I do during mission planning and mission execution to give new players (or experienced players) an idea of what to do and what a full mission looks like. Sometimes just seeing someone else go through the motions of planning and flying a mission from beginning to end can make a big difference in terms of enjoying your own missions.

These videos are viewable all the way up to 1080p using the YouTube player so they should look good even when viewed full-screen.

I realize the videos are a little long and no normal human being wants to listen to me talk for hours at a time. I will provide time references to major events so you will be able to pick and choose what you want to see.

Requests for clarification of anything I go over or recommendations for additional topics are welcome.

If you found this mission helpful there is also a full 16 mission campaign flown in the A-10A available for viewing.

AWAITING ED NEW DAMAGE MODEL IMPLEMENTATION FOR WW2 BIRDS

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

Just got through watching the first part. Wow, very nice description of how they do things in real life, really enjoyed it. A lot of things makes sense in the sim now, it would be real cool if the sim had a crew chief. Makes me feel guilty that I start up in 6 minutes though. ;)

Highly recommend this vid, great job.

Watched the other two parts, very fun to see other tactics. Couple of things, did you find out why your bombs missed? Also, I don't believe 3/9 or 5 mil has any effect in CCRP mode bombing, I think that 3/9 and 5 mil are CCIP modes.

I was looking forward to the shut down procedure since the start up was first rate.

Nice job.

Wrong way round. 3/9 is a more forgiving mode that will still allow you to drop bombs in CCRP. With 5 mil you have to fly very accurately.

Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

I guess I misunderstand something. Here is a passage from the manual on page 544.

9. At about 6 seconds on the TTRN, the Solution Cue will start to fall down the ASL. Hold down the weapon release button and maneuver the aircraft so that the Solution Cue falls through the CCRP pipper. CCRP mode only uses 5 MIL mode; MAN REL and 3/9 are not options.

So, I understand that 5 mil is the default mode in CCRP and you have to select 3/9 or 5 mil in CCIP mode, and MAN REL is the default in CCIP.

If you use GBU's then they will use 3/9 automatically. In CCIP-CR you can use 3/9 or 5 mil for the CCRP part.

Thanks Zeke. I will probably record another one this afternoon and will be sure to go through the full landing and shutdown. Granted, everything that happens between crew chief disconnect and crew chief re-connect is just an educated guess on my part but I figure I am in the right ballpark. ;)

It took a while for what you were saying to sink in but you are absolutely right. The CCIP Release Option selected through the IFFCC menu only applies to CCIP. You will still be in either 5 mil or 3/9 mode for a CCRP release but the mode depends strictly on the weapon that is selected. The IFFCC setting does not matter in that case. That is awesome because it gives me one less thing I have to think about when setting up for attacks.

After watching everything again, the Mk-82 hit just outside the pod's field of view and, according to the debrief, actually killed the guys on the ground. That explains why I couldn't get my wingman to attack them... I have no clue what happened to the GBU-12 but suspect it had something to do with turning the IFFCC off and then back on earlier in the mission. I actually don't mind missing with those every now and then since a "no-guide" is a fairly common occurrence.
