Berndt Mangler Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 I’ve entertained this question else ware, but thought I’d ask it here also. So, I was just cruising along and I was defining the brevity code “BANDIT”, this brings up a question. I expect a stupid answers to a smart question so please try to refrain. (Actually the hummer could be fun, so go for it..) I already know that if its shooting at me it’s now my enemy at this current moment, Friend or Foe. (I’d hope I had the skill to evade then do the assessment before I blacked his eye). SOOOoooo… There is a Procedure that we race through to elevate a Bogey to Bandit, before he elevates us preferably. That hesitation is a function of "The fog of war". There is an SOP that is done very quickly to designate a BANDIT. I realize it don’t mean I can prosecute it, only that this group or aircraft has passed all “criteria” to be a BANDIT. I’m sure this procedure/”criteria” has come in to question in many a debriefings. This is a massive accusation flung by a lowly wingman. We as leaders must trust he/she has done the quick steps to state their claim. This has to be a strict measure as we don’t want witch hunters up here. Again Soooo… what is “IAW Theater Identification Criteria”. In this conflict does all enemy where red, and all friendly ware blue jerseys???...heheehe. I could just see myself going Blind then Joining an enemy GROUP..hahahah I’m sorry if this is a stupid question but I really don’t think so, What "criteria" makes a BOGEY a BANDIT? Please, serious answers as best you can, or pointers to documents, or threads, or even keywords to search on, or even a u-tube, I’ll figure it out and write one up. <this was copied and spell checked from an earlier post else ware, it may look similar. I’ll update both with Smart reply's…perhaps even the jokes> [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] MoBo: SaberTooth P67 B3 CPU: i7 2600K OC'd 4.434 Cooling: H100, Nine Asorted Fans GPU: EVGA Drvr344.75 GTX 780 and 580 w/physX MEM: Patriot Viper Xtrm 16GB Power: Antec HGC-900 HRD: Samsung SSD 256GB, WD 2TB wPageFile OS: Win7pro 64b Display: AcerHN274H-nVidia3D 27", Qty2 BenQ GW2750HM 27", Asus VS208 24", Qty2 Lilliput U80/c Input: G13, G110, G700s, TM WortHog, Saitek Cmbt Rudder, TM MFCDs, TrackIR5 Sound: Z906, G930w/IR5/Pwr. Berndt Mangler Posted February 24, 2014 Author Posted February 24, 2014 Disregard this for me till another time. Worth bringing up again, but not just yet for me, this is getting ahead of my self if this is worth continuing I'll follow it. for those that don't know, I've read where the IFF is not modeled in DCS, it be nice to rule out the unknown aircraft as friendly, this discussion should be about how to ID a contact visually or using AWACS. My self and another's are working on our communications in flight. I'll entertain you with my brevity code questions in a separate topic. studding one just brought to life another. GRUNT -Shrek- Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 source: the internet aka wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiservice_tactical_brevity_code Bogey A radar or visual air contact whose identity is unknown. Bandit An aircraft identified as enemy, in accordance with theater ID criteria. The term does not necessarily imply direction or authority to engage. There are several criterias to be met, in relation to location, time frame, ROE, alarm status. Most easy: NFZ. No fly zones. Aircraft in there will be regarded as hostile, depending on the situation as misorientated. There are several means of identification: Transponder/IFF. Radio contact. Flight path in relation to no fly zones, pre-ordered paths. Matching own air movements against radar contact. Visual reconnaissance, and many more. In relation to bogey/bandit. Any FAC/spotter in the field can contact TACNET and report green/unknown or red/hostile or blue/friend. Stinger/Redeye comes with IFF (ex. some export versions) Several radio procedures are in effect to be hopefully failsave in combination with other means. In DCS? Have an AWACS, call it. Have an GFC and hes checking the airspace. Or all members of one coaltion are in Teamspeak (or similar radio system) and talk about their flight path - training in orientation and coms. Or one Wing is lead by one leader who has overview.
Berndt Mangler Posted February 25, 2014 Author Posted February 25, 2014 Dude thank you for that, you can tell it’s over my skill level at this point and I'll be back at this again shortly. Someone else will like knowing this I'm sure. I hope to be in a Squadron one day and I suspect I'll learn more there and as I fly more on line. Basically, I read it that there are many factors that are trained for at unit level. I see my ignorance comes from flying missions I've downloaded that don't have this briefed, it’s assumed I guess. I'll look back at some of the mission briefings I've read, for Air Corridors. Now everyone will think I'm gona shoot em down if not on my course...hahahah. Not to worry, me and my A10 try to avoid aircraft other than my own GROUP, but just keep an eye on me for a bit.. Bushmanni Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 I think "IAW Theater Identification Criteria" is deliberately ambiguous phrase to signify that the criteria is situation dependent. Depending on what kind of hardware is available, who your enemy is and what is going on in the battle space there are different ways telling friend, civilians and enemies apart. For example if it's certain that there's no civilian or neutral planes around and you can verify the bogey is not friendly it can't be anything else than a bandit.
