jeffmaysefaith79 Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Does anyone have an opinion about how much better DCS runs with an I7 chip than an I5? I am thinking about an upgrade including processor and SSD, and any input/experience would be helpful. I am thinking about an upgrade including processor and SSD, and any input/experience would be helpful. The most significant difference in general between the i7 and i5 is the increased number of threads. A factor which is of 0 benefit to DCS. Now if it happens to have a faster clock speed, there might be some improvement, but probably not by much, and money could be saved by just getting a faster clocked i5 instead. http://104thphoenix.com/
jeffmaysefaith79 Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 Right now I am running an I5 2500k @ 3.3g, 6970 video card with three monitors. I seem to have a problem somewhere in the system. It doesn't matter if I have the graphics settings all the way up or all the way down, I am only getting about 7 FPS on a mission with any complexity at all. It runs ok on free flight missions and stuff but seems to have problems processing all the other units in a battle scenario. Any advice would be helpful as I have been dealing with this since I built this system over a year ago. cichlidfan Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Right now I am running an I5 2500k @ 3.3g, 6970 video card with three monitors. How much memory is on the 6970 and what is the resolution of your monitors? Even at stock speeds, that 2500k should perform better than that. Have you ever tested it with only one monitor? july865 Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 forget the chip. get a good SSD and a GREAT video card Asus x99, i7 5930k, 32g mem, MSI 1070GTX, 970 Samsung M.2, LG 35in Ultra-Wide, TrackIR 4 Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
jeffmaysefaith79 Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 2G on the 6970. I have. right now its at 5760x1080. It helps a bit on one monitor but I doesn't really fix the problem. I have heard of ppl getting 30-50 fps on three monitors with a comparable system. blkspade Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 To some extent you can just blame the DCS engine. Certain times it just turns to crap, and no amount of hardware prevents that from happening. It doesn't matter if you're on AMD or Intel, or Nvidia for graphics. That said overclocking your CPU might help some as will a GPU upgrade. Even still the end result will leave you in the teens to mid 20s at best. This is the crap I hope DX11 will resolve, provided its used outside of just the Edge enabled maps. http://104thphoenix.com/
jeffmaysefaith79 Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 forget the chip. get a good SSD and a GREAT video card I guess I thought the 6970 was a great video card...lol but when I built the system I knew virtually nothing about gaming computers. jeffmaysefaith79 Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 What would you recommend for a graphics upgrade? I kinda like my three monitor setup so I want that capability. It did help some when I overclocked the processor. Its only stable on turbo tho, gets a little funky turned al the way up. cichlidfan Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 3GB minimum VRAM on the graphics card should help with that. Getting an Nvidia card instead of AMD will also help (at least until EDGE comes out, which may or may not change things). I use one with a single high resolution screen and it is kinda pushing it at that point. I had some improvement with the 7970 before it died, but still had those low points with less than desirable performance. As for overclocking it gets better if you use an aftermarket cpu cooler. http://104thphoenix.com/

The only thing that has kept me personally from getting an Nvidia card is the fact I do stuff other than DCS where the AMD cards are way better. That they do nothing to resolve the engine related frame drops that happen for no explicable reason. The prices are generally better, current price gouging aside. http://104thphoenix.com/

All true enough, but currently Nvidia gives better performance in DCS. jeffmaysefaith79 Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 I thank all of you for the advice. What is confusing me is that there is virtually no difference in FPS between all settings on low and all settings on high. Maybe 2FPS difference.
